Sterility of Tranexamic Acid Syringes Prefilled by Tactical Combat Medics in a Garrison Setting.

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic agent that confers a significant mortality benefit in the treatment of hemorrhagic trauma. The benefit of TXA is timedependent; Special Operations Tactical Medics (SOTM) and Special Operations Independent Duty Corpsmen (SOIDC) commonly prefill TXA syringes prior to a mission. However, the sterility of prefilled TXA syringes remains unclear. METHODS: SOTMs (n=40) and SOIDCs (n=11) each filled two syringes with TXA in a garrison-type training setting using their customary preparation technique. As controls, a trained clinical research coo

Impact of Sterilization Method on Protein Aggregation and Particle Formation in Polymer-Based Syringes.

The effects of sterilization methods on the storage stability of erythropoietin (EPO) in polymer-based syringes were assessed by quantifying protein oxidation, aggregation, and particle formation. Micro-particle counting and size exclusion chromatography coupled with a multi-angle light scattering detector demonstrated much lower levels of protein particles and aggregates for EPO stored for 12 weeks in steam-sterilized than in radiation (Rad)-sterilized syringes. Intermediate levels of damage were observed for EPO stored in ethylene oxide-sterilized syringes. HPLC analysis documented that the

Hydrodynamic comparison of the Penumbra system and commonly available syringes in forced-suction thrombectomy.

BACKGROUND: The Penumbra system uses a coaxial separator and continuous extracorporeal suction to remove a clot from a cerebral artery. Forced-suction thrombectomy (FST) involves aspirating clots through the same reperfusion catheter using only a syringe, decreasing the procedure time and supplies needed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate multiple combinations of catheters and syringes to determine the optimal pairing for use in FST. METHODS: Tests were performed using both the Penumbra system and syringes to aspirate water through Penumbra 0.041 inch (041), 4Max, 0.054 inch (054) and 5Max reperfusion

Experience of unpleasant sensations in the mouth after injection of saline from prefilled syringes.

BACKGROUND: Nurses at The Norwegian Radium Hospital have reported that some patients notice an unpleasant smell or taste in accordance with flushing of intravenous lines with commercially available prefilled syringes. We have conducted a study in healthy volunteers to investigate the occurrence, consistency and intensity of this phenomenon. METHODS: A randomised, blinded, crossover study comparing commercial available prefilled saline 9 mg/ml syringes to saline 9 mg/ml for injection in polyethylene package was performed in 10 healthy volunteers. The volunteers were given intravenous injection

Pharmacy access to syringes among injecting drug users: follow-up findings from Hartford, Connecticut.

OBJECTIVE: To break the link between drug use and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), in 1992 the state of Connecticut rescinded a 14-year ban on pharmacy sales of syringes without a physician's prescription. In 1993, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) evaluated the impact of the new legislation on access to syringes among injecting drug users (IDUs) and found an initial pattern of expanded access. However, it also found that some pharmacies, after negative experiences with IDU customers, reverted to requiring a prescription. This chapter reports findings from a four-year

Needle and syringe coverage per injection and factors associated with needle sharing among clients of the Stockholm Needle and Syringe Program, 2013-2023.

BACKGROUND: Needle and Syringe Programs (NSP) are a cornerstone of harm reduction, yet evidence on whether they adequately meet injection-related needs and reduce needle sharing in real-world settings, particularly where NSP were introduced late, remains limited. We examined needles to injection coverage and predictors of needle sharing among clients of the Stockholm NSP between 2013 and 2023. METHODS: Using data from a national clinical monitoring system, baseline and repeated follow-up surveys were linked to service data. Injection coverage was assessed by comparing self-reported injection

Examining risk behavior and syringe coverage among people who inject drugs accessing a syringe services program: A latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Injection drug use (IDU) remains a significant public health problem. IDU has been associated closely with the opioid crisis; driving overdose, HIV, and Hepatitis C (HCV) infection nationwide. Syringe services programs (SSPs) remain pivotal evidence-based interventions to reduce harm and engage subgroups of people who inject drugs (PWID). This study aims to provide policy considerations from the IDEA SSP, the first legal SSP in the state of Florida. METHODS: We performed a latent class analysis on patterns of substance use among participants (N = 982) newly enrolled in a syringe

Prevalence and predictors of transitions to and away from syringe exchange use over time in 3 US cities with varied syringe dispensing policies.

Syringe exchange programs (SEPs) can reduce HIV risk among injecting drug users (IDUs) but their use may depend heavily on contextual factors such as local syringe policies. The frequency and predictors of transitioning over time to and from direct, indirect, and non-use of SEPs are unknown. We sought, over one year, to: (1) quantify and characterize transition probabilities of SEP attendance typologies; (2) identify factors associated with (a) change in typology, and (b) becoming and maintaining Direct SEP use; and (3) quantify and characterize transition probabilities of SEP attendance befor

Time-series analysis of presentations to four syringe dispensing machines and a needle and syringe programme during COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Australian harm reduction services are provided via a mix of modalities, including fixed-site needle and syringe programmes (NSP) and syringe-dispensing machines (SDMs). SDMs are cost-effective and provide 24-h anonymous access to needles/syringes, often to underserved geographic areas, and can attract clientele who may choose not to use NSPs. The introduction of COVID-19 control measures saw disruptions and adaptations to the provision of harm reduction services. It is possible that SDMs filled the gap in otherwise disrupted harm reduction services in Melbourne. In this paper, we

Double-chamber syringe versus classic syringes for peripheral intravenous drug administration and catheter flushing: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of catheter-related complications is nowadays an important topic of research. Flushing catheters is considered an important clinical procedure in preventing malfunction and several complications such as phlebitis or infection. Considering the latest guidelines of the Infusion Nurses Society, the flushing should be carried out both pre- and post-drug administration, requiring different syringes (with associated overall increased times of preparation/administration of intravenous medication by nurses, and also increasing the need for manipulation of the venous catheter

Effect of legal status of pharmacy syringe sales on syringe purchases by persons who inject drugs in San Francisco and San Diego, CA.

BACKGROUND: Sharing blood-contaminated syringes is the main risk factor for acquiring and transmitting blood-borne infections among persons who inject drugs (PWID). To reduce this risk, in 2005, California enacted legislation allowing local health jurisdictions to legalize non-prescription syringe sales after approving a disease prevention demonstration project (DPDP). With San Francisco approving a DPDP immediately and San Diego never approving one, we compared PWID across cities for their use of pharmacies PWID to obtain syringes. METHODS: PWID age 18-30 years old were recruited into separa

"SYRI" - A hands-on teaching model for SYRInging of nasolacrimal duct.

BACKGROUND: Nasolacrimal duct (NLD) screening is a standard before cataract surgery. Lacrimal sac pressure and syringing rules out NLD obstructions.[1] However, lacrimal syringing is invasive and risks iatrogenic injury to the lacrimal drainage system (LDS).[2]. PURPOSE: Practice model for lacrimal syringing and understanding outflow obstructions. SYNOPSIS: The model included an inner functional part and an outer mechanical part. Two circular apertures were first made in the ink dropper (lacrimal sac) and two hollow silicone tubing of 10 mm length were glued to the apertures (upper and lower

Soundless Trouble: Syringe Pump Malfunction and the Hypotension Threat.

Drug infusion devices have become indispensable tools in ICU patient care, drug delivery, and operation rooms (OR) and for controlled fluid delivery. Syringe pump safety is paramount in healthcare and laboratory settings to ensure accurate medication delivery and prevent adverse events. Healthcare professionals must receive thorough training on syringe pump operation, including loading syringes, programming infusion rates, and responding to alarms. Using the correct syringe size and type is essential to prevent inaccuracies in drug/fluid delivery. Regular calibration and maintenance checks are

Understanding the effect of counterpressure buildup during syringe injections.

The pain felt during injection, typically delivered via a hypodermic needle as a single bolus, is associated with the pressure build-up around the site of injection. It is hypothesized that this counterpressure is a function of the target tissue as well as fluid properties. Given that novel vaccines target different tissues (muscle, adipose, and skin) and can exhibit a wide range of fluid properties, we conducted a study of the effect of volumetric flow rate, needle size, viscosity and rheology of fluid, and hyaluronidase as an adjuvant on counterpressure build-up in porcine skin and muscle ti
