Roadmap to Recovery: Year 2 of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic altered traditional education models and school nursing practice during the 2020-2021 school year. As schools plan to reopen for the 2021-2022 school year, school nurses must arm themselves with the most recent evidence-based knowledge and tools to promote the health and safety of the school community. Schools will need to continue infection control measures and strategies to support the social emotional needs of students and staff to promote a safe and healthy learning environment on return to school. Partnered with local health departments, school nurses are vital to mi

The similarities and differences of epidemic cycles of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma exacerbations.

The majority of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma exacerbations in both children and adults are associated with respiratory viral infections and are cyclic in nature. Some variation in these cycles is associated with the timing of the appearance of respiratory viruses, particularly influenza and respiratory syncytial virus. Much more, however, is associated with signal events that are of either fixed or predictable timing. In children, asthma exacerbations reach epidemic levels following school return after the summer vacation and these are predominantly associated with r

Traumatic Brain Injuries Impact on School One Month and One Year After Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability among the American population, but the impact TBIs have on the school experience of high school, and post-secondary students, is poorly understood. In this study, a cohort of 79 students, ages 15-22, with mild-to-severe TBIs, were retrospectively identified from the University of Washington Traumatic Brain Injury Database and Sample Repository. The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) was used to determine the frequency at which schooling was impacted by a TBI and identify the most common self-reported issues students faced in thei

Epigenetics in glaucoma: a link between histone methylation and neurodegeneration.

Cervical cancer, caused primarily by human papillomavirus (HPV), causes substantial health burden in the Republic of Palau. Despite availability of the HPV vaccine through a school-based vaccination program for girls beginning in 5th grade, HPV vaccination coverage in Palau has declined since 2020. To understand why, this descriptive cross-sectional study analyzed data from the first opportunity for vaccination for all 5th grade girls enrolled at Koror and Babelthaob schools between August 1, 2020 and June 30, 2024. Data were retrieved from the Ministry of Education, School Health Program, and

Factors influencing school re-entry among adolescents in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The number of out-of-school children and adolescents has been increasing globally. In sub-Saharan Africa, an estimated 23 million adolescents leave school due to poverty, teenage pregnancy, and unspecified illnesses. The reasons for absenteeism are well-known but the factors involved in the decision to return to school have not been analyzed. This study aimed to identify the factors that promote primary school re-entry among chronic adolescent absentees in rural sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Qualitative data were gathered through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and fo

Understanding Concussion Knowledge in Urban Community Settings: Perspectives of School Nurses and Youth Athletic Program Leaders.

This study explored concussion knowledge, education, and organizational policies among school nurses (n = 12) and youth athletic program leaders (n = 14) in the Philadelphia area from June-September 2023. Using semi structured interviews, questionnaires, and thematic analysis, three themes emerged: (1) School nurses and youth athletic program leaders know their roles in concussion management but welcomed more education. (2) System-level gaps in concussion oversight beyond organized sports exist for younger children, those injured via non-sport related mechanisms, in recreational settings, or d

Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal of Role Definition and Responsibility Within the Concussion Management Team for Secondary Schools.

BACKGROUND: Sports- and recreation-related concussions impact the cognitive function of secondary school students during the recovery process. They can cause symptoms such as headache, difficulty concentrating, and memory impairment, which pose a challenge for students during the return to learn (RTL) after injury. Concussion management teams (CMTs) assist the student in managing symptoms and develop an individualized RTL process; however, the ideal composition of professionals involved in the CMT has not been fully evaluated. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to assess current resear

Improving educational and reproductive outcomes for adolescent mothers in South Africa: A cross-sectional analysis towards realising policy goals.

Adolescent mothers face numerous challenges. This study aimed to address the operationalisation of the new South African national policy for young mothers by testing the associations of potential protective provisions with three policy goals: School return, grade promotion, and pregnancy/HIV prevention. Adolescent mothers aged 12-24 from rural and urban communities of South Africa's Eastern Cape completed study questionnaires between 2017-2019. Using multivariate multi-level analysis, we simultaneously estimated associations between hypothesized provisions and protective variables and all poli

Barriers to the Implementation of State Concussion Laws Within High Schools.

PURPOSE: All 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia enacted concussion laws between 2009 and 2014 to mitigate the consequences of concussion among children and adolescents. In response, many high schools started to implement their respective state law that includes three main tenets: (1) concussion education, (2) removal from play, and (3) return-to-play. We aimed to identify barriers to the implementation of these tenets at the school level. METHODS: We conducted 64 semistructured telephone interviews with high school athletic trainers from 26 states and the District of Columbia whose s

Return to work, after head and neck cancer: results from the French VICAN study.

PURPOSE: Returning to work after cancer is a major concern, particularly in the case of head and neck cancer (HNC). As the head and neck sphere is central to communication and appearance, it can be affected to varying degrees, which can be extremely disabling. Returning to work remains a challenge for this vulnerable population. METHODS: Using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses including 153 HNC survivors, we studied how different sociodemographic and clinical factors were associated with non-return to work in the VICAN national epidemiological survey set up in France.
