Small-target random dot stereogram and binocular suppression testing for preschool vision screening.

BACKGROUND: New, small-target (< 1 degree) random dot stereogram (STRDS) and binocular suppression (STBS) tests appropriate for preschool vision screening were developed to correct the shortcomings of previous such tests, particularly missed cases of anisometropic amblyopia such as found with some RDS-based testing. METHODS: In Experiment 1, the tests were administered to 14 patients with current or a recent history of moderate (< or = 20/60) anisometropic amblyopia, or with accommodative esotropia or monofixation syndrome. All subjects had good binocularity (< or = 100" contour stereoacuity)

On the transfer learning behavior of domain-specific vision-language models in screening mammography.

Vision-Language models have shown remarkable performance for natural images and text. Given the homology of the anatomy, high gray-scale image dimension, and the unbalanced datasets, the traditional VLMs do not adapt well to radiological applications. In this work, we empirically adapted image encoder trained within domain-specific VLMs to be applied in two downstream tasks for 2D mammogram image analysis: tissue density estimation and BI-RADS prediction. We study the transfer learning behavior using linear probing, fine-tuning, and online self distillation. We analyze that knowledge driven do

Embedded AI system for interactive vision screen based on human action recognition.

In recent years, vision screening has emerged globally for employment (on a yearly basis) within primary and high schools since myopia heavily affects school-aged children. However, this is a laborious and time-consuming task. This article proposes an intelligent system for "self-service" vision screening. Individuals can accomplish this task independently-without any assistance by technical staff. The technical solution involved within this platform is human action recognition realized by pose estimation (real-time human joint localization in images, including detection, association, and trac

AAPOS uniform guidelines for instrument-based pediatric vision screen validation 2021.

BACKGROUND: As instrument-based pediatric vision screening technology has evolved, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) has developed uniform guidelines (2003, updated 2013) to inform the development of devices that can detect specified target levels of amblyopia risk factors (ARFs) and visually significant refractive error. Clinical experience with the established guidelines has revealed an apparent high level of over-referral for non-amblyopic, symmetric astigmatism, prompting the current revision. METHODS: The revised guidelines reflect the expert con

Genetic disorders of vision revealed by a behavioral screen of 400 essential loci in zebrafish.

We examined optokinetic and optomotor responses of 450 zebrafish mutants, which were isolated previously based on defects in organ formation, tissue patterning, pigmentation, axon guidance, or other visible phenotypes. These strains carry single point mutations in >400 essential loci. We asked which fraction of the mutants develop blindness or other types of impairments specific to the visual system. Twelve mutants failed to respond in either one or both of our assays. Subsequent histological and electroretinographic analysis revealed unique deficits at various stages of the visual pathway, in

Visual Profile of Children who Passed or Failed the UK School Vision Screening Protocol.

BACKGROUND: We applied the National Screening Committee vision screening protocol [pass criterion monocular acuity ≤ 0.2 LogMAR in both eyes(BE)] to children four to five years old to investigate the visual profile of children who passed/failed. Previous studies have only evaluated those failing. The aim was to derive false positive and negative values, specificity/sensitivity of the vision screening protocol for detecting significant visual defects (strabismus and/or significant refractive error) and the utility of a 'plus blur test' in identifying hyperopia. METHODS: Participants included 2

[Ophthalmologic screening history and vision-targeted health status of patients suffering from chloroquine maculopathy].

BACKGROUND: Maculopathy or retinopathy can develop as a side effect of chloroquine intake. Despite recommendations for ophthalmologic screening by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) severe toxic retinal damage still occurs. This study aims to clarify how maculopathy affects patient quality of life and whether it arises only due to non-compliance with screening guidelines. METHODS: Patients suffering from chloroquine maculopathy were questioned about the ophthalmologic examinations that took place under therapy and completed a German version of the 25 item visual function questionnair

Infant vision screening predicts failures on motor and cognitive tests up to school age.

In a population-based infant vision screening programme, 5295 infants were screened and those with significant refractive errors were followed up. To assess the relationship between the development of vision and other domains, we report a longitudinal study comparing infants with significant hyperopia, identified at age 9 months ('hyperopes') with infants with normal refractions ('controls'). Children are included who completed at each age a broad set of visual, cognitive, motor and language measures taken over a series of follow-up visits up to age 5.5 years. Hyperopes performed significantly
