We studied reciprocal inhibition of H-reflexes in the forearm flexor and extensor muscles in 14 patients with spastic hemiplegia secondary to a focal cerebral lesion and 14 normal volunteers. In the spastic limb, the Hmax/Mmax ratio was increased in both flexor and particularly extensor wrist muscles. The 3 normal inhibitory phases of reciprocal inhibition between extensor and flexor forearm muscles were markedly reduced on the spastic side of patients. The early disynaptic phase showed the greatest alteration. Reduced or absent inhibition between forearm muscles associated with increased spin

A predominance and/or an atrophy of type I fibers and a loss of deep tendon reflexes are often observed in different types of congenital myopathy. Various data indicate that both findings can be linked: dysfunction of the myotatic reflex can induce predominant involvement of type I fibers. In order to specify the mechanism of the loss of tendon reflex, an investigation of the Hoffmann reflex (H reflex) was performed in one case of centronuclear myopathy and in one case of congenital type fiber disproportion with type I hypertrophy. The Achilles tendon reflex was absent but the H reflex showed

Activation of muscarinic cholinergic receptors located at the terminal adrenergic nerve fiber inhibits the process of exocytotic norepinephrine (NE) release. This neuromodulatory effect of acetylcholine and related compounds has been discovered as a pharmacological phenomenon. Subsequently, evidence for a physiological role of the presynaptic muscarinic inhibition was obtained on organs known to be innervated by the autonomic ground plexus (Hillarp, Acta. Physiol. Scand. 46, Suppl. 157: 1-68, 1959) in which terminal adrenergic and cholinergic axons run side by side. Thus, in the heart electric

Pathological changes on the stereocilia of cochlear hair cells observed by Bredberg et al. (1972) after noise exposure and in the early stages of antibiotic intoxication are suggested to cause a mechanical decoupling between the tectorial membrane and the hair cells. During acute episodes of endolymphatic hydrops a similar decoupling is suggested to occur, although for different reasons. Harris (1968) calculated the noise generated at the input to the hair cells on account of the Brownian motion of air particles in front of the tympanic membrane. For tight coupling, he obtained a level of (--)

The aim of this study was to determine whether there are sex differences in motor unit firing behavior in patients with Parkinson's disease. Twenty-seven patients with Parkinson's disease (females = 14 [age = 71.1 ± 6.8], males = 13 [age = 69.2 ± 10.3], Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III score; females = 10.8 ± 4.8, males = 11.4 ± 1.4) performed a contraction at 30% of the maximal voluntary contraction. For each participant, motor unit spike trains were decomposed from high-density surface electromyography data recorded from bilateral vastus lateralis muscles via blind source se

This study aimed to determine the difference in motor unit (MU) firing pattern between hypertensive and normotensive individuals, and the relationship between MU firing pattern and post-exercise blood pressure (BP) response in older individuals. Fourteen older untreated (systolic/diastolic BP (SBP/DBP) ≥ 130/80 mmHg, 76 (5) years), 11 treated hypertensive (78 (4) years) and 14 normotensive (SBP/DBP < 130/80 mmHg, 71 (4) years) individuals were studied. Participants performed ramp-up exercises until 50% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of knee extension and five MVCs. During the ramp-up e

Thoughts arise spontaneously in our minds with remarkable frequency, but tracking the brain systems associated with the early inception of a thought has proved challenging. Here we addressed this issue by taking advantage of the heightened introspective ability of experienced mindfulness practitioners to observe the onset of their spontaneously arising thoughts. We found subtle differences in timing among the many regions typically recruited by spontaneous thought. In some of these regions, fMRI signal peaked prior to the spontaneous arising of a thought - most notably in the medial temporal l

Neuromotor control of skeletal muscles, including respiratory muscles, is ultimately dependent on the structure and function of the motor units (motoneurons and the muscle fibers they innervate) comprising the muscle. In most muscles, considerable diversity of contractile and fatigue properties exists across motor units, allowing a range of motor behaviors. In diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there may be disproportional primary (disease related) or secondary effects (related to treatment or other concomitant factors) on the size and contractility of specific musc

BACKGROUND: Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a therapeutic intervention using constraint of the less-affected limb and intensive use of the hemiplegic extremity in individuals with hemiplegia. The purpose of this study was to determine whether children with cerebral palsy (CP) who have undergone a 2-week function-based CIMT show improved hand function and underlying muscle activation changes associated with functional gains.
METHODS: Six children with hemiplegic CP participated in the study, receiving 4 hours of therapy 5 days a week coupled with bi-valve casts worn 8-12 hours fo

Sciatic neuropathy is a rare mononeuropathy of the lower limbs that is commonly misdiagnosed as spinal stenosis or herniated nucleus pulposus. We describe an unusual case in which a patient underwent surgical excision of a large soft-tissue mass on his right side that involved the posterior and medial compartment of the thigh with displacement of the sciatic nerve posteriorly. The patient had full resolution of his pain and restoration of his neurologic function.

A midline loudness balance test was made in 10 normal ears with blocked ear canals and in 104 conductively deaf ears with loss not exceeding 45 dB. The test was made by giving the tones simultaneously in the ears at 10, 60 and 80 dB sensation levels for 500 and 2 000 Hz. In the normal group the midline balance method indicated no reduction from the threshold differences at any of the three levels whereas significant reductions occurred in all groups of conduction deafness. The occurrence of true partial recruitment in conduction deafness demonstrated by ABLB (Fowler's) test was attributed to a

1 We have studied the unit activity of 88 pulmonary stretch receptors (RPI) in the vagus nerve of the cat by using the single fibre technique. 2 In spite of a 38% decrease in tidal volume, the discharge frequency of RPI is statistically unchanged during polypnea, However, RPI are recruited earlier, but their discharge overlaps expiration. 3 Individual influences of tidal volume, temperature, and FACO2 on RPI activities are tested. During polypnea, the excitatory influences of hyperthermia and hypocapnia act against the depressing action of tidal volume reduction: RPI are still active. 4 During

Transcutaneous spinal stimulation aims to target dorsal spinal roots, which deliver sensory information to the spinal cord. However, the stimulation waveform that most effectively recruits sensory fibers at the lowest intensity has not been identified. The purpose of this study was to compare conventional and high-frequency burst-modulated stimulation waveforms in their ability to recruit sensory fibers, as assessed by H-reflex threshold, recruitment characteristics, and motor fiber activation. In participants with intact neurological function (n = 12), soleus H-reflex recruitment curves were

OBJECTIVE: To compare intra-epidermal (IES) and transcutaneous (TES) electrical stimulation with regard to nociceptive Aδ-fiber activation and Aβ-fiber co-activation. Cutaneous silent periods (CSPs) were assessed as a proxy for Aδ-fiber activation, and cortical vertex potentials (VPs) in the absence of somatosensory evoked cortical potentials (SSEPs) were assessed to exclude Aβ-fiber activation.
METHODS: IES and TES were applied at increasing intensities (multiples of electrical detection threshold, EDT). In Experiment 1, psychophysical assessments, i.e., pain intensity and quality, and CSPs

BACKGROUND: This proof-of-concept case-control study examined the feasibility of tongue high-density surface electromyography (HDS-EMG) to detect hypoglossal neuropathy.
METHODS: We analyzed tongue HDS-EMG for N = 2 participants. Subjects were graded through clinical tongue functional measures and gold-standard needle EMG. We collected HDS-EMG in three tongue tasks: relaxation, protrusion, and isometric maximum effort. The HDS-EMG was decomposed into motor unit spike train estimates.
RESULTS: Muscle relaxation HDS-EMG contained spikes consistent with fasciculation potential morphology. Durin

We sought to examine the effect of varying chemoreflex stress on sympathetic neural recruitment strategies during end-expiratory apnea. We hypothesized that increases in the firing frequency and probability of low-threshold axons at the asphyxic "break point" would be exaggerated during hypoxia and attenuated during hyperoxia. Multiunit muscle sympathetic nervous system activity (MSNA) (peroneal nerve microneurography) was measured in 10 healthy male subjects (31 ± 2 yr, 25 ± 1 kg/m2). Individuals completed maximal voluntary end-expiratory apnea under normoxic, hypoxic (inspired O2 fraction: 0

The aim of this study was to compare the recruitment patterns and latencies of the scapular muscles, as well as the isokinetic performance of the shoulder rotators in 10 subjects with unilateral impingement syndrome who comprised the impingement group (IG) with a control group (CG) of 10 asymptomatic subjects. The recruitment patterns and latencies were evaluated by electromyographic activity during arm elevation in the scapular plane. Isokinetic work ratios of the shoulder rotator muscles were used to analyze muscular performance. A 2 x 2 ANOVA detected that muscular performance and recruitme

The Cinderella hypothesis postulates the continuous activity of specific motor units (MUs) during low-level muscle contraction. The MUs may become metabolically overloaded, with the subject developing muscle pain and strain. The hypothesis requires MUs that are active for a time long enough to actually damage muscle fibers. The aim of this study was to determine if there are continuously active MUs in the right trapezius muscle during normal computer work using a computer mouse. Fourteen healthy subjects executed an interactive computer-learning program (ErgoLight) for 30 min. Six-channel intr

The trunk-ocular reflex of the rabbit was investigated by recording EMGs of right lateral rectus and splenius muscles. The skull and the chest of the rabbit were restrained and the lower part of the trunk was flexed laterally around the axis at the TH10--11 intervertebral joint. Two kinds of eye movements, small with short latencies and large with longer latencies, were induced counter to the direction of the lateral flexion. The latency of the former was 158 msec (range: 64--200 msec) and that of the latter was 255 msec (range: 180--380 msec).

Two different otological noxes add up in their effect. In some cases, however, the first one may cause a reduction of the noxious effect of the second one. Opinions are divided as to whether the susceptibility to noise of an ear with chronic otitis media is increased or decreased. From 14,300 audiograms we selected those 131 cases with unilateral chronic otitis media and, at the same time, with a typical noise-induced recruitment-positive c5-dip on the other side. There were 86 cases with larger bone conduction hearing loss on the ear with chronic otitis media. In these cases, the bone conduct
