Strategy breakdown following muscarinic blockade in rats.

The present study examined the effects of systemically administered atropine sulfate, a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, on a series of probe tests in the retention of a highly-structured serial pattern in a serial multiple choice (SMC) task. Rats were trained on a 24-element pattern composed of eight 3-element chunks ending with a violation element: 123-234-345-456-567-678-781-818 where the digits represent the clockwise position of levers in an octagonal chamber, dashes indicate 3-s pauses termed "phrasing cues," and other intertrial intervals were 1s. In daily acquisition trials rats were

Dissociation between the procedural learning of letter names and motor sequences in developmental dyslexia.

Motor sequence learning has been studied extensively in Developmental dyslexia (DD). The purpose of the present research was to examine procedural learning of letter names and motor sequences in individuals with DD and control groups. Both groups completed the Serial Search Task which enabled the assessment of learning of letter names and motor sequences independently of each other. Control participants learned both the letter names as well as the motor sequence. In contrast, individuals with DD were impaired in learning of the letter names sequence and showed a reliable transfer of the motor

Short-term memory stages in sign vs. speech: the source of the serial span discrepancy.

Speakers generally outperform signers when asked to recall a list of unrelated verbal items. This phenomenon is well established, but its source has remained unclear. In this study, we evaluate the relative contribution of the three main processing stages of short-term memory--perception, encoding, and recall--in this effect. The present study factorially manipulates whether American Sign Language (ASL) or English is used for perception, memory encoding, and recall in hearing ASL-English bilinguals. Results indicate that using ASL during both perception and encoding contributes to the serial s

What to do and how to do it: sequence learning of action effects and transformation rules.

Many goal-oriented actions, for example in tool use, can be characterized by the involvement of two components: The effect that the acting person wants to achieve and the transformation rule that defines the relationship between a bodily movement and the associated action effect. Both in conjunction specify the concrete action that has to be executed. In our experiments, we utilized a sequence learning paradigm to investigate whether these components are represented separately or are bound together to form a more holistic representation of the action. Participants switched between different tr

Counting rate, naming rate, phonological sensitivity, and memory span: major factors in dyslexia.

Children with severe dyslexia were slower in counting from memory and naming alternating digits and letters than those with milder reading impairment. The children most disabled also had poorer phonological sensitivity, shorter digit spans, and lower Verbal IQs, but these variables accounted for no additional variance in prediction of scores on the Wide Range Achievement Test-Revised (R = 0.89).

Effects of marijuana on the task-elicited physiological response.

Ten healthy male marijuana users smoked either a placebo or active (1.8% delta 9-THC) marijuana cigarette during five daily testing sessions. Ten minutes after drug administration, six subjects (Group I) performed a 10-min serial acquisition task and four subjects (Group II) rested quietly. Blood pressure was sampled at 2-min intervals and heart rate (HR) was recorded continuously. Marijuana alone increased HR by 18 beats/min and mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 3 mmHg, while task performance alone increased HR by 4 beats/min and MAP by 5 mmHg. The combination of drug and task performance had g

Rapid sequential processing in dyslexic and ordinary readers.

42 dyslexic and 42 ordinary readers were given a rapid sequential short-term memory task using materials adapted from the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities Visual Sequential Memory subset. Dyslexic readers performed at a similar level to ordinary readers. In Study 2, the same readers were given a 10-piece form board to complete as quickly as possible. Dyslexic readers were significantly slower on this task. Since short-term memory was not a feature of the second task, it was reasoned that short-term memory problems were unlikely to be a feature of dyslexic's performances on rapid seq

Nodal structure and the partitioning of equivalence classes.

By definition, all of the stimuli in an equivalence class have to be functionally interchangeable with each other. The present experiment, however, demonstrated that this was not the case when using post-class-formation dual-option response transfer tests. With college students, two 4-node 6-member equivalence classes with nodal structures of A-->B-->C-->D-->E-->F were produced by training AB, BC, CD, DE, and EF. Then, unique responses were trained to the C and D stimuli in each class. The responses trained to C generalized to B and A, while the responses trained to D generalized to E and F. T

Working memory deficits in children with reading difficulties: memory span and dual task coordination.

The current study investigated the cause of the reported problems in working memory in children with reading difficulties. Verbal and visuospatial simple and complex span tasks, and digit span and reaction times tasks performed singly and in combination, were administered to 46 children with single word reading difficulties and 45 typically developing children matched for age and nonverbal ability. Children with reading difficulties had pervasive deficits in the simple and complex span tasks and had poorer abilities to coordinate two cognitive demanding tasks. These findings indicate that work

Effects of cholinesterase inhibitors on a two-component chained schedule performance in rats.

The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors physostigmine (PHY), tacrine (THA), and heptylphysostigmine (HEP) have been evaluated as potential therapeutics for treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and as prophylactics against organophosphate (OP) poisoning. The above medical applications are based upon the neurochemical principles of elevation of transient levels of acetylcholine (ACh) in brain and reversible inhibition of AChE in blood and brain, respectively. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of these drugs on performance of a two-component chained schedule of differen

Episodic Memory in Amnestic Behavioral Frontotemporal Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.

Behavioral frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) may present with episodic memory deficits. In 38 patients with bvFTD and 61 with Alzheimer's disease (AD) specific measures of verbal memory (learning curves and serial position effects) were studied through the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning test. Forty-two percent of bvFTD showed deficits of delayed recall memory similar to that found in AD including the serial position effects. Amnestic bvFTD had more severe atrophy in the left mesial temporal lobe than non-amnestic bvFTD. AD-like memory deficits are not infrequent in bvFTD and may be in part related

Effects of neostriatal 6-OHDA lesion on performance in a rat sequential reaction time task.

Work in humans and monkeys has provided evidence that the basal ganglia, and the neurotransmitter dopamine therein, play an important role for sequential learning and performance. Compared to primates, experimental work in rodents is rather sparse, largely due to the fact that tasks comparable to the human ones, especially serial reaction time tasks (SRTT), had been lacking until recently. We have developed a rat model of the SRTT, which allows to study neural correlates of sequential performance and motor sequence execution. Here, we report the effects of dopaminergic neostriatal lesions, per

Persistent implicit motor learning alterations following a mild traumatic brain injury sustained during late adulthood.

Introduction: The neurocognitive outcomes of sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) during late adulthood are vastly understudied. In young, asymptomatic adults, mTBI-related synaptic plasticity alterations have been associated with persistent implicit motor sequence learning impairments outlasting the usual cognitive recovery period. The current study examined whether uncomplicated mTBI sustained during late adulthood could exert persistent deleterious consequences on implicit motor sequence learning.Method: Thirty participants (aged 50-70 years) who experienced an uncomplicated mTBI

The effects of delayed reinforcement on variability and repetition of response sequences.

Four experiments examined the effects of delays to reinforcement on key peck sequences of pigeons maintained under multiple schedules of contingencies that produced variable or repetitive behavior. In Experiments 1, 2, and 4, in the repeat component only the sequence right-right-left-left earned food, and in the vary component four-response sequences different from the previous 10 earned food. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the effects of nonresetting and resetting delays to reinforcement, respectively. In Experiment 3, in the repeat component sequences had to be the same as one of the previous

Is the phonological loop responsible for intelligence-related differences in forward digit span?

Children with mild mental retardation were compared with CA-matched and verbal-age-matched children without mental retardation on a forward digit span task. Forward digit span is typically used as a measure of the phonological loop (Baddeley, 1986). We hypothesized that intelligence-related differences in forward digit span are largely due to central executive functioning rather than phonological loop functioning. Results showed that the highly significant group difference in forward digit span was reduced to nonsignificance when a measure of central executive functioning was covaried out.

Digit span and other WISC-R scores in the diagnosis of dyslexia in children.

The examination of subtest scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale is needed to provide confirmatory evidence for various subtest categorizations as there is no consensus about what patterns might be diagnostically useful. The present study supports the use of the ACID/AVID profiles (Arithmetic, Coding or Vocabulary, Information, and Digit Span) as elements in the diagnosis of dyslexia. WISC-R scores from 44 subjects were analyzed for specific subtest patterns of scores which might separate dyslexic individuals from the WISC-R standardization group. Perhaps some WISC-R ACID/AVID profile patt

Dyslexics are impaired on implicit higher-order sequence learning, but not on implicit spatial context learning.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by poor reading ability and impairments on a range of tasks including phonological processing and processing of sensory information. Some recent studies have found deficits in implicit sequence learning using the serial reaction time task, but others have not. Other skills, such as global visuo-spatial processing may even be enhanced in dyslexics, although deficits have also been noted. The present study compared dyslexic and non-dyslexic college students on two implicit learning tasks, an alternating serial response time task in which sequential depende

A developmental, interactive activation model of the word superiority effect.

Parallel distributed processing (PDP) models of reading developed out of an appreciation of the role that context plays in letter and word perception. Adult readers can more accurately identify letters in a word than alone or in other random display contexts, a phenomenon known as the Word Superiority Effect (WSE). We examined the effects of orthographic context on the letter recognition skills of dyslexic children, comparing their performance to adults, and chronological- and reading-age matched groups. Consistent with previous studies, results showed adults better able to identify letters in

[Serial reactions in aphasic patients].

A symptom is reported that has hitherto not been described in neuropsychological literature: Not infrequently, severe aphasics mix automatized verbal series or parts of them not only into their spontaneous speech but also into other modalities of the expressive language. Sometimes this form of automatism replaces a demanded answer. In the speech data of 134 aphasics this symptom was observed in half of the cases. Its incidence was analysed in relation to aetiology, type of aphasia and the modalities in which it was observed. 6 cases are described in detail. The serial reaction is a neuropsycho
