The effect of cigarette smoke extract exposure on the size and sexual behaviour of Drosophila melanogaster.

Drosophila melanogaster is a widely used animal model in human diseases and to date it has not been applied to the study of the impact of tobacco use on human sexual function. Hence, this report examines the effects of different concentrations of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposure on the size and sexual behavior of D. melanogaster. Wild-type flies were held in vials containing CSE-infused culture media at concentrations of 10%, 25%, and 50% for three days, and their offspring were reared under the same conditions before measuring their body size and mating behavior. CSE exposure during dev

An Adolescent with Bestiality Behaviour: Psychological Evaluation and Community Health Concerns.

Bestiality is a serious but less commonly reported form of animal cruelty occurring in a society. It is a punishable sexual offence in India. Bestiality has received little attention in recent psychiatric literature, and even though case reports have been published, an elaborate psychological assessment is often missing. This case report of 18 year old male presented here highlighted the importance of psychological assessment to emphasize on its implications for the further risk assessment of the person, family psycho-education and non-pharmacological intervention for bestialists. The overall

Treatment with steroid hormones and morphine alters general activity, sexual behavior, and opioid gene expression in female rats.

AIMS: Previous studies have shown that brain opioid peptides exert an inhibitory influence on gonadotropin secretion. Different types of brain opioids, such as β-endorphin, enkephalin, and dynorphin, exert their actions by binding to specific opioid receptors (i.e., μ, δ, and κ, respectively). The present study determined the effects of chronic treatment with morphine in female rats with pharmacologically induced estrus on behavior and opioid receptor gene and protein expression in the hypothalamus, striatum, and periaqueductal gray. MAIN METHODS: Female ovariectomized rats treated with estro

Epigenetic changes and neurogenesis associated with socio-sexual behaviors.

Epigenetic mechanisms are essential in neurogenesis during development and adulthood. DNA methylation, histone post-translational modifications, and non-coding RNAs regulate gene expression to maintain the neural stem cell pool and direct the fate of newborn neurons by modulating cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, maturation, and survival. Adult neurogenesis exhibits bidirectional interactions with non-social and socio-sexual factors such as sexual behavior, mate recognition, pair bonding, parental behavior, and offspring recognition. Epigenetic mechanism disruption has been impli

Vitexin alleviates streptozotocin-induced sexual dysfunction and fertility impairments in male mice via modulating the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis.

Diabetes-associated sexual dysfunction and fertility impairments are major secondary complications in diabetic patients and animal models. Natural herbs are important sources of therapeutic agents for diabetic complications. This study investigated the effect of vitexin on male sexual dysfunction and fertility impairments in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 45 mg/kg STZ for 5 consecutive days in mice. Vitexin (10, 20 or 40 mg/kg) and Sildenafil citrate (SC, 5 mg/kg) were administered daily for 62 days after the induction of diabet

Embryotoxic and long-term effects of cadmium exposure during embryogenesis in rats.

The present study was performed to evaluate the long-term behavioral effect in offspring of a subteratogenic Cd dose administered by the oral route to Wistar rat during organogenesis. First, the teratogenic Cd dose was determined by treating pregnant rats with 20 mg/kg Cd from Day 6 to Day 14 of pregnancy and by visceral and skeletal analysis of their fetuses. In a second experiment, pregnant rats treated with this Cd dose were allowed to give birth and nurture their offspring. The physical and behavioral parameters of the offspring were analyzed in infancy and during adulthood. Results showed

Progesterone receptor and dopamine receptors are required in Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol modulation of sexual receptivity in female rats.

Ovarian steroids, estrogen and progesterone, influence the sensitivity of certain neural processes to cannabinoid treatment by modulation of brain dopaminergic activity. We examined the effects of the active ingredient of cannabis, Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), on sexual behavior in female rats and its influence on steroid hormone receptors and neurotransmitters in the facilitation of sexual receptivity. Our results revealed that the facilitatory effect of THC was inhibited by antagonists to both progesterone and dopamine D(1) receptors. To test further the idea that progesterone recept

Sexual differentiation of the brain in man and animals: of relevance to Klinefelter syndrome?

The developing brain is highly sensitive to the organizing effects of steroids of gonadal origin in a process referred to as sexual differentiation. Early hormone effects prime the brain for adult sensitivity to the appropriate hormonal milieu, maximizing reproductive fitness via coordinated physiology and behavior. Animal models, in particular rodents, have provided insight into general principles and the cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain differentiation. Cellular endpoints influenced by steroids in the developing brain include neurogenesis, migration, apoptosis, dendritic growth, an

Sexual behavior and testis morphology in the BACHD rat model.

BACKGROUND: Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by a mutation in the huntingtin (HTT) gene, which results in brain neurodegeneration and peripheral pathology affecting different organs including testis. Patients with HD suffer from motor and cognitive impairment, and multiple psychiatric symptoms. Among behavioral abnormalities in HD, sexual disturbances have often been reported, but scarcely investigated in animal models. The BACHD rat model of HD carries the human full-length mutated HTT (mHTT) genomic sequence with 97 CAG-CAA repeats and displa

Ferula hermonis impairs sexual behavior in hormone-primed female rats.

The influence of Ferula hermonis root extract on sexual behavior was studied in female rats. Sexual receptivity, proceptivity and paced mating behavior were evaluated in ovariectomized females primed with estradiol benzoate (EB) and progesterone (P) and then treated with F. hermonis extract acutely (30 and 60 mg/kg) or subchronically (1 and 10 mg/kg daily for 10 consecutive days). A significant reduction in lordosis responses was observed in rats after acute (60 mg/kg) or subchronic (1 and 10 mg/kg) administration of the plant extract. Similarly, a decrease in proceptive behaviors was exhibite

Chlordiazepoxide facilitates erections and inhibits seminal emission in rats.

Two experiments have been conducted to clarify the effects of the benzodiazepine chlordiazepoxide (CDP) on the different components of male rat sexual behavior. In the first experiment the effects on penile erectile reflexes (PR) of two doses (10 and 30 mg/kg, IP) of CDP were compared with those of vehicle, no-treatment and baseline pre-test in a repeated measures design. In the second experiment the different components of male sexual behavior - PR, mating behavior and spontaneous seminal emission SSE) - were extensively studied after vehicle, 3 and 30 mg/kg CDP treatments. CDP was found to i

Ivermectin reduces sexual behavior in female rats.

Ivermectin (IVM) is an antiparasitic drug that is widely used in domestic animals. In mammals, IVM acts as a γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonist. This neurotransmitter plays an important role in the regulation of female sexual behavior. The present study investigated the effects of therapeutic (0.2 mg/kg) and high (1.0 mg/kg) IVM doses on female sexual behavior in physiological and pharmacological conditions. Female rats in estrus or treated with estradiol valerate to induce sexual behavior 24 h before the experiments were used. Ivermectin was administered 15 min before the sexual obse

6-hydroxydopamine lesions enhance progesterone-facilitated lordosis of rats and hamsters, independent of effects on motor behavior.

The Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA) is an important brain area for progesterone (P(4))'s effects to facilitate female sexual behavior of rodents. We investigated the importance of dopaminergic neurons in the VTA, and two dopaminergic projection sites, the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc), and Caudate Nucleus of the Striatum (CN), in modulating P(4)-facilitated sex and motor behavior. Ovariectomized (ovx) rats and hamsters, administered estradiol benzoate (10 microg) and P(4) (0, 50, 100, 200, or 500 microg), were tested for motor behavior in a chamber that automatically records horizontal beam breaks, and

Sexual behavior and aggression in male mice: involvement of the vomeronasal system.

Recent observations have implicated the vomeronasal (accessory olfactory) system in the chemosensory control of rodent social behaviors. The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of peripheral vomeronasal organ extirpation on sexual behavior, aggression, and urine marking in male mice. Relative to sham-operated control animals, mice lacking vomeronasal organs displayed significantly reduced levels of copulatory behavior and intermale aggression. Urine marking rates were not reduced. The peripheral removal of the vomeronasal organ resulted in complete bilateral deafferentation of the

Effects of male sex hormones on gender identity, sexual behavior, and cognitive function.

Androgens, the male sex hormones, play an essential role in male sexual differentiation and development. However, the influence of these sex hormones extends beyond their roles in sexual differentiation and development. In many animal species, sex hormones have been shown to be essential for sexual differentiation of the brain during development and for maintaining sexually dimorphic behavior throughout life. The principals of sex determination in humans have been demonstrated to be similar to other mammals. However, the hormonal influence on sexual dimorphic differences in the nervous system

Constitutive depletion of brain serotonin differentially affects rats' social and cognitive abilities.

Central serotonin appears a promising transdiagnostic marker of psychiatric disorders and a modulator of some of their key behavioral symptoms. In adult male Tph2 -/- rats, constitutively lacking central serotonin, we tested individual's cognitive, social and non-social abilities and characterized group's social organization under classical and ethological testing conditions. Using unsupervised machine learning, we identified the functions most dependent on serotonin. Although serotonin depletion did not affect cognitive performances in classical testing, in the home-cage it induced compulsive

Multimodal characterization of Yucatan minipig behavior and physiology through maturation.

Brain injuries induced by external forces are particularly challenging to model experimentally. In recent decades, the domestic pig has been gaining popularity as a highly relevant animal model to address the pathophysiological mechanisms and the biomechanics associated with head injuries. Understanding cognitive, motor, and sensory aspects of pig behavior throughout development is crucial for evaluating cognitive and motor deficits after injury. We have developed a comprehensive battery of tests to characterize the behavior and physiological function of the Yucatan minipig throughout maturati
