[Changes of vibration frequency due to root resorption of deciduous tooth].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of vibration frequency of a deciduous tooth due to physiological root resorption. The author developed an analysis system for tooth vibration by applying an impact-hammer to the tooth. Peak frequency (Hz) of the tooth stimulated by the impact-hammer was observed by the analysis system. The following results were obtained: 1) Peak frequency of the tooth vibration shifted to a lower range according to the root resorption both in vitro (simulation model) and in vivo (15 children) and a high positive correlation was found between the peak fr

Microcracks on the Rat Root Surface Induced by Orthodontic Force, Crack Extension Simulation, and Proteomics Study.

Root resorption is a common complication during orthodontic treatment. Microcracks occur on the root surface after an orthodontic force is applied and may be related to the root resorption caused by the orthodontic process. However, the mechanisms underlying root resorption induced by microcracks remain unclear. In this study, a rat orthodontic model was used to investigate the biological mechanisms of root resorption caused by microcracks. First, the first molar was loaded with 0.5-N orthodontic force for 7 days, and microcracks were observed on the root apex surface using a scanning electron

Isolation and Analysis of Aortic Arch and Root Lesions in an Atherosclerotic Mouse Model.

Atherosclerosis, a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases, necessitates a detailed examination of lesion development and progression. This study introduces a comprehensive protocol for the isolation and histological analysis of aortic arch and root lesions in a widely used atherosclerotic mouse model, low-density lipoprotein receptor knock-out (Ldlr-/-) mice. The aortic arch and root are key sites for atherosclerotic lesions, and their examination is critical for assessing the onset, progression, or regression of atherosclerosis, predicting cardiovascular event risks, and identifying potenti

Quality initiatives: quality improvement grand rounds at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center: CT colonography performance review after an adverse event.

As computed tomographic (CT) colonography is being used increasingly in clinical practice, an effective quality improvement process must be ensured. The quality improvement process is outlined for the reader by using an adverse event during CT colonography as an example. Components of this process are the approach to a sentinel event, performance of a root cause analysis, and development of strategies for minimizing errors after a serious adverse event. Important factors include indications and contraindications for the examination, proper imaging technique, training of personnel, complication

Are Increased Masticatory Forces Risk for Primary 2nd Molars without Successors? A 3D FEA Study.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent primary teeth with healthy crown-root structures and acceptable functional and esthetic properties may be preserved over a long-term period if needed. However, they may experience root resorption, ankylosis or infraocclusion especially in the second or third decades of life. Despite a lack of sufficient detailed data, increases in occlusal forces by age are known to cause destructive stresses on root surfaces and periodontal tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing occlusal forces on mandibular persistent primary molars by using 3D finite ele

Persistent extra-radicular bacterial biofilm in endodontically treated human teeth: scanning electron microscopy analysis after apical surgery.

Biofilms are the main cause of endodontic failures. Even the best executed endodontic treatment can fail, when the infection is resistant to treatment or when it is located in inaccessible areas, such as the external surface of the root apex. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by scanning electron microscopy, the presence of bacterial biofilm on endodontically treated teeth considered clinical failures and suitable for apical surgery. Root apices were collected from 20 teeth undergoing apical surgery and one negative control and analyzed under SEM. Digital photomicrographs of the root

Use of an Emergency Manual During an Intraoperative Cardiac Arrest by an Interprofessional Team: A Positive-Exemplar Case Study of a New Patient Safety Tool.

BACKGROUND: An emergency manual (EM) is a set of evidence-based crisis checklists, or cognitive aids, that can improve team performance. EMs are used in other safety-critical industries, and health care simulation studies have shown their efficacy, but use in clinical settings is nascent. A case study was conducted on the use of an EM during one intraoperative crisis, which entailed the assessment of the impact of the EM's use on teamwork and patient care and the identification of lessons for effectively using EMs during future clinical crises. METHODS: In a case study of a single crisis, an

Severe ventral erosion of penis caused by indwelling urethral catheter and inflation of Foley balloon in urethra-need to create list of "never events in spinal cord injury" in order to prevent these complications from happening in paraplegic and tetraplegic patients.

Never Events are serious, largely preventable patient safety incidents that should not occur if the available preventative measures have been implemented. We propose that a list of "Never Events" is created for spinal cord injury patients in order to improve the quality of care. To begin with, following two preventable complications related to management of neuropathic bladder may be included in this list of "Never Events." (i) Severe ventral erosion of glans penis and penile shaft caused by indwelling urethral catheter; (ii) incorrect placement of a Foley catheter leading to inflation of Fole

Application of continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring in the study of spinal nerve root thermal injury in a porcine model.

BACKGROUND: A warning system to avoid potential nerve root thermal injury caused by automatic spine robot is essential. However, there is a lack of basic research to support the development of such warning system. The aims of this study are to confirm the feasibility of continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring (CIONM) in spinal nerve root monitoring and study the exposure time of spinal nerve root thermal injury at different temperature in a porcine model. METHODS: The experiment was carried out on 32 nerve roots of 4 pigs (bilateral L4-S1 nerve roots). Sham group (CIONM only), control group
