Ureteroscopy via the transurethral route and limited to the terminal ureter in women lends itself to inclusion in the urological armamentarium. The technique requires no equipment other than routine urological instruments and makes endoscopic inspection, biopsy and resection within the distal ureter possible. The procedure is done with the patient under anesthesia, following urethral dilation to 32F. With the aid of a small caliber cystoscope, 20F or smaller, straight Jewett sounds can be passed into the urethra alongside the cystoscope and directed under cystoscopic control into the ureteral

OBJECTIVE: Kidney stones (renal calculi) are a prevalent medical condition, causing significant pain and discomfort to patients. The existing treatment options for kidney stones include extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and flexible ureteroscopy. It is crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment modalities, including flexible ureteroscopy, to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of flexible ureteroscopy in treating renal calculi and determine its value in managing this condition.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of emergency ureteroscopy (URS) compared with elective URS.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent URS for isolated ureteral stones in a single center from October 2001 to February 2014. Our patient cohort was divided into two groups: an emergency URS group (Group A), which consisted of patients who underwent URS within the first 24 h of admission, and an elective or planned URS group (Group B). The URS success rate was defined as being the incidence of successful stone fragmentation and whether there was resolutio

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is uncommon accounting for less than 10% of all urothelial tumours. Ureteroscopic management (URS) is the first line treatment for low-risk disease and has been increasingly utilised due to technological advances and increasing surgical experience. This review looks at patient outcomes relating to URS, emerging technologies and the role of adjuvant intracavitary therapy in the management of UTUC.
RECENT FINDINGS: URS has firmly established itself in the management algorithm for UTUC, and a good body of evidence supports its use for lo

We present a case of a 45-year-old female who experienced rupture of a right calyceal diverticulum caused by ureteroscopy. Fifteen hours after the operation, she had severe right flank pain and a high fever (38.9°C). Computed tomography revealed perinephric extravasation of urine and bleeding inside the diverticulum. We diagnosed rupture of a calyceal diverticulum; therefore, we continued antibiotic administration and pain relief medication. She became afebrile on postoperative day 4 and was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 7. Owing to renal cortex thinning in the diverticula,

Transurethral lithotripsy (TUL) is a common procedure in urology. However, controversy persists about how to deal with stones pushed up into kidney from the ureter during the procedure of TUL. This study investigated the efficacy of combining flexible ureteroscopy and rigid ureteroscopy for pushed-up stones into kidney during TUL. Fotry-one patients underwent TUL by a single surgeon from July 2007 to May 2009. Eight cases resulted in pushed-up stones during operation or involved existing kidney stones. We used a Zero-tip or Litho Catch Basket catheter and a flexible ureteroscope to carry these

INTRODUCTION: Ureteroscopic stone manipulation and extraction is the standard of care for distal stone disease in the adult population. Recently, with refinements in instrumentation, these standards have been applied in pediatrics. Here, we investigate the role of ureteral dilation and the need for postoperative stenting after ureteroscopy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine children (21 male, eight female) with a mean age of 11.0 (2.5-17.5) years underwent 34 ureterscopic procedures (21 right, 13 left) to address ureteral stones in 27 (23 distal, 3 mid and 1 proximal), surveillance of the up

OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety and efficacy of ureteroscopy and holmium laser in patients with known bleeding diatheses and upper tract calculi or transitional cell carcinoma (TCC).
METHODS: Eight patients with stone disease and 1 patient with upper tract TCC were treated ureteroscopically with the holmium laser. The mean age was 58.3 years (range 42 to 74). Six patients were receiving Coumadin, with a mean international normalized ratio (INR) of 2.1 (normal INR less than 1.1). Two patients were thrombocytopenic, and 1 had von Willebrand's disease. None of the bleeding diatheses were correc

Two therapies, ureterolithotripsy (URL) and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) can be used in the treatment of lower ureteral calculi. In a retrospective analysis ureterolithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for lower ureteral calculi were compared to evaluate morbidity. During a 3 year period 161 patients treated with ureterolithotripsy and 71 who underwent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (Siemens Lithostar) were analysed as to the success rate, effectiveness quotient, complication rate and length of hospitalization. Followup consisted of ultrasound and a plain

PURPOSE: To investigate the outcome and cost-effectiveness of ultrathin 6-7.5-Fr semirigid ureteroscopy in treating proximal ureteric stones compared to flexible ureteroscopy.
METHODS: Two hundred and twenty patients with a solitary proximal ureteric stone were eligible for ureteroscopy (stone size = 1-2 cm). Patients were randomly subdivided into two groups: Group I included 105 patients who underwent ultrathin semirigid ureteroscopy and group II included 115 patients who underwent flexible ureteroscopy. Both groups were compared regarding successful stone access, operation time, reoperation

INTRODUCTION: Ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy is a common treatment option for upper urinary tract calculi. Currently, ureteral stents are placed after uncomplicated ureteroscopy for up to 1 week, but the optimal length of placement is not well defined. Ureteral stents are associated with significant morbidity, particularly stent discomfort. This study aims to determine differences in postoperative unplanned clinic or ED visits based on duration of stent placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a single-institution, IRB-approved, retrospective cohort study of 559 ureteroscopy cases with l

INTRODUCTION: Shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy are considered first line treatment options for patients with urolithiasis. However, these interventions have significant variation in rates of stone-free success, procedure related complications and need for reoperation. We examined patient preferences in treatment selection for urolithiasis and factors associated with choice of treatment.
METHODS: Patients with a history of urolithiasis were self-administered or mailed a questionnaire with a clinical scenario of a stone in the ureter and outcome statistics derived from a Cochrane Review

INTRODUCTION: We previously described ureteroscopy assisted retrograde nephrostomy (UARN). In UARN, it is possible to continuously visualize the dilation of the ureter from puncture to insertion of the nephroaccess sheath with minimal complication. But in the course of making nephrostomy, UARN requires ureteral access sheath (UAS). UAS has a potential risk of ureteral stricture. Herein, we report the first case of UARN without the use of UAS.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 53-year-old female was referred to our hospital for treatment of her right renal stone. Because her stone burden was 27mm, we pl

BACKGROUND: Over time, the prone position has been shown to be effective and safe for performing percutaneous nephrolithotomy. One of its disadvantages, however, is the inability to simultaneously perform an ureteroscopy after positioning the patient, which is feasible in the supine position. Our objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of implementing flexible ureteroscopy with the patient in the prone position.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a case of percutaneous nephrolithotomy of partial staghorn calculi in the prone position during which access to the middle calyx was not possible.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Upper tract transitional-cell carcinoma (utTCC) is uncommon. Standard evaluation includes imaging, cytology, and cystoscopy and gold standard treatment is nephroureterectomy (NU) with solid oncologic outcomes and elevated morbidity. In this study, we report on the value of including routine ureteroscopy (URS) for evaluating suspected utTCC in shifting the treatment toward less morbid options and increasing preoperative diagnostic accuracy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of patients presenting between 2002 and 2013 with suspected utTCC were reviewed. Since 2010, URS has
