Hindlimb adaptations in Ourayia and Chipetaia, relatively large-bodied omomyine primates from the Middle Eocene of Utah.

North American omomyids represent a tremendous Eocene radiation of primates exhibiting a wide range of body sizes and dietary patterns. Despite this adaptive diversity, relatively little is known of the postcranial specializations of the group. Here we describe hindlimb and foot bones of Ourayia uintensis and Chipetaia lamporea that were recovered from the Uinta B member (early Uintan Land Mammal Age), Uinta Formation, Utah. These specimens provide insights into the evolution of postcranial adaptations across different body sizes and dietary guilds within the Eocene primate radiation. Body mas

Comparison of bone and muscle growth in turkey lines selected for increased body weight and increased shank width.

A subline (FL) of a long-term growth-selected line (F) of turkeys was established by mass selecting solely for increased shank width at the narrowest point (dew claw). A comparison was made of bone and muscle growth in Line FL (fourth generation of selection), Line F (17th generation of selection), and a randombred control (RBC2, the base population of F) at 8, 16, and 20 wk of age. Also, a sample of the tibiotarsal and femur bones was studied histologically for evidence of pathological conditions. No significant pathological changes were observed in bones from turkeys of the different lines a

Elastase-Treated Auricular Cartilage: Feasibility as a Substitute for Native Tarsus.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of upper eyelid defects is challenging due to paucity of fungible local tissue and a lack of adequate tarsal substitutes. Cartilage is too stiff to be directly implanted in the posterior lamella due to the risk of corneal damage with blinking. Since elastin is a key structural element in elastic cartilage, the authors hypothesized that elastase treatment of cartilage may reduce cartilage's stiffness sufficiently to make it a feasible posterior eyelid lamella substitute. METHODS: Porcine auricular cartilage was treated with elastase or buffer control. Histopathology, el

Trauma to the carpus, tarsus, and phalanges of dogs and cats.

The methods described are those currently employed by the authors for the injuries described. As surgical results accumulate, we hope to modify and improve our methods. Many injuries to the carpus and tarsus have been omitted. Many questions remain unanswered. How long must external coaptation be applied? When is the optimum time for removal of internal fixation devices? Are sclerosing agents more successful for the management of interphalangeal luxations than primary suturing? Should autogenous cancellous bone be used in all arthrodeses? What is the best method of handling sesamoid fractures,

Distal border synovial invaginations of the equine distal sesamoid bone communicate with the distal interphalangeal joint.

OBJECTIVES: Macroscopic studies have suggested a link between distal border synovial invaginations of the navicular bone and the distal interphalangeal joint. However, many practitioners consider that these invaginations are directly and solely related to navicular disease. The objective was to investigate the communication pattern of these synovial invaginations with the synovial compartments of the distal interphalangeal joint and the navicular bursa, using minimally invasive imaging techniques. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, 10 cadaveric limbs with radiographically evident

Prevalence of osteochondral fragments, osteochondrosis dissecans and palmar/plantar osteochondral fragments in Hanoverian Warmblood horses.

In this study, the prevalences of osteochondral fragments in the distal (DUI) and proximal interphalangeal joints (PIJ) as well as in the fetlock, hock and stifle joints, of palmar/plantar osteochondral fragments in the fetlock joints (POFs) and of osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) in fetlock, hock and stifle joints were estimated in a large sample of Hanoverian Warmblood horses. For this purpose, radiographic findings of 9478 Hanoverian Warmblood horses collected from 2005 to 2011 were analyzed. Overall 31.9% of the horses showed one or more osteochondral fragments in at least one joint. The fe

Use of contoured bar transhock external fixators in 17 cats.

Seventeen cats with injuries involving the distal tibia, talocrural joints, tarsus and metatarsus were treated with contoured connecting bar transhock external fixators as either primary or secondary fixation. The assemblies stabilised all the injuries successfully. Fracture union was achieved in 11 out of 12 cases. Excellent results were achieved in eight cats and the outcome was satisfactory in a further five. Those cats with injuries involving talocrural joint luxation with displacement and significant periarticular soft tissue disruption had poorer long-term results. Complications occurred

Effect of litter quality on foot pad dermatitis, hock burns and breast blisters in broiler breeders during the production period.

Foot pad dermatitis and hock burn lesions are a form of contact dermatitis, a condition affecting skin areas in contact with unsuitable or irritating material. Contact dermatitis is a common problem, reducing the welfare of broilers, and is believed to also affect broiler breeders. However, there is very little research on contact dermatitis in breeders. This study followed the severity of foot pad lesions in broiler breeders throughout the production period. At slaughter the presence of hock burns and breast blisters was also determined. In addition, changes in litter condition over time and

Histopathological findings on ulcerative lesions of carpal and tarsal joints in Japanese black cattle.

In order to determine the pathogenesis of ulcerative lesions of the articular cartilages in Japanese Black cattle, tissue samples of the ulcerative lesion, marginal portion of the ulcer, macroscopically normal portions and synovial membranes were histopathologically examined by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and contact microradiography. The results are summarized as follows: (1) In the ulcerative lesions, degeneration and complete destruction of articular cartilage and its replacement with a proliferation of myelogenic connective tissue were observed. (2) In macroscopically no

[Clinical, radiotelemetric and x-ray research on erythematous polyarthritis in lambs].

Experimental investigations were carried out with 6 lambs each infected i/v with 2 cm3 of a 24-hour broth culture of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae rated at 10(8) microbial cells per cu. cm. The clinical state of the animals was followed up in the course of 60 days, the changes in the cardiovascular system and those in the movements of the rumen being recorded radiotelemetrically, while the changes taking place in the joints were studied roentgenographically. It was found that the causative agent of swine erysipelas was strongly pathogenic for the lambs following a hematogenic infection, causing

Determinants of the repeated-bout effect after lengthening contractions.

OBJECTIVE: Stresses to skeletal muscle often result in injury. A subsequent bout of the same activity performed days or even weeks after an initial bout results in significantly less damage. The underlying causes of this phenomenon, termed the "repeated-bout effect" (RBE), are unclear. This study compared the protective effect of two different injury protocols on the ankle dorsiflexors in the rat. We hypothesized that the RBE would occur soon after the initial injury and persist for several weeks and that the RBE would occur even if the second injury was performed under different biomechanical

Repair of a coracoid luxation and a tibiotarsal fracture in a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

A 4.5-kg, adult bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was presented after being found unable to fly. Crepitus was palpated in the left shoulder; however, the wing position was normal. Radiographs revealed caudoventral luxation of the left coracoid, affecting its distal articulation with the clavicle and its proximal articulation with the sternum. The luxation affecting the coracoid-sternum articulation was repaired by using a 4-hole, 1.5-mm T-plate and a 6-hole, 2.0-mm dynamic compression plate (DCP) placed side by side. The luxation affecting the coracoid and the clavicle was repaired by 2 ce

Effects on recovery of soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles of prolonged wheel running during a period of repeated nerve damage.

The right sciatic nerve in NMRI mice was frozen under anaesthesia 13 times at three-week intervals for a total period of 8.5 months. During this period, but not afterwards, one sub-group of these mice had access to running wheels in which the animals ran several kilometres per night, thereby actively or passively training reinnervated or denervated leg muscles, as well as the intact contralateral muscles. A number of distinct effects persisted for as long as 14-18 weeks after the termination of this "endurance training". In reinnervated soleus muscle, tetanic force was significantly higher (37

Electromyographic and behavioral analysis of horses submitted to medial patellar desmotomy.

The passive stay apparatus works by blocking flexion of the knee and tarsus joints in the horse, preventing muscle fatigue. During ambulation, if this mechanism fails to release, the animal will present upward fixation of the patella, which in severe cases, can only be treated by medial patellar desmotomy (MPD). The objective of this study was to investigate the possible electromyographic and behavioral changes, after the impairment of the passive stay apparatus, in horses who have undergone MPD surgery. Five horses presenting dorsal fixation of the patella underwent electromyographic measurem

Hair cortisol concentration in pre- and postpartum dairy cows, and its association with body condition, hock health, and reproductive status.

The objective of this study was to investigate the profiles of hair cortisol concentrations as an index of chronic stress in dairy cows in association with their health, nutrition, and reproductive parameters. For 25 Holstein dairy cows, hair was collected from the tail switch -19.2 ± 11.4, 44.8 ± 11.9, 103.0 ± 9.9, and 168.0 ± 9.7 days postpartum (L0, L1, L2, and L3, respectively). Body condition scores were negatively correlated with hair cortisol concentrations (r = -0.255), and hock health scores were positively correlated with hair cortisol concentrations (r = 0.236, p < 0.05). Hair corti

Effect of slope and sciatic nerve injury on ankle muscle recruitment and hindlimb kinematics during walking in the rat.

Slope-related differences in hindlimb movements and activation of the soleus and tibialis anterior muscles were studied during treadmill locomotion in intact rats and in rats 4 and 10 weeks following transection and surgical repair of the sciatic nerve. In intact rats, the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles were activated reciprocally at all slopes, and the overall intensity of activity in tibialis anterior and the mid-step activity in soleus increased with increasing slope. Based on the results of principal components analysis, the pattern of activation of soleus, but not of tibialis anteri
