Suicidal because I don't feel connected or vice versa? A longitudinal study of suicidal ideation and connectedness among child welfare youth.

Suicide is a major public health problem among youth involved with the child welfare system. Although social connectedness rests at the core of many prevention approaches, we know little about this relationship over time in this vulnerable population. This study tested the hypotheses that inverse relationships would exist between connectedness in three social domains (i.e., caregiver, peers, and school) and suicidal ideation over time. The current study used baseline and 18-month follow-up data from 995 youth who participated in the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW II)

[Disembedding and remoralization. Old age security and intergenerational relations in globalized welfare capitalism].

The article reconstructs the changes in provision for old age since the 19th century with regard to the ensuing change in intergenerational relationships. The first finding is a broadening of the arenas of provision for old age, a historical cumulation of family (which is still relevant), welfare state and, increasingly, private provision in financial markets, adding up to a 'welfare mix' in old age. This implies a complexification of intergenerational relationships. The second finding is an ambivalent qualitative change: on the one hand relationships between generations become more anonymous

Comparative On-Farm Welfare Assessment of Sheep in Extensive, Semi-Extensive, and Semi-Intensive Systems.

Sheep welfare outcomes vary depending on production systems, breeds, and environmental conditions. This study examined the effects of extensive, semi-extensive, and semi-intensive sheep production systems on animal welfare in Serbia, using the AWIN Welfare Protocol to evaluate 30 farms. Welfare indicators were categorised into resource-based, management-based, and animal-based metrics. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in space allowance among the production systems (p > 0.05). This suggests that the space provided was adequate for semi-intensive farms and suitable

Supporting Individuals and Families in Community Centers in Greece: Social Workers' Perspectives on Roles, Challenges, and Effectiveness.

PURPOSE: Community Centers represent a milestone in the decentralization of the Greek welfare state, functioning as "one-stop shops" at the municipal level. This study explores social workers' perspectives on their professional roles, systemic challenges, and structural requirements for enhancing effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An exploratory descriptive qualitative design was employed. Eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with social workers across four Community Centers in the Attica region of Greece. Service preferences and willingness to pay for household waste management to achieve sustainability: A choice experiment from rural China.

This study employs a choice experiment (CE) to identify waste management charge (WMC) schemes that most effectively improve household waste management (HWM) in rural China by encouraging household payment and participation, and to assess their impacts on willingness to pay (WTP), government surplus, and total social welfare. The findings reveal strong latent demand for improved HWM, particularly in villages with poor infrastructure, with intrinsic motivation driving participation more than awareness of payment mechanisms. Aligning services with residents' preferences substantially increases WT

Child Welfare Professionals Serving Child Sex Trafficking Victims: Changes in Knowledge and Self-Efficacy Over Time.

Prevention of trafficking is legislated and funded through federal law, with victim services for child sex trafficking assigned to local departments of social services. Among child welfare workers, research has documented mislabeling, misidentification, misunderstanding of policy, and improper care for youth involved in sex trafficking, and pointed to a need for training of professionals. A survey of five years of classes of child welfare workers (n = 1,061) in departments of social services was conducted, measuring changes in the pre-training knowledge and self-efficacy workers arrived with r

Taking Stock: Assessing Animal Welfare in South African Captive Lion Tourism Venues.

South Africa maintains thousands of captive lions and other felids in commercial captive wildlife facilities. Despite ongoing debate regarding the welfare implications of this industry, empirical assessments of welfare conditions remain limited. This study conducted a baseline assessment of welfare and husbandry conditions in public-facing captive lion venues in South Africa. A welfare assessment framework was applied across 34 tourism venues in Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo and North West provinces. Ten welfare indices were evaluated: mobility, environmental noise quality, shelter, hygiene, na

The impact of family-genetic risk scores on social functioning in individuals affected with six major psychiatric and substance use disorders in a Swedish National Sample.

To examine whether the level of genetic risk in psychiatric disorders impacts the social functioning of affected individuals, we examine the relationship between genetic risk factors for major depression (MD), anxiety disorders (AD), bipolar disorder (BD), non-affective psychosis (NAP), alcohol use disorder (AUD), and drug use disorder (DUD) in disordered individuals and five adverse social outcomes: unemployment, residence in areas of social deprivation, social welfare, early retirement, and divorce. We examine all cases with registration for these disorders from 1995 to 2015 in individuals b

The cultivation of a prosocial value orientation through community service: an examination of organizational context, social facilitation, and duration.

Community service is widely regarded as a fundamental experience in preparation for good citizenship, but it remains unclear whether common variants of service are consequential for civic outcomes. This study examines changes in the relative importance assigned to prosocial and egoistic values associated with service through different types of organizations, service prompted by external contingencies, and service that spans a narrow or wide frame of time. Data were drawn from the survey responses of 16,749 secondary school students (50 percent female, 28 percent ethnic minority, modal age = 15

Welfare status and psychosocial adjustment among 100 Hmong refugees.

Although the mental health of recently employed persons has been well studied, the mental health of welfare recipients is not well understood. Among our increasing refugee population, many receive welfare benefits at some point. The Hmong are among those who are highly represented among welfare recipients in several areas of the United States. Do psychiatrists have anything to contribute toward the resolution of high welfare rates? This question is especially relevant in refugee populations who are at increased risk for several psychiatric disorders, including depression, paranoia, and adjustm

Empowerment Model for The Elderly and Community to Improve the Welfare of the Elderly.

This study aims to develop and examine an empowerment model involving older people and the community to support improvements in elderly welfare. Using a mixed-methods design, the study combines quantitative assessment of welfare outcomes with qualitative exploration of empowerment processes. Quantitative data were collected from 210 elderly participants involved in community-based empowerment programs. Welfare was measured across physical, psychological, social, and economic dimensions. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-tests, and multiple regression. The result

First evaluation framework based on the one welfare concept in extensive broiler rearing systems.

The One Welfare concept has emerged to counter the traditional separation of human well-being, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare, emphasizing their interdependence within specific ecological and socio-technical contexts. Despite its promise, the practical operationalization of One Welfare as an evaluation framework remains limited. This study proposes and tests an operational One Welfare approach (OWA) for extensive broiler rearing systems (ERS), explicitly promoting direct and indirect links between animal and human welfare and situating them within the environmental performanc

Education as a tool for improving canine welfare: Evaluating the effect of an education workshop on attitudes to responsible dog ownership and canine welfare in a sample of Key Stage 2 children in the United Kingdom.

One of the core objectives of many animal-welfare organisations is to achieve improvements in animal welfare through school education programmes. However, whilst many charities and organisations develop and deliver these educational activities, impact relating to specific animal welfare attitudes and behaviours remains largely undescribed. This study evaluated the effects of an hour-long dog welfare workshop delivered to children aged 7-11, evaluating 2732 learners in state primary schools across the UK. Two types of workshop were evaluated; "Be Dog Smart" (BDS) and "Responsible Dog Ownership"

[Social medicine aspects of persistent somatoform pain disorder].

Persistent somatoform pain disorder is a mental disease the symptom of which--namely, physical pain--cannot be satisfactorily explained by physical findings. This is a frequently occurring disease. But it is often not identified or at least not recognised at an early stage. This leads to negative effects on the patient (e.g. chronification) and on the national social welfare system (for example, costs can mount up to thousands of million DM for medical and social welfare measures). To reduce these problems as far as possible, it is imperative to recognise the disease at an early stage. In part

The impact of infectious diseases on pig welfare: a scoping review.

This scoping review covers the welfare impacts of infectious disease and of interventions used to control infectious disease in pigs. Thirty-three scientific sources were included in the review after literature searches and selection processes, which was a smaller literature than anticipated. We found evidence consistent with infectious diseases causing behavioural and physiological alterations (increased body temperature, anorexia and reduced activity) consistent with a sickness syndrome in pigs. There was also more limited evidence that infectious disease in pigs causes a shift from pro- to

The Swedish social services' police reporting and children's access to protection and support in child abuse cases: A quantitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child prohibits all forms of violence against children. Sweden was early in introducing a ban on disciplinary violence; however, difficulties have been noted in identifying children in need of protection and providing help for children exposed to violence. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the social services' police reporting and children's access to protection and support in cases of physical and sexual child abuse. METHODS: The sample consisted of 291 child welfare reports from three Swedish municipalities. Data were co
