BACKGROUND: Due to the general aging of society, the prevalence and incidence of dementia are expected to increase considerably. In order to timely identify patients and assess their need for treatment and/or supportive measures, comprehensive and easy access screening methods are required, which, however, are yet to be developed. To date, several biomarkers for the presence of dementia on high-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCT-A) images were identified.
AIM: To summarize previously identified OCT biomarkers in dementia and to assess their

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) keratitis remains a leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Although all forms of HSV keratitis are commonly recurrent, the risk is greatest in stromal keratitis, which is the most likely to result in corneal scarring, thinning, and neovascularization. Recent studies showed the ability of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) to detect and study vascular abnormalities in the anterior segment, including abnormal corneal vessels. This study intends to investigate the potential of OCTA device to image and describe quantitatively the vascul

Canaliculitis is an uncommon inflammation of the lacrimal canaliculi, and it is often misdiagnosed as conjunctivitis or dacryocystitis. There are no gold-standard methods to diagnose canaliculitis, therefore newer methods such as ulrasound biomicroscopy are being introduced. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) is being utilized to evaluate punctum and canaliculus, but no previous study has applied anterior OCT for canaliculitis. One case of canaliculitis with canaliculith was diagnosed by anterior segment OCT noninvasively, by successful detection of canaliculith. Pouting of th

Geographic atrophy (GA) represents the non-exudative late stage of age-related macular degeneration and constitutes a leading cause of legal blindness in the developed world. It is characterized by areas of loss of outer retinal layers including photoreceptors, degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium, and rarefication of the choriocapillaris. As all three layers are functionally connected, the precise temporal sequence and relative contribution of these layers towards the development and progression of GA is unclear. The advent of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) has all

Retinal microcirculation shares similar features with cerebral small blood vessels. Thus, the retina may be considered an accessible 'window' to detect the microvascular damage occurring in the setting of neurodegenerative disorders. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is a non-invasive imaging modality providing depth resolved images of blood flow in the retina, choroid, and optic nerve. In this review, we summarize the current literature on the application of OCT-A in glaucoma and central nervous system conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sc

Cohen syndrome is a rare disease that causes myopia and retinal degeneration in the setting of developmental delay and characteristic craniofacial features. We report optical coherence tomography (OCT) abnormalities in 4 patients with Cohen syndrome, 2 of whom have longitudinal follow-up. All subjects had schisis-like changes, with cystoid spaces in the inner retina as well as diffuse outer retinal atrophy sparing the subfoveal region. Ophthalmologic findings in 1 patient led to the work-up that resulted in a diagnosis of Cohen syndrome, suggesting that characteristic retinal abnormalities vis

A 14-year-old female was admitted with a history of high-grade fever. On admission, she underwent a comprehensive clinical, laboratory, and radiological evaluation. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest revealed multiple, tiny, nodular opacities in a ground-glass pattern bilaterally. Sputum studies were positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Dilated fundus examination revealed multiple, yellow-white, deep choroidal lesions consistent with choroidal tubercles. She underwent optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in both eyes, which revealed normal superficial

PURPOSE: To explore the impact of childhood lensectomy on posterior segment development.
METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study at children's eye clinics at a tertiary referral center in London, UK. We included 45 children age 4 to 16 years with healthy eyes and 38 who had undergone lensectomy. We acquired posterior segment optical coherence tomography scans of both eyes. We used parametric and nonparametric tests in SPSS24 for the comparison of parameters between groups and within individuals; a P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. The main outcome measures were foveal pi

Optical coherence tomography is a non-invasive ocular imaging technique that is frequently used in the diagnosis and monitoring of optic nerve or retinal disease. Advances in optical coherence tomography speed and image processing capability allow increased use of the modality in clinical practice, especially in younger children. This review outlines the challenges involved in imaging children, highlights the technological progress, the importance of acquiring normative data and, finally, focuses on the clinical applicability of optical coherence tomography in our paediatric population with va

The article reviews literature on optical coherence tomography (OCT) - one of the modern methods of early diagnostics of primary open-angle glaucoma, which has won great popularity among Russian and foreign ophthalmologists. In addition to a summary of the history of the emergence and development of this method, the main purpose was to compare the investigation results and the analysis of the optic disc as the main target subjected to pathological alterations in glaucoma development. Most of the studies comparing the diagnostic capabilities of OCT and Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT) in the

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To explore the clinical utility of intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) for the management of vitreoretinal conditions.
RECENT FINDINGS: The role of iOCT in guiding surgical decision-making and surgical manipulations during vitreoretinal procedures has been evaluated by multiple studies. This imaging modality is emerging as a valuable asset during procedures for vitreoretinal interface disorders, retinal detachments, submacular surgeries and therapeutics, and in pediatric conditions such as retinopathy of prematurity. iOCT allows the surgeon to assess completi

Fovea plana is characterized by the anatomical absence of the foveal pit in eyes with normal visual function. The authors have analyzed three cases of idiopathic fovea plana with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). As previously reported, the authors found the absence of a foveal avascular zone in all cases with OCTA; however, a preserved fusion of both the superficial and the deep capillary plexuses was found around the foveal center. This novel observation cannot be detected with conventional dye-based angiography, in which the deep capillary plexus is not visualized. [Ophthalmi

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has opened new horizons for intravascular coronary imaging. It utilizes near-infrared light to provide a microscopic insight into the pathology of coronary arteries in vivo. Optical coherence tomography is also capable of identifying the chemical composition of atherosclerotic plaques and detecting traits of their vulnerability. At present it is the only tool to measure the thickness of the fibrous cap covering the lipid core of the atheroma, and thus it is an exceptional modality to detect plaques that are prone to rupture (thin fibrous cap atheromas). Vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) is a gynecological cancer with an incidence of two to three per 100,000 women. VSCC arises from vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), which is diagnosed through painful punch biopsy. In this study, optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used to differentiate between normal and VIN tissue. We hypothesize that (a) epidermal layer thickness measured in OCT images is different in normal tissue and VIN, and (b) quantitative analysis of the attenuation coefficient (μoct) extracted from OCT data differentiates VIN from normal vulvar tissue.
