PURPOSE: The vertical rectus abdominis muscle (VRAM) flap is considered a safe and simple option to cover defects of the trunk and proximal thigh. Detailed long-time follow-up studies in oncologic patients including complications and donor site morbidity are rare. In this study, complications and donor site morbidity were analysed.

Lymphedema is common after inguinal lymphadenectomy or resection of groin tumors. Animal studies have shown success using the rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (RAM) flap as a treatment for lymphedema. Four patients with acquired lower extremity lymphedema were treated with a contralateral RAM flap with an inferior cutaneous pedicle left intact to facilitate lymphatic drainage into the unaffected groin. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the imaging findings at sonography and MRI of rectus abdominis muscle strain in tennis players.
CONCLUSION: Asymmetrical hypertrophy of the recti is seen in elite tennis players. The muscle belly hypertrophies on the side opposite the dominant arm and is subject to muscle tears of its deep fibers below the umbilicus. Imaging can be used to show these injuries.

Reconstruction of the tongue after glossectomy is a primary objective in the process of improving the life quality of patients suffering from tongue cancer. We developed a new method of surgical reconstruction of the tongue after hemiglossectomy, with reinnervated rectus abdominis musculoperitoneal flaps. The transversus and rectus abdominis musculoperitoneal (TRAMP) flap, a novel composite flap supplied by the deep inferior epigastric vessels, was used successfully for partial vulvovaginal reconstruction following anterior and posterior exenteration. The cutaneous RAM flap was used successfully to repair a radiation-induced vesicovaginal fistula. Patient selection is important, ideally one with a fatty lower abdominal wall and without a previous incision transecting the inferior rectus muscle below the umbilicus. The RAM flap has excellent vascularity, allows augmentation of the bladder, and permits an extraperitoneal approach, factors that are important when operating in an irradiated field.

Empyema developed in a 62-year-old man after right pneumonectomy for lung cancer. According to the Clagett procedure, an open window thoracostomy was made with two ribs removed. After 5 weeks, primary closure of the fenestra was attempted.
