Measles Outbreak in a Roma Community in the Eastern Region of Slovakia, May to October 2018.

BACKGROUND: Despite the effective National Immunization Programme of Slovakia, some population groups are incompletely vaccinated or unvaccinated. We aimed to describe the measles outbreak spread in Eastern Slovakia between May and October 2018, affecting the Roma communities in relation to the existing immunity gaps. METHODS: We defined a group of persons living in socially closed communities with low vaccination coverage. RESULTS: Of 439 measles cases (median age: 10 years), 264 (60.1%) were vaccinated, 137 (31.2%) received two doses and 127 (28.9%) one dose of measles vaccines, 155 (35.3%

Safety of hepatitis E vaccine in pregnancy: an emulated target trial following a mass reactive vaccination campaign in Bentiu internally displaced persons camp, South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Epidemic forms of hepatitis E cause high mortality among pregnant people, with case fatality risks over 30% and adverse fetal outcomes. In 2022, the first mass reactive vaccination campaign against hepatitis E was conducted in South Sudan with the HEV239 vaccine. We aimed to assess whether vaccination against hepatitis E in pregnancy increases the risk of fetal loss in a cohort of vaccinated and unvaccinated pregnant people. METHODS: In this emulated target trial, an exhaustive pregnancy census was conducted in Bentiu internally displaced persons camp after the second of three vac

Incidence of Herpes Zoster Among Children: 2003-2014.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: After the 1996 introduction of routine varicella vaccination in the United States, most studies evaluating pediatric herpes zoster (HZ) incidence reported lower incidence over time, with varying degrees of decline. Using the combined databases of 6 integrated health care organizations, we examined HZ incidence in children over a 12-year period in the varicella vaccine era. METHODS: This study included children aged 0 through 17 years from 2003 through 2014. Using electronic medical records, we identified HZ cases through International Classification of Diseases, Nin

Magnitude and Determinants of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Household Transmission: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Households have emerged as important venues for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission. Little is known, however, regarding the magnitude and determinants of household transmission in increasingly vaccinated populations. METHODS: From September 2020 to January 2022, symptomatic nonhospitalized individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection by RNA detection were identified within 5 days of symptom onset; all individuals resided with at least 1 other SARS-CoV-2-uninfected household member. These infected persons (cases) and their household members (contacts

Human monkeypox: a study of 2,510 contacts of 214 patients.

A study of 2,510 contacts of 214 patients with human monkeypox was conducted in Zaire from 1980 to 1984. Among the contacts of 130 primary cases of human monkeypox, a further 22 co-primary and 62 secondary cases were detected, and an additional fourteen people who had no evidence of clinical disease had positive serological results. A majority of the clinical and subclinical cases of monkeypox occurred in children less than 10 years of age. Immunity in vaccinated persons now appears to be waning because 16 overt cases occurred in contacts who had been vaccinated. The overall attack rate for co

Outbreak of poliomyelitis--Dominican Republic and Haiti, 2000.

During July 12-November 18, 2000, 19 persons with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) were identified in the Dominican Republic, including six laboratory-confirmed cases with poliovirus type 1 isolates. Of the 19 case-patients, 16 (84%) were aged < or = 6 years (range: 9 months-21 years). All case-patients were either unvaccinated (n=14) or inadequately vaccinated (n=5). In Haiti, a single laboratory-confirmed poliovirus type 1 case was reported in an inadequately vaccinated child aged 2 years; paralysis onset was August 30. Despite intensive case-finding activities, no additional cases have been id

Monkeypox Virus Infections After 2 Preexposure Doses of JYNNEOS Vaccine - United States, May 2022-May 2024.

Two doses of JYNNEOS vaccine are effective in preventing many mpox cases and can reduce the severity of symptoms in infected persons. However, infections among fully vaccinated persons can occur. During May 2022-May 2024, a total of 271 mpox cases among fully vaccinated persons were reported to CDC from 27 U.S. jurisdictions. These reported infections are estimated to have occurred in <1% of fully vaccinated persons. Compared with cases among unvaccinated persons, infections among fully vaccinated persons were more likely to occur among non-Hispanic White men aged 30-39 years, were associated

Short- and longer-term all-cause mortality among SARS-CoV-2- infected individuals and the pull-forward phenomenon in Qatar: a national cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed short-, medium-, and long-term all-cause mortality risks after a primary SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: A national, matched, retrospective cohort study was conducted in Qatar to assess risk of all-cause mortality in the national SARS-CoV-2 primary infection cohort compared with the national infection-naïve cohort. Associations were estimated using Cox proportional-hazards regression models. Analyses were stratified by vaccination status and clinical vulnerability status. RESULTS: Among unvaccinated persons, within 90 days after primary infection, the adjusted hazard r

A Measles Outbreak in an Underimmunized Amish Community in Ohio.

BACKGROUND: Although measles was eliminated in the United States in 2000, importations of the virus continue to cause outbreaks. We describe the epidemiologic features of an outbreak of measles that originated from two unvaccinated Amish men in whom measles was incubating at the time of their return to the United States from the Philippines and explore the effect of public health responses on limiting the spread of measles. METHODS: We performed descriptive analyses of data on demographic characteristics, clinical and laboratory evaluations, and vaccination coverage. RESULTS: From March 24,

Orthopoxvirus Seroprevalence and Infection Susceptibility in France, Bolivia, Laos, and Mali.

To determine a demographic overview of orthopoxvirus seroprevalence, we tested blood samples collected during 2003-2019 from France (n = 4,876), Bolivia (n = 601), Laos (n = 657), and Mali (n = 255) for neutralizing antibodies against vaccinia virus. In addition, we tested 4,448 of the 4,876 samples from France for neutralizing antibodies against cowpox virus. We confirmed extensive cross-immunity between the 2 viruses. Seroprevalence of antibodies was <1% in Bolivia, <5% in Laos, and 17.25% in Mali. In France, we found low prevalence of neutralizing antibodies in persons who were unvaccinated
