Evaluation of Serum Leucine-Rich Alpha-2 Glycoprotein Levels in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients across Racial Groups.

INTRODUCTION: Serum leucine-rich alpha-2 glycoprotein (LRG) has emerged as a novel biomarker for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, its clinical utility among non-Japanese populations has not been investigated. This study aimed to validate the diagnostic ability of serum LRG in non-Japanese patients with IBD. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted, including patients with IBD who underwent at least one serum LRG measurement between 2020 and 2023. Correlations between serum LRG and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were independently evaluated in Japanese and non-Ja

Examining the geographical distribution of air pollution disparities across different racial and ethnic groups: Incorporating workplace addresses.

BACKGROUND: Most previous studies on air pollution exposure disparities among racial and ethnic groups in the US have been limited to residence-based exposure and have given little consideration to population mobility and spatial patterns of residences, workplaces, and air pollution. This study aimed to examine air pollution exposure disparities by racial and ethnic groups while explicitly accounting for both the work-related activity of the population and localized spatial patterns of residential segregation, clustering of workplaces, and variability of air pollutant concentration. METHOD: I

Rates of Cardiovascular Disease and CKD Progression in Young Adults with CKD across Racial and Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: Significant racial and ethnic disparities in cardiovascular (CV) and kidney function outcomes in older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been reported. However, little is known about the extent to which these disparities exist in patients with CKD during the foundational period of young adulthood. The objective of this study was to determine risk factors and rates of CV disease and CKD progression in young adults with CKD across racial and ethnic groups. METHODS: We studied all participants aged 21-40 years of age enrolled in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRI

Prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms in adolescents: is there a difference in different racial and ethnic groups?

The study aims to determine if differences exist among racial/ethnic groups in the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms in adolescents. A cross-sectional questionnaire was administered to a sample of students in four racially and ethnically diverse high schools in suburban Chicago. A total of 2561 questionnaires were analyzed: 33% Hispanics, 30% Caucasians, 22% African Americans, 15% Asians, 54% female, mean age 15.8 (±1.3) years. Thirty-two percent had at least one esophageal and/or respiratory symptom ≥once a week. Caucasians and African Americans had more dysphagia than Hispanics

Inflammatory bowel disease in African American children compared with other racial/ethnic groups in a multicenter registry.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Few epidemiologic investigations characterize inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in non-Caucasian children. Our study compared IBD characteristics between African Americans and non-African Americans enrolled in a multicenter pediatric IBD registry with endoscopic- and pathology-based diagnosis. METHODS: The study retrieved data entered from January 2000 to October 2003 on children 1 to 17 years old, inclusive, followed by a consortium of academic and community US pediatric gastroenterology practices. Analyses examined racial/ethnic differences by comparing the proportions of

Maternal obesity and diabetes as risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes: differences among 4 racial/ethnic groups.

OBJECTIVES: We examined associations between obesity, diabetes, and 3 adverse pregnancy outcomes--primary cesarean delivery, preterm birth, and low birth-weight (LBW)--by racial/ethnic group. Our goal was to better understand how these associations differentially impact birth outcomes by group in order to develop more focused interventions. METHODS: Data were collected from the 1999, 2000, and 2001 New York City birth files for 329,988 singleton births containing information on prepregnancy weight and prenatal weight gain. Separate logistic regressions for 4 racial/ethnic groups predicted the

Metabolic bone disease in the elderly. Biochemical studies in three different racial groups living in South Africa.

In an attempt to detect biochemical evidence of metabolic bone disease in the aged, we measured plasma parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations, in addition to plasma calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase and creatinine levels, in elderly White, Black and Indian women. All three ethnic groups demonstrated raised mean PTH concentrations. The Black patients, however, showed the greatest mean PTH elevation and the lowest plasma calcium level. Increased PTH secretion in elderly females may reflect either an age-related decline in renal function or subclinical osteomalacia. Elderly Black women

Exploring motivational interviewing's technical hypothesis with emerging adults from racial or ethnic minority groups with heavy alcohol use.

Emerging adults from minority racial and ethnic backgrounds are rarely represented in alcohol intervention research, limiting our understanding of how these interventions function across different subgroups. This study examines whether in-session distal (i.e., decision-making that is directly about behavioral change) and proximal change talk (i.e., decisions about indirect coping activities or lifestyle changes that may facilitate behavioral change) mediate motivation to change alcohol use and strategies to limit drinking after a Brief Motivational Interview session. We also explore if racial

Prospective associations between treatment for drug-use and sexually transmitted infections across racial and ethnic groups of women.

BackgroundAlthough treatment for drug-use reduces HIV/HCV risk, little is known about its relationship with other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among women who use drugs. We examined the prospective association between receipt of treatment for drug use and incident STIs, and whether associations differ across racial and ethnic groups among women who use drugs.MethodsWe conducted a secondary analysis of a 2010 longitudinal cohort among women participants who reported drug use at baseline (n = 826). Participants completed surveys and STI testing at baseline and 6 months. The primary exp

Identifying lifestyle risk factors that discriminate memory trajectories: Differential findings across racial and ethnic groups in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Differences in lifestyle factors contribute towards inequalities in dementia incidence and memory trajectories across racial and ethnic groups. We identifieded lifestyle risk factors that best discriminat memory trajectories in older adults without cognitive impairment. METHOD: The study included 523 older adults from the University of California, Davis-Alzheimer's disease Research Center and 1097 from the Kaiser Healthy-Aging and Diverse Life-Experiences Study. Age, sex, and 13 lifestyle risk factors were used to discriminate latent class memory trajectories in African American

Disparities in Surgical Intervention and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Racial/Ethnic Groups With Degenerative Lumbar Spondylolisthesis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Racial and socioeconomic disparities in spine surgery for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis persist in the United States, potentially contributing to unequal health-related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes. This is important as lumbar spondylolisthesis is one of the most common causes of surgical low back pain, and low back pain is the largest disabler of individuals worldwide. Our objective was to assess the relationship between race, socioeconomic factors, treatment utilization, and outcomes in patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis. METHODS: This cohort study

Are There Differences in Postoperative Opioid Prescribing Across Racial and Ethnic Groups? Assessment of an Academic Health System.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated racial disparities in opioid prescribing in emergency departments and after surgical procedures. Orthopaedic surgeons account for a large proportion of dispensed opioid prescriptions, yet there are few data investigating whether racial or ethnic disparities exist in opioid dispensing after orthopaedic procedures. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Are Black, Hispanic or Latino, or Asian or Pacific Islander (PI) patients less likely than non-Hispanic White patients to receive an opioid prescription after an orthopaedic procedure in an academic United States

Moving from rhetoric to reality: adapting Housing First for homeless individuals with mental illness from ethno-racial groups.

BACKGROUND: The literature on interventions addressing the intersection of homelessness, mental illness and race is scant. The At Home/Chez Soi research demonstration project is a pragmatic field trial investigating a Housing First intervention for homeless individuals with mental illness in five cities across Canada. A unique focus at the Toronto site has been the development and implementation of a Housing First Ethno-Racial Intensive Case Management (HF ER-ICM) arm of the trial serving 100 homeless individuals with mental illness from ethno-racial groups. The HF ER-ICM program combines the

National estimates of the burden of inflammatory bowel disease among racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is poorly characterized in minorities in the U.S. We sought to enumerate the burden of IBD among racial and ethnic groups using national-level data. METHODS: Data from the National Health Interview Survey was used to calculate prevalence and incidence of IBD among adults (≥ 18 years) in 1999. The Nationwide Inpatient Sample was queried to ascertain rates of IBD-related hospitalizations and the Underlying Cause of Death Database was accessed to quantify IBD-related mortality. RESULTS: An estimated 1,810,773 adult Americans were
