Centering a Justice-Based Approach to Disability Inclusion in Medical Education.

Despite institutional efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, medical education continues to marginalize students with disabilities through persistent structural, cultural, and procedural barriers. Inaccessible learning environments, inadequate accommodations, and entrenched ableist attitudes contribute to inequitable educational experiences and outcomes for disabled students. These barriers are further compounded for individuals who hold intersecting marginalized identities, particularly those who are racially and ethnically underrepresented in medicine. This commentary applies the disabi

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in organ transplantation.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) have implications for transplant access and outcomes. Inequities in transplantation have been identified over the years for minoritized groups based on race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, and other sociocultural identities. While DEIB initiatives have demonstrated success in improving transplant outcomes for some minoritized groups, many gaps still exist, and additional work is needed. Concerns about these practices have also been raised, and they may create barriers to achieving DEIB goals. This under

Reframing Disability: The Role of Professional Organizations in Fostering Inclusion for Disabled Physicians.

To create and sustain a thriving physician workforce capable of providing the highest quality medical care to the U.S. population, educational and health care institutions must transform narratives about disability and eliminate structural ableism from their policies and practices. By creating inclusive educational and health care environments that welcome and support people with disabilities in medicine, these institutions can improve learning and workplace experiences for all students and physicians, ultimately improving patient care. To do so will require reframing the concept of disability

Promoting Nursing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Through Virtual Reality Learning.

Nurse leaders are foundational to the success of creating an inclusive culture and climate and responding to situations of discrimination, racism, microaggressions, and bias in healthcare settings. This article describes a leadership education initiative using virtual reality to provide diversity, equity, and inclusion training for nurse leaders. Immersion in a lived experience provides a safe and effective learning environment to promote, improve, and exemplify diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and should be explored for other educational applications.

Participation in mainstream community groups by older United States adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A multiple case study.

BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities want to be included in all aspects of community life, but social inclusion continues to be very limited. METHOD: We used a qualitative multiple case study to describe the experiences and perspectives of four older workers or retirees with intellectual and developmental disabilities aged 45 to 63 who each participated in a different socially inclusive community group. RESULTS: Three themes emerged: finding a good match; support for participation; and the outcomes of participating in a mainstream community group. A good match

Industrial-organizational science that matters: Social impact and policy implications in the Journal of Applied Psychology.

This introductory article to the special issue "Social Impact Research" examines the extent to which research published in the Journal of Applied Psychology has addressed pressing social issues related to work and employment. Using BERTopic modeling on 5,865 empirical articles published from the journal's inception in 1917 through June 2024, we identified 99 topics organized into 25 higher order themes, five of which directly reflect social impact: workplace stress, health, and well-being; workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion; organizational justice, ethics, and legal issues; work and em

Neural processing of social participation in borderline personality disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are known to be highly sensitive to social rejection. Social information processing is assumed to play a key role for this shared psychopathological phenomenon. The first steps in social information processing are to encode social cues and to create a mental representation of the social situation. The aim of the current study was to test whether the perception of social participation in patients with BPD and patients with SAD is biased in this initial stage of social processing. Focus was on the

Family intimacy and depression: a comparative study among adolescents in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Substantial research has demonstrated the strong influence of family factors on adolescent depressive symptoms. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship, particularly the moderating effects of sex and sexual orientation, remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the direct and indirect effects of family intimacy on depressive symptoms among adolescents, while examining the mediating role of social inclusion and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, it explored how these effects are moderated by sex and sexual orientation. METHOD: Data from the nationwide S

Exploring the social factors influencing the sense of belonging among medical students with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Medical universities have become more aware of disability inclusion, and have begun taking cognizance of the importance of a supportive environment for students with disabilities. Faculty members can mitigate challenges to legitimacy and belonging by creating safe learning environments built on openness, humility, and actively valuing each learner. However, the factors contributing to these students' sense of belonging in medical university settings remain under-explored. To address this issue, the present study examines social factors influencing the sense of belonging for medic

Salivary cortisol reactivity to social rejection in a simulated video conference: Findings from the O-Cam paradigm.

Social rejection represents a social stressor with well-documented psychological effects, yet biological stress responses have been examined mostly with paradigms of limited ecological validity. This study investigated psychobiological reactions to social rejection using the O-Cam paradigm, a simulated video-conference designed to mirror contemporary social interactions with higher ecological validity. Eighty-four participants were randomly assigned to experience either social rejection or social inclusion during a prerecorded web-conference with two peers. Following the interaction, participa

Reduction of rejection-related emotions by transcranial direct current stimulation over right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex in borderline personality disorder: A double-blind randomized pilot study.

AIMS: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients show negative emotional reactions to both excluding and including social scenarios, with levels normalizing only during extreme inclusion. Prior research among healthy individuals highlights the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (rVLPFC) role in regulating emotional responses to social exclusion, since transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of rVLPFC decreases rejection-related emotions following social exclusion. This pilot study investigated whether, in BPD patients, tDCS over the rVLPFC reduces rejection-related emotions not o

Effects of social exclusion and physical pain in chronic opioid maintenance treatment: fMRI correlates.

Opioids interact with systems processing pain and social stimuli. Both systems are crucial for responding to strains of everyday life and both are linked to relapse risk in opioid-dependent patients. The investigation of those systems seems essential to better understand opioid addiction as a whole. 17 patients on opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) and 21 healthy individuals underwent a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) social ball-tossing (Cyberball) paradigm simulating social inclusion and exclusion. In addition, painful and non-painful temperature stimuli were applied, in order t

Mechanisms of impact of mental health peer support in high-, middle- and low-income settings: mediation analysis of the UPSIDES randomised controlled trial.

AIMS: While there is growing evidence for the effectiveness of peer support (PS) in improving psychosocial outcomes among individuals with severe mental health conditions, the mechanisms through which these effects occur remain insufficiently understood. This study examines whether social inclusion, hope and empowerment mediate the relationship between PS, personal recovery and health and social functioning. METHODS: Data were collected from 565 adults with severe mental health conditions who participated in the multicentre UPSIDES randomised controlled trial across six sites in Germany, Ugan

Investment, integration, and innovation: Fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion across the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study consortium.

The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a multi-site prospective longitudinal cohort study, will examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional development beginning prenatally and planned through early childhood. From the outset, the HBCD Study integrated diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into its core mission, with key elements like an Associate Director for DEI, a DEI values statement, and establishing a DEI committee to help ensure sustainable progress for the future. The DEI Coordinating Committee supports DEI efforts impacting members of the HBCD con

School changers and school remainers: Parents' and pupils' evaluation of inclusion and adolescents' self-concept.

Changing school can be a major upheaval in the life of a teenager, involving change of the school environment, teachers and classmates, often resulting in worse academic performance. The current study compared adolescents who changed during secondary school (school changers) with adolescents who stayed at the same school (school remainers) (N = 814). School change was not related to migration background and special educational needs, but was more likely with shorter parent education and a vocational school track (Lange-Küttner, 2025a). At the beginning of the five-year longitudinal project in

Beyond access: the intersecting role of AAC, literacy, and technology.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, access to communication, literacy, and technology have become essential for citizenship, community inclusion, and social and emotional well-being. This paper reflects my personal experience on these topics, exploring the challenges faced by people who lack access to robust language-based expressive augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools. Drawing on my background as an educator, I discuss the implications of failing to provide such access, highlighting its effect on literacy skills and social inclusion. I also argue that many AAC tec

Exploring Future Research in Adapted Physical Education.

Quality physical education can play a critical role in helping students become more active, physically literate, and develop the skills and interests to remain physically active throughout their lives. The healthy, physically active student is more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful in school. Unfortunately, findings from multiple studies interviewing students with disabilities suggest that students with disabilities are often less active and feel more socially separated from the class compared to their classmates without disabilities in general physical education.
