Primary intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma producing proptosis.

A case is reported of a primary rhabdomyosarcoma occurring in the right subfrontal region of a 16 year old girl. The patient suffered from dull frontal headache and proptosis for three months before hospitalization. The circumscribed and demarcated neoplasm involved the dura mater, and invaded the frontal sinus and roof of the orbit on the same side. The pathogenesis of the tumour is thought to be related to aberrant differentiation of unstable mesenchyme. A suggestion is made that the "medullomyoblastoma" should be classified as a type of neoplasm of mixed mesenchymal and neuroepithelial orig

Late effects of therapy in orbital rhabdomyosarcoma in children. A report from the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study.

Late effects of therapy were evaluated in 50 children surviving orbital rhabdomyosarcoma following treatment on Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study I. All patients had microscopic or gross tumor present following surgery and subsequently received radiotherapy and various combinations of chemotherapeutic agents. Problems in the eye included infections and functional and structural changes. Decreased vision in the treated eye was the most common functional problem and in most patients related to cataract formation, which occurred in 90% of eyes. Changes in the cornea and retina were also seen. Bon

Immunohistochemical study of childhood rhabdomyosarcomas and related neoplasms. Results of an Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma study project.

The authors assessed a panel of immunohistochemical stains against 109 pediatric solid tumors, primarily rhabdomyosarcomas, under the auspices of the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study. Fresh tumor tissue received from participating organizations was divided into portions that were either frozen or fixed in formalin, alcohol, or B5. Immunostaining was performed by the avidin-biotin complex method using monoclonal antibodies to desmin, neurofilaments, vimentin, cytokeratin, and leukocyte common antigen on cryostat sections. Tissue was also embedded in paraffin and stained with antimuscle-specifi

Paratesticular Rhabdomyosarcoma Associated with Tuberculosis.

We report a 16-year-old male patient diagnosed with paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma and mediastinal tuberculous lymphadenitis. The differential diagnosis between high or early stage of rhabdomyosarcoma and tuberculosis (TB) was critical in this patient without a history of TB. Unexpected lymphadenopathies detected during the staging of patients with malignancy should be carefully evaluated, and TB should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis especially in underdeveloped and developing countries. Unnecessary additional treatments increase the rate of mortality and morbidity

Multimodality imaging of vaginal rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a malignant mesenchymal tumor arising from the embryonal muscle cells (rhabdomyoblasts), and is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children and young adults accounting for 4-6% of all malignancies in this age group. Though rare overall, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common malignancy arising in the pediatric female genitourinary tract with sarcoma botryoides being the most common variant of the tumor. In young and adolescent individuals, the cervix and uterus are affected; whereas in infants, vaginal lesions are more common. Imaging plays a crucial role n

PAX immunoreactivity identifies alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.

PAX5 is a member of the paired box transcription factors involved in development and its expression has been well characterized among hematopoietic malignancies of B-cell lineage. Its expression has also been reported in a subset of neuroendocrine carcinomas, urothelial tumors, Merkel cell carcinoma, glioblastoma, and neuroblastoma cell lines. As such, we sought to assess it as a diagnostic marker in the evaluation of pediatric small round blue cell tumors. Tumors selected for evaluation included embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (55 cases), alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) (51 cases), neuroblastoma

Primary ovarian rhabdomyosarcoma in children.

Although rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children, primary rhabdomyosarcomas of the ovary are extremely rare, with only eight well-documented pediatric cases previously reported in the literature. We present two additional cases: an alveolar RMS originating in the right ovary with metastatic spread to the splenic flexure of the colon and to both lungs in a 13-year-old African American girl, and an embryonal RMS arising in the right ovary of a 6-year-old Caucasian girl with pre-operative intra-abdominal rupture and a malignant right pleural effusion. Both patien

[Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma. A case report].

The authors report a case of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma in a 21-year-old patient. The clinical features were dominated by left loin pain, inguinoscrotal pain and scrotal swelling. Transillumination was negative. Laboratory markers (alpha-foetoprotein, beta HCG) were normal. Testicular ultrasound showed an enlarged testis, comprising heterogeneous nodules with infiltration of the spermatic cord. Abdominal ultrasonography and CT scan showed a latero-aortic retroperitoneal lymph node mass and a large left kidney. Chest x-ray was normal. Treatment consisted of radical orchidectomy. Histologic

[Cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma. Its echographic diagnosis].

We report a case of cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma whose initial clinical features were fever and palpitations due to documented ventricular tachycardia. Sequential two-dimensional echocardiographic studies pointed out the presumed diagnosis, showing intracavitary masses at multiple sites appearing within a short period of time. The postmortem examination confirmed the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma and undifferentiated sarcoma in the first two decades of life: a selective review of intergroup rhabdomyosarcoma study group experience and rationale for Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study V.

PURPOSE: To review the importance of prognostic factors in developing new protocols for children with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four studies conducted by the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study (IRS) Group from 1972 through 1991. RESULTS: Favorable prognostic factors are: (1) undetectable distant metastases at diagnosis; (2) primary sites in the orbit and nonparameningeal head/neck and genitourinary nonbladder/prostate regions; (3) grossly complete surgical removal of localized tumor at the time of diagnosis; (4) embryonal/botryoid histology; (5) tumor size < or = 5 cm; and

Spontaneous rhabdomyosarcomas in Dmdmdx rats.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder primarily affecting male children and resulting in progressive degeneration and attempted regeneration of muscle with replacement of myofibers by adipose and fibrotic tissue. DMD patients have mutations in the DMD gene encoding for the large cytoskeletal protein dystrophin, which plays an essential role in the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) as a structural connector within cardiac and skeletal muscle. The absence of dystrophin and DGC proteins leads to increased membrane fragility, dysregulation of calcium homeostasis,

Management of Rhabdomyosarcoma in Pediatric Patients.

Treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) involves a multimodality approach, including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, while minimizing the long-term treatment-related morbidities. This article outlines the key points related to the diagnosis and management of RMS with a focus on current surgical management of RMS at specific tumor sites. There is a need for improved local control approaches and systemic therapy in RMS to reduce locoregional and metastatic relapse, reduce late sequelae of treatment, and improve functional outcomes. Better understanding of the biology of the RMS subtypes fou

[Embryonal botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus].

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of mesenchymal origin with skeletal striated muscular differentiation. It is the most common sarcoma of childhood and has four subtypes: embryonal, alveolar, pleomorphic and spindle cell/sclerosing. Of all of them, the embryonal one is the most prevalent and presents a variant, botryoid, which usually involves hollow organs in the form of a multilobed polypoid mass. We present the case of a 27-year-old woman who consulted for vaginal bleeding and in whom colposcopy revealed a whitish polypoid lesion that was externalized through the external cervical os

MUC4 is expressed in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.

AIMS: Mucin 4 (MUC4) is a transmembrane glycoprotein normally expressed by several human epithelial surfaces, including those of the colon, vagina, and respiratory tract. Although MUC4 overexpression is seen in various carcinomas, its expression among mesenchymal neoplasms is fairly specific to low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma and sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma. Having observed unanticipated anti-MUC4 immunoreactivity in rhabdomyosarcoma, we aimed to further characterise its expression. METHODS AND RESULTS: Expression of MUC4 was assessed by immunohistochemistry in a total of 97 rhabdomyosa

Parameningeal alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in a child.

This is the case of a parameningeal alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) in a 13-year-old boy who presented with painless loss of vision in the right eye, but very few other physical signs. The ARMS diagnosis was confirmed with imaging and molecular characterisation of the tumour. Despite tolerating the initial chemotherapy and radiotherapy regimens, there was leptomeningeal recurrence and the patient unfortunately passed away. Parameningeal ARMS occurs in an area of the body, which leads to a wide variety of possible presenting symptoms, creating a long list of differentials that can delay treatm

Rhabdomyosarcoma of Cervix: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma has known as a highly malignant soft tissue sarcoma. It has been the most common soft tissue sarcoma in childhood, accounting for about 3 to 4 % of all cases of childhood cancer. Rhabdomyosarcoma was rare in adults, accounting for 3% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of female genital tract including uterine cervix in an adult was rare. CASE PRESENTATION: This study has reported a 33-year-old woman presented with abnormal vaginal discharge. Gynecologic examination revealed a cervical mass with grape- like feature protruding into vagina with

[Brachytherapy role in pediatric rhabdomyosarcomas].

Brachytherapy in paediatric malignancies is rarely used, limited to expert institutions. The most frequent tumour sites treated with brachytherapy are gynaecological rhabdomyosarcomas, and prostate/bladder rhabdomyosarcomas. Ballistic advantages make brachytherapy technique the treatment of choice, with a high and selective protection of organs at risk. Techniques, brachytherapy modalities (low dose-rate, high dose-rate, pulsed dose-rate), doses and indications vary according to centres. Brachytherapy advantages are in relation with ballistic properties, allowing a very high dose to the target

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix.

INTRODUCTION: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the uterine cervix is a rare and extremely malignant entity. Generally, embryonal RMS originating in the uterine cervix is usually diagnosed in adolescence. Before the introduction of effective adjuvant chemotherapy, the prognosis of these lesions was poor. We have treated a young woman suffering from this disease using a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy (RT) with excellent results. The medical community should keep in mind that embryonal RMS of the uterine cervix, despite its malignancy and rarity, can be cured if ade
