Quantum dot-protein interface: Interaction of the CdS quantum dot with human hemoglobin for the study of the energy transfer process and binding mechanism along with detection of the unfolding of hemoglobin.

In this study, the interaction of the human hemoglobin with cost effective and chemically fabricated CdS quantum dots (QDs) (average sizes ≈3nm) has been investigated. The semiconductor QDs showed maximum visible absorption at 445 nm with excitonic formation and band gap of ≈ 2.88 eV along with hexagonal crystalline phase. The binding of QDs-Hb occurs through corona formation to the ground sate complex formation. The life time of the heme pocket binding and reorganization were found to be t1 = 43 min and t2 = 642 min, respectively. The emission quenching of the Hb has been indicated large ener

Evaluation of apigenin-based biflavonoid derivatives as potential therapeutic agents against viral protease (3CLpro) of SARS-CoV-2 via molecular docking, molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics studies.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of the pandemic COVID-19 disease that affects human respiratory function. Despite the scientific progression made in the development of the vaccine, there is an urgent need for the discovery of antiviral drugs for better performance at different stages of SARS-CoV-2 reproduction. The main protease (Mpro or 3CLpro) plays a pivotal role in the life cycle of the virus, making it an attractive target for the development of antiviral agents effective against the new strains of coronaviruses (CoVs). In this study, a

Design and simulation of perturbed onion-like quantum-dot-quantum-well (CdSe/ZnS/CdSe/ZnS) and its influence on fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism.

In this study, the authors investigate one of the biological sensory applications (fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)) that has astonishing influence on implementation of the bio-medical assays. For the first time, in this study, the new inorganic modified nanoparticle structure (quantum-dot quantum-well (QDQW) heteronanocrystal) is used as donor particle. By considering the mentioned structure, the authors can easily manipulate the donor emission spectrum and all parameters of FRET, such as overlapping between the donor emission and acceptor absorption. In this procedure, the Först

Mechanism of Multiple Emission in Gold Quantum Boxes and Design Rules for Strong Near-Infrared Luminescence.

Ligand-protected gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) hold great promise for near-infrared photonics and bioimaging, but their low photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and unclear emission mechanisms have limited the rational design of highly luminescent NCs. Here, we report a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the representative Au8n+4(SR)4n+8 quantum-box series (n = 3, 4, 5, 6) using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations to elucidate the structure-photophysics relationship. We reveal that high structural symmetry and small aspect ratios (AR) severely

Tuning mechanism and machine learning prediction of second harmonic generation in modified Tietz quantum wells.

We develop a symmetry-tunable framework for second-harmonic generation (SHG) in modified Tietz quantum wells and a fast, accurate surrogate to predict SHG under external fields. Within an effective-mass/envelope model, we quantify how structural parameters and static fields reshape level intervals and intersubband dipole couplings, thereby controlling SHG amplitude and lineshape. A magnetic field compresses the envelope and tends to equalize subband spacings, damping asymmetry-driven SHG at high fields, whereas an electric field tilts the well, breaks inversion symmetry, and can realign resona

Intermaterial Hybridization as a Mechanism for Tunable Second-Harmonic Generation in Quantum Dot-Monolayer MoS2 Systems.

Coherent hybridization between distinct material systems can fundamentally reshape the optical response, yet its quantitative influence on nonlinear susceptibility has remained largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that coherent coupling between CdSe-based quantum dots and monolayer MoS2 governs second-harmonic generation (SHG), giving rise to both a pronounced non-monotonic distance dependence and orders of magnitude enhancement in SHG intensity. By systematically tuning the interfacial separation, we uncovered a robust non-monotonic evolution of the SHG. This behavior cannot be explained

Parity-Anomaly Quantum Anomalous Hall State in Mechanically Assembled Topological Insulator/Magnet Heterostructures.

The family of quantized anomalous Hall effects provides remarkable electronic properties-for example, current flow perpendicular to the voltage and, in some cases, dissipationless edge states even with zero applied magnetic field, B-but their development is limited by their realization only at very low temperatures. The state of the art in magnetically-doped topological insulators (TIs) currently allows quantized Hall conductivities to persist up to temperatures of several Kelvin. An alternative approach, proximity-coupled TI/magnet heterostructures made using a chemically separate magnet, has

The mechanism of intramolecular halogen bonding enhanced the quantum efficiency of ultralong organic phosphorescence in the aggregated state.

Ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) has broad application prospects in many fields, but realizing its high quantum efficiency is still full of challenges. One of the main reasons is that the internal luminescence mechanism is unclear and theoretical investigations to reveal the inner structure-property relationship are highly desired. Herein, the internal mechanism of halogen bonding enhancing the quantum efficiency of UOP is studied through the combination of quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics methods coupled with the thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) method. Can Mesoporous Silica Speed Up Degradation of Benzodiazepines? Hints from Quantum Mechanical Investigations.

This work reports for the first time a quantum mechanical study of the interactions of a model benzodiazepine drug, i.e., nitrazepam, with various models of amorphous silica surfaces, differing in structural and interface properties. The interest in these systems is related to the use of mesoporous silica as carrier in drug delivery. The adopted computational procedure has been chosen to investigate whether silica-drug interactions favor the drug degradation mechanism or not, hindering the beneficial pharmaceutical effect. Computed structural, energetics, and vibrational properties represent a

A novel insight into mechanism of derangement of coagulation balance: interactions of quantum dots with coagulation-related proteins.

BACKGROUND: Quantum dots (QDs) have gained increased attention for their extensive biomedical and electronic products applications. Due to the high priority of QDs in contacting the circulatory system, understanding the hemocompatibility of QDs is one of the most important aspects for their biosafety evaluation. Thus far, the effect of QDs on coagulation balance haven't been fully understood, and limited studies also have yet elucidated the potential mechanism from the perspective of interaction of QDs with coagulation-related proteins. RESULTS: QDs induced the derangement of coagulation bala

A Quantum Chemical Investigation into the Molecular Mechanism of the Atmospheric Reactions of Chemi-Ions with Nitrogen and Nitrogen Oxides.

Nitrogen oxides and chemi-ions are atmospheric pollutants with considerable aeronomic interest. These toxicants can react with each other, producing various ionic species and highly reactive by-products that play a crucial role in aerosol clustering and mediate several important atmospheric reactions. Understanding the chemical reactivity of these pollutants can provide essential information for controlling their excess emission into the atmosphere. Computational modeling and electronic structure studies help in predicting the structure, reactivity, and thermodynamics of transient atmospheric

Polymer-capped CdSe/ZnS quantum dots for the sensitive detection of Cu2+ and Hg2+ and the quenching mechanism.

In this work, poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride)-capped CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) aminolyzed with ethanolamine are proposed as fluorescent probes for the detection of Cu2+ and Hg2+, and two different quenching mechanisms are discussed in detail. The coordination abilities of the surface polymer of CdSe/ZnS QDs and two metal ions are calculated by density functional theory (DFT). The photoinduced electron transfer from excited QDs to Cu2+ unoccupied orbitals is enhanced due to the coordination between Cu2+ and the surface polymer of QDs. The electron transfer consumes non-radiative energy and

Graphene oxide sheets and quantum dots inhibit α-synuclein amyloid formation by different mechanisms.

Aggregation and amyloid formation of the 140-residue presynaptic and intrinsically disordered protein α-synuclein (α-syn) is a pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). Understanding how α-syn forms amyloid fibrils, and investigations of agents that can prevent their formation is therefore important. We demonstrate herein that two types of graphene oxide nanoparticles (sheets and quantum dots) inhibit α-syn amyloid formation by different mechanisms mediated via differential interactions with both monomers and fibrils. We have used thioflavin-T fluorescence assays and kinetic analysis,

Tin dioxide (SnO2) and graphene are versatile materials that are vitally important for creating new functional and smart materials. A facile, simple and efficient ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal synthesis approach has been developed to prepare graphene-SnO2 nanocomposites (GSNCs), including three samples with graphene/Sn weight ratios = 1 : 2 (GSNC-2), 1 : 1 (GSNC-1), and graphene oxide/Sn weight ratio = 1 : 1 (GOSNC-1). Low-magnification electron microscopy analysis indicated that graphene was exfoliated and adorned with SnO2 nanoparticles, which were dispersed uniformly on both the sides of

Transition states for the dimerization of 1,3-cyclohexadiene: a DFT, CASPT2, and CBS-QB3 quantum mechanical investigation.

Quantum mechanical calculations using restricted and unrestricted B3LYP density functional theory, CASPT2, and CBS-QB3 methods for the dimerization of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (1) reveal several highly competitive concerted and stepwise reaction pathways leading to [4 + 2] and [2 + 2] cycloadducts, as well as a novel [6 + 4] ene product. The transition state for endo-[4 + 2] cycloaddition (endo-2TS, DeltaH(double dagger)(B3LYP(0K)) = 28.7 kcal/mol and DeltaH(double dagger)(CBS-QB3(0K)) = 19.0 kcal/mol) is not bis-pericyclic, leading to nondegenerate primary and secondary orbital interactions. The mechanism of the Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement: quantum chemistry and TST study supported by experimental kinetic data.

The mechanism of the Baeyer-Villiger rearrangement is modelled for the reaction of propanone with trifluoroperacetic acid, catalyzed by trifluoroacetic acid in dichloromethane, using three DFT methods (B3LYP, BH&HLYP and MPWB1K) and MP2. These results are refined and used to calculate the overall reaction rate coefficient using conventional Transition State Theory. The excellent agreement between the calculated (1.00 x 10(-3) L mol(-1) s(-1)) and the experimental (1.8 x 10(-3) L mol(-1) s(-1)) rate coefficients at the MPWB1K level strongly supports the mechanism recently proposed by our group.

Unraveling the Proton-Induced Degradation Mechanism in Quantum-Dots Light-Emitting Diode for Space Applications.

Semiconductor materials capable of operating in extreme space environments are increasingly important. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are widely utilized in optoelectronic applications, but their radiation stability at the device level remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the origin of proton-induced degradation in CdSe/ZnS quantum dots light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with fluences from 1013 to 1015 p/cm2. While negligible degradation or slight improvement in diode behavior are observed at low fluence, severe deterioration occurs above 1014 p/cm2, leading to complete luminance loss at
