A yellowish subconjunctival lesion in an infant-congenital orbital fat herniation.

A very rare case of a congenital orbital fat herniation is demonstrated. Clinically, the child presented a progressive, small yellowish and mobile mass on the temporal orbital wall of her right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a fat isointensive structure in T1-weighing without contrast enhancement. The possible aetiology of the herniation could be a congenital weakness of the Tenon's capsule or the conjunctival fornix.

Integrin αvβ6 mediates the effects of age-related decreases in matrix stiffness on Tenon's fibroblast activation and bleb scarring in glaucoma.

Glaucoma, including primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma, leads to optic nerve injury and visual field loss, often necessitating surgical intervention to lower intraocular pressure (IOP). Trabeculectomy, the most common glaucoma surgery, could fail due to excessive scarring of the filtering bleb, driven by the hyperproliferation of human Tenon's fibroblasts (HTFs). Herein, the impact of aging on matrix stiffness in Tenon's capsule tissue, the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness in the phenotypic transformation of HTFs, and the regulatory function of in

Tenon's Patch Graft: A Review of Indications, Surgical Technique, Outcomes and Complications.

PURPOSE: Corneal perforations are common corneal emergencies faced by ophthalmologists across the globe. There are multiple modalities of management, most of which require an eye bank support or availability of tissue adhesives. Tenon's patch graft (TPG) is a technique that does not depend on these factors as the graft is harvested from the same eye of the patient. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the indications, technique, normal postoperative course, and management of complications. METHODS: After carrying out a literature search on "tenon's capsule", "corneal patch graf

[The filtration "pseudopad"].

Among 10 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma with a filtration "pseudo-cushion" that prevented compensation of intraocular pressure after trabeculectomy, normalization of intraocular pressure by means of medicamentous treatment (thymolol) could be achieved in 1 patient; in the rest of the patients surgical intervention was required. It is stated that the most effective is early surgical intervention: dissection of the Tenon's capsule "cyst" and resection of the episclera in the zone of the primary surgery.

Sub-Tenon's anaesthesia versus topical anaesthesia for cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: Local anaesthesia for cataract surgery can be provided by either sub-Tenon or topical anaesthesia. Although there is some work suggesting advantages to both techniques, there has been no recent systematic attempt to compare both techniques for all relevant outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness of topical anaesthesia (with or without the addition of intracameral local anaesthetic) and sub-Tenon's anaesthesia in providing pain relief during cataract surgery. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library, 2006, Iss

Congenital absence of the superior oblique tendon in Noonan-neurofibromatosis syndrome.

A 5-year-old girl with Noonan-neurofibromatosis syndrome was diagnosed with bilateral superior oblique palsy. At surgery, the right superior oblique tendon was absent, and further exploration revealed abnormal tissue inserting into Tenon's capsule. Orbital imaging was not performed. Congenital absence of the superior oblique tendon was diagnosed. Although Noonan syndrome is known to have many ocular manifestations, absence of the superior oblique tendon has not been previously reported.

Sub-Tenon's versus Topical Anesthesia for Effectiveness of Analgesia During Cataract Surgery: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Tenon's and topical anesthesia are the most common anesthetic techniques employed for cataract surgery. The objectives were to compare the effectiveness of intraoperative analgesia between the two techniques. METHODS: A systematic review was performed of three databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL) from inception until August 2023. Included were adult patients undergoing routine cataract surgery with sub-Tenon's or topical anesthesia. Excluded were studies using systemic medications and complicated surgeries. The primary outcome was intraoperative analgesia assessed by patient r

Generalized fibrosis of the extraocular muscles.

We studied four patients with the general fibrosis syndrome. One patient had bilateral inguinal hernias and unilateral cryptorchism; the other patients had no other congenital abnormalities. The patients developed normally both neurologically and metally. We successfully treated amblyopia and achieved good functional and cosmetic results with strabismus and blepharoptosis surgery. Histopathologic study revealed fibrous infiltration of extrinsic eye muscle and Tenon's capsule without inflammatory changes.

Paracellular permeability of corneal and conjunctival epithelia.

The paracellular permeability of normal rabbit cornea and conjunctiva was studied in vivo and in vitro. After intravenous administration, horseradish peroxidase was found to percolate to the intercellular space of conjunctival epithelia and was restricted by the tight junctions of the superficial epithelium. Only minimal tracer was present in the limbus and cornea. The difference between corneal and conjunctival paracellular pathways was further compared in vitro by tissue perfusion studies using various tracers from subepithelial space to apical surface. The intact full-thickness cornea was p

The use of poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) as a microshunt to treat glaucoma.

The InnFocus MicroShunt® is a minimally invasive glaucoma drainage microtube used to shunt aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye to a flap formed under the conjunctiva and Tenon's capsule. The safety and clinical performance of this device approaches that of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C, the current 'gold standard' treatment for advanced glaucoma. The invention of a new biomaterial called poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) or 'SIBS' is the enabling factor which led to the success of this product. SIBS is ultrastable with virtually no foreign body reaction in the body

Effect of cauterization on the subconjunctival fibrovascular reaction in rabbit eyes.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study is to investigate the effect of episcleral cauterization during conjunctival autograft surgery on subconjunctival fibrovascular reaction in rabbit eyes. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into Control Group (n = 12) and Cautery Group (n = 12). In the Control Group, a 4 × 4 mm free conjunctival graft was elevated, the underlying Tenon's capsule was excised, and the free graft was sutured back to its original place with 10-0 nylon sutures. In the Cautery Group, in addition to the same surgical steps, the episclera was cau

Clinical application and outcome of Tenon's patch graft: A comprehensive review.

Corneal perforations are potentially sight-threatening conditions if not promptly treated. Management depends on the size, location, cause, and severity of the perforation. Various methods, including tissue adhesives, amniotic membrane grafting (AMG), and keratoplasty, are available. However, the limited availability of donor tissue in emergencies poses a significant challenge. Recently, Tenon's patch grafting (TPG) has emerged as a promising treatment option due to its autologous nature, availability, and lack of immunogenicity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of various aspects

Traumatic transection of the inferior and medial rectus muscles: a rare incident.

A 68-year-old woman was referred to the emergency room for globe trauma of the left eye. Initial examination demonstrated absent adduction and infraduction. During preliminary repair, total transection of the medial and inferior rectus muscle bellies was noted, but the retracted proximal muscle segments could not be immediately retrieved. On re-exploration 36 hours later, both retracted muscle segments were recovered by tracing Tenon's capsule and reconnected to the distal portions of the muscles. At her postoperative month 1 visit she was orthotropic in primary gaze, with residual infraductio
