Evaluating dissolved organic matter and trihalomethanes removal in conventional urban water treatment plants in Indonesia: A performance monitoring approach.

The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) plays a critical role as disinfection by products (DBPs) precursor in Dago Pakar Unit water treatment plant (WTP). This study aims to assess the potential formation of regulated DBP, trihalomethanes (THMs) influenced by NOM characteristics at the Dago Pakar Unit WTP. The study involved the analysis of physicochemical parameters, spectral NOM characterization, and DBPs formation potential, particularly THMs. The results indicated that the physicochemical parameters of temperature and residual chlorine did not comply with quality standards, while pH,

Profiles, variability and predictors of concentrations of blood trihalomethanes and urinary haloacetic acids along pregnancy among 1760 Chinese women.

Blood trihalomethanes (THMs) and urinary haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the leading candidate biomarkers for disinfection byproduct (DBP) exposure. However, no studies have assessed the exposure profiles, temporal variability, and potential predictors of these biomarkers during pregnancy. Here we collected blood (n = 4304) and urine samples (n = 4165) from 1760 Chinese pregnant women during early, mid-, and late pregnancy, which were separately analyzed for 4 THMs and 2 HAAs. We calculated the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) to assess the variability of these biomarkers and estimated t

Health risk assessment of trihalomethanes mixtures from daily water-related activities via multi-pathway exposure based on PBPK model.

In this study, the concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs) in tap water and direct drinking water were analyzed, and based on the human behavior patterns and building parameters, the concentrations of THMs in indoor air were simulated with the water-air concentration conversion model. In addition, concentrations of THMs in human tissues were predicted based on physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model, and the health risk of THMs for participants were estimated. Furthermore, the carcinogenic risk of mixtures according to the method proposed by USEPA and PBPK model based method were c

Mechanistic Study on the Formation of Cl-/Br-/I-Trihalomethanes during Chlorination/Chloramination Combined with a Theoretical Cytotoxicity Evaluation.

Chlorination followed by chloramination can be used to mitigate the formation of potentially toxic iodinated disinfection byproducts (I-DBPs) while controlling the formation of regulated chloro-bromo-DBPs (Cl-/Br-DBPs). Water samples containing dissolved organic matter (DOM) isolates were subjected to 3 disinfection scenarios: NH2Cl, prechlorination followed by ammonia addition, and HOCl alone. A theoretical cytotoxicity evaluation was carried out based on the trihalomethanes (THMs) formed. This study demonstrates that the presence of bromide not only enhances the yield and rate of iodate form

Development of physiologically based toxicokinetic models for improving the human indoor exposure assessment to water contaminants: trichloroethylene and trihalomethanes.

Generally, ingestion is the only route of exposure that is considered in the risk assessment of drinking water contaminants. However, it is well known that a number of these contaminants are volatile and lipophilic and therefore highly susceptible to being absorbed through other routes, mainly inhalation and dermal. The objective of this study was to develop physiologically based human toxicokinetic (PBTK) models for trihalomethanes (THM) and trichloroethylene (TCE) that will facilitate (1) the estimation of internal exposure to these chemicals for various multimedia indoor exposure scenarios,

Relation of trihalomethane concentrations in public water supplies to stillbirth and birth weight in three water regions in England.

We investigated the association between total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and risk of stillbirth and low and very low birth weight in three water regions in England, 1992-1998; associations with individual trihalomethanes (THMs) were also examined. Modeled estimates of quarterly TTHM concentrations in water zones, categorized as low (< 30 microg/L), medium (30-59 microg/L), or high (> or = 60 microg/L), were linked to approximately 1 million routine birth and stillbirth records using maternal residence at time of birth. In one region, where there was a positive socioeconomic deprivation gradient a

Influence of exposure assessment methods on risk estimates in an epidemiologic study of total trihalomethane exposure and spontaneous abortion.

Trihalomethanes are common contaminants of chlorinated drinking water. Studies of their health effects have been hampered by exposure misclassification, due in part to limitations inherent in using utility sampling records. We used two exposure assessment methods, one based on utility-wide sampling averages, and one based on measurements from the utility sampling site closest to the subject's residence, to reestimate total trihalomethane (TTHM) exposure for 4212 participants in a preexisting study of risk factors for spontaneous abortion (SAB). For both approaches we performed unweighted, weig

Impact of seasonal variations and water quality parameters on the formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids in drinking water treatment processes.

In this study, the combined effects of seasonal variations and water treatment processes on the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), focusing on trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) within a full-scale conventional drinking water treatment plant, were investigated. The seasonal analysis revealed that autumn exhibited the highest levels of disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP), with trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) and halo acetic acid formation potential (HAAFP) reaching 255 μg/L and 241 μg/L, respectively, likely due to increased organic matter f

The association between blood trihalomethane concentrations and high risk for prostate cancer: A nationally representative cross-sectional study.

Trihalomethanes (THMs), a class of disinfection byproducts, have been implicated in various health risks. However, their association with prostate cancer (PCa) has not been systematically evaluated in biomarker-based studies. This cross-sectional study investigated associations between blood THMs exposure and both total prostate-specific antigen (tPSA) levels and high risk for PCa status using data from 2319 male participants (≥40 years) in the 2003-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles. Blood concentrations of bromoform (TBM), chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromet

Formation and speciation of hazardous trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids during chlorinated washing of brined kimchi cabbage in the presence of bromide.

Brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) may be generated in high concentrations during the chlorinated washing of brined kimchi cabbage (BKC) in kimchi manufacturing. However, the generation of these DBPs is not sufficiently understood. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the formation and speciation of the DBPs trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) during the chlorinated washing process. The average bromide content in 22 salt products sourced from various regions of Korea was 1600 ± 468 mg/kg. Increasing bromide content shifted the speciation of DBPs from chlorinated t

Impacts of powdered activated carbon addition on trihalomethane formation reactivity of dissolved organic matter in membrane bioreactor effluent.

Characteristics and trihalomethane (THM) formation reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in effluents from two membrane bioreactors (MBRs) with and without powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition (referred to as PAC/MBR and MBR, respectively) were examined to investigate the effects of PAC addition on THM formation of MBR effluent during chlorination. PAC addition increased the specific UV absorbance. Hydrophobic DOM especially hydrophobic acids in PAC/MBR effluent (50%) were more than MBR effluent (42%). DOM with molecular weight <1 kDa constituted 12% of PAC/MBR effluent DOM, which w

Long-term exposure to trihalomethanes in drinking water and risk of liver and kidney cancer: a population-based cohort study.

Chlorination of drinking water effectively prevents waterborne infections but also results in the formation of potentially carcinogenic disinfection by-products, including trihalomethanes (THMs). Experimental animal studies indicate that the liver and kidney are target organs for THM carcinogenicity, yet epidemiological evidence remains limited for these sites. In this study we assessed the association of long-term exposure to THMs in drinking water with incidence of liver and kidney cancer in two large Swedish population-based cohorts. We included 58,664 adults from the Swedish Infrastructure

Estimation and exposure concentration of trihalomethanes (THMs) and its human carcinogenic risk in supplied pipeline water of Dhaka City, Bangladesh.

Formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) through excessive chlorination in the supplied water and its carcinogenic nature is a public health concern in many parts of the world, including a couple of neighboring countries in Asia. However, the issue was not yet addressed either in the public health policy or in academia in Bangladesh. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to determine the THM concentration in supplied water, its multiple pathways to the human body, and an estimation of resultant carcinogenic risk to urban dwellers in six different regions of Dhaka city. Thirty-one supplied wat

Effects of four trihalomethanes on DNA strand breaks, renal hyaline droplet formation and serum testosterone in male F-344 rats.

All four possible trihalomethanes (THMs) containing bromine and chlorine, as well as perchloroethylene (PCE), were evaluated for their ability to produce DNA strand breaks, alpha 2u-globulin rich renal deposits, and testosterone changes in male F-344 rats. Rats received daily equimolar doses (0.75 or 1.5 mmol/kg) of THMs or PCE (1000 mg/kg) in 4% Emulphor vehicle by oral gavage for 7 days. No significant DNA strand breaks were produced by any THM or PCE treatment. PCE treatment produced increased hyaline droplet formation in renal tubules. However, all THM treatments reduced or eliminated the

Trihalomethane exposure and biomonitoring for the liver injury indicator, alanine aminotransferase, in the United States population (NHANES 1999-2006).

Exposure to trihalomethanes (or THMs: chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and dibromochloromethane [DBCM]) formed via drinking water disinfection has been associated with adverse reproductive outcomes and cancers of the digestive or genitourinary organs. However, few studies have examined potential associations between THMs and liver injury in humans, even though experimental studies suggest that these agents exert hepatotoxic effects, particularly among obese individuals. This study examined participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2006, N=2781) to t

Exposure to drinking water trihalomethanes and their association with low birth weight and small for gestational age in genetically susceptible women.

Little is known about genetic susceptibility to individual trihalomethanes (THM) in relation to adverse pregnancy outcomes. We conducted a nested case-control study of 682 pregnant women in Kaunas (Lithuania) and, using individual information on drinking water, ingestion, showering and bathing, and uptake factors of THMs in blood, estimated an internal THM dose. We used logistic regression to evaluate the relationship between internal THM dose, birth outcomes and individual and joint (modifying) effects of metabolic gene polymorphisms. THM exposure during entire pregnancy and specific trimeste
