The stones removed from 273 patients (220 males, 53 females) with bladder stones and 27 patients with urethral stones (males) were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. Of these stones 50.0% contained magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP), 39.9% calcium (oxalate and/or phosphate), 9.4% uric acid (urate), and 0.7% cystine. The disorders associated with bladder stones were prostatic hyperplasia and cancer (47.8%), neurogenic bladder (11.8%), urethral stricture (3.6%) and so on in males, and neurogenic bladder (48.1%), after operation of uterus (29.0%), bladder cancer (5.7%) and so on in females. Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) remains a formidable challenge to pediatric urologists to achieve the goals of renal preservation and the reduction of urinary tract infections as well as the attainment of continence and independence as children grow toward adulthood. Tremendous progress has occurred over the past 50 years which have witnessed an evolution in focus from mere survival to optimal quality of life. This review presents four separate guidelines for the medical and surgical care of pediatric NLUTD, most commonly related to spina bifida, to highlight the change in a

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections. The clinical phenotypes of UTIs are heterogeneous, ranging from rather benign uncomplicated infections to complicated UTIs and pyelonephritis to severe urosepsis. There has been a sharp increase in the incidence of severe UTIs, whilst the incidence of sepsis in general is declining. The classifications of UTIs partially differ between clinical and regulatory claims. Experience has also been gained over the last few years to define the appropriate endpoints that are used in clinical studies. Above all, patient-cente

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common infection among pregnant women and have been associated with maternal and foetal complications. Antimicrobial exposure during pregnancy is not without risk. International guidelines recommend a single screen-and-treat approach to asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB); however, this approach has been questioned by recent studies.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this narrative review was to assess the pathophysiology, current risk factors and management of UTI during pregnancy, its impact on pregnancy outcomes, and to develop recommendations on th

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) remains one of the most prevalent, but preventable, health care-associated infections and predominantly occurs in patients with indwelling urinary catheters. Duration of urinary catheterization is the most important modifiable risk factor for development of CAUTI. Alternatives to indwelling catheters should be considered in appropriate patients. If indwelling catheterization is necessary, proper aseptic practices for catheter insertion and maintenance and use of a closed catheter collection system are essential for preventing CAUTI. The use o

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children are among the most common bacterial infections in childhood. They are equally common in boys and girls during the first year of life and become more common in girls after the first year of life. Dividing UTIs into three categories; febrile upper UTI (acute pyelonephritis), lower UTI (cystitis), and asymptomatic bacteriuria, is useful for numerous reasons, mainly because it helps to understand the pathophysiology of the infection. A single episode of febrile UTI is often caused by a virulent Escherichia coli strain, whereas recurrent infections and as

Lower urinary tract reconstruction has traditionally been approached in an open fashion but select complications or disease processes may be suitable for robotic reconstruction, including bladder neck contractures, proximal urethral strictures, and genitourinary fistulas. Here, the authors discuss the novel techniques used and the feasibility of robotic reconstruction for these conditions. The robotic approach is relatively novel, and more data and studies will be required to make definitive statements regarding success rate and complications from the procedure. Preliminary data suggest that t

Urinary tract infection in children. The care of a child suspected of urinary infection (UI) goes through 4 stages. The diagnosis of UI is based on the presence of bacteriuria > 105 / mL, the collection of urine through a bas is unreliable and source of false positives. Localization diagnosis (acute pyelonephritis or cystitis) is based on clinical and biological signs (leukocytosis and inflammation). Etiological diagnosis is based on renal ultrasonography looking for obstructive uropathy, stones and bladder dysfunction; the search for a vesico-ureteral reflux with retrograd cystography is not

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the commonest nosocomial infection worldwide. Here we review the recent advances in the prevention of CAUTI.
RECENT FINDINGS: After more than 30 years, new guidelines were issued in 2008-2011 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee and European Association of Urology. These guidelines addressed novel technologies such as silver alloy or antimicrobial coatings on catheters, hydrophilic catheters, urethral sten

Candida species are unusual causes of urinary tract infection (UTI) in healthy individuals, but common in the hospital setting or among patients with predisposing diseases and structural abnormalities of the kidney and collecting system. The urinary tract may be invaded in either an antegrade fashion from the bloodstream or retrograde via the urethra and bladder. Candida species employ a repertoire of virulence factors, including phenotypic switching, dimorphism, galvano - and thigmotropism, and hydrolytic enzymes, to colonize and then invade the urinary tract. Antegrade infection occurs prima

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is relatively frequent in children. The younger the child is, the more symptoms are atypical. UTI is often associated with functional or malformative uropathy, such as vesico-ureteral reflux or obstruction. Appropriate imaging studies should be carried out in every infected child. The prognosis of uncomplicated UTI is very good, but is less favorable when the UTI is associated with urological abnormalities. Development of pyelonephritic scars can lead to kidney scarring, for which the occurrence of intrarenal reflux is probably responsible . Short-term treatment i

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common infection experienced by humans after respiratory and gastro-intestinal infections, and also the most common cause of both community-acquired and nosocomial infections for patients admitted to hospitals. For better management and prognosis, it is mandatory to know the possible site of infection, whether the infection is uncomplicated or complicated, re-infection or relapse, or treatment failure and its pathogenesis and risk factors. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is common in certain age groups and has different connotations. It needs to be treated an

QUESTION: My pregnant patients often present with urinary tract infections. Are the medications commonly used for the management of urinary tract infections safe to use during pregnancy?
ANSWER: Existing data indicate that exposure to penicillins, cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, nitrofurantoin, or phenazopyridine during pregnancy is not associated with increased risk of fetal malformations. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole should be avoided, if possible, during the first trimester of pregnancy because of the antifolate effect associated with neural tube defects.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are an increasingly prevalent problem for women. The diagnosis and management of uncomplicated acute cystitis is relatively straightforward, while complicated and recurrent infections require more specialized assessment and treatment. This article will review the current management of UTIs.

Lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common among the general population and are most often caused by bacterial pathogens. Viruses are an uncommon cause of UTIs in an immunocompetent host; however, viruses are increasingly recognized as the cause of lower UTI, especially hemorrhagic cystitis, among immunocompromised patients. BK virus, adenovirus, and cytomegalovirus are predominant pathogens involved in hemorrhagic cystitis after stem cell and solid organ transplantation, and their early diagnosis and treatment may prevent significant morbidity of hemorrhagic cystitis. The diagnosis of v
