Leiomyomas of the uterus are the most common benign tumours of women in the reproductive age group, affecting up to 40%-50% of women older than 35. In postmenopausal women, the incidence is much lower with an estimated incidence of 1%-2% in women in the 60-80 years old age group. Vulvar leiomyomas are much rarer than their uterine counterparts, accounting for only 0.03% of all gynaecological neoplasms and 0.07% of all vulvar tumours. These tumours are well-circumscribed, painless, solitary growths that affect females of all ages. Given the presentation and rarity of vulvar leiomyomas, they are

Lymph node status is the most important prognostic factor in vulvar malignancy. The aim of this pilot study was to explore the clinical significance of radionuclide lymphoscintigraphy in the management of vulvar neoplasms. Eight patients with squamous cell carcinoma and two patients with malignant melanoma of the vulva were studied with 100 MBq technetium-99m nanocolloid (Sentiscint, OSSKI, Budapest) 1 day before surgery. The location of the sentinel lymph node was checked by a single-head gamma camera-computer system (MB 9200, Mediso, Budapest). Vulvectomy with bilateral inguinofemoral lympha

Here we report the first Korean case of a girl who developed noninvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva at the age of 16 years. She was taking tacrolimus, an immunosuppressive agent, after living-related liver transplantation. The vulvar masses were microscopically proved as vulvar intraepithelial neoplasm II and III, even squamous cell carcinoma in situ. Human papillomavirus subtypes (69 and 73) and human papillomavirus types (66, 70, 73, and 43) were detected in the vulvar mass and the cervicovaginal smear, respectively. The outcome of liver transplantation for children has been marked

Vulvar Paget's disease is an extremely rare neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of the vulvar malignancies. We present a case of a 75-year-old woman, who had an eczematoid lesion involving the labia majora and minora bilaterally, with infiltration to the clitoris. Enlarged non-fixed lymph nodes were palpable in the inguinal region bilaterally. A biopsy of the vulva showed Paget's disease. She underwent radical vulvectomy with bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection. The patient remained disease free at 6-month follow-up.

Primary vulvar angiosarcomas have a propensity for varied macroscopic and histologic appearance that initially may not suggest a vascular malignant neoplasm. Therefore, the rarity of the lesion and it's morphologic diversity may contribute to the high rate of misdiagnosis. We present the case of a 43-year old patient with a primary vulvar lesion, initially misdiagnosed as an angiofibroma. Microscopic examination of the recurrence together with immunohistochemical profile were in favor on a poorly differentiated angiosarcoma. Early diagnoses can improve prognoses in angiosarcomas and, in the ca

We aimed to investigate the prevalence and spectrum of unusual benign neoplasms and tumor-like lesions presenting as vulvar polyps and papules, to study their clinical, pathologic, hormonal, and developmental features and whether they have important associations with other pathologic lesions or clinical diseases. We conducted a retrospective review study of 115 vulvar specimens over 7 years. Common lesions, for example, fibroepithelial polyps, skin tags, papillomas, abscesses, viral warts and common cysts, were excluded. We found 21 cases (18%) with uncommon benign vulvar lesions. They include

BACKGROUND: Vulvar sarcomas are rare tumors. A distinctive low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma is described.
CASE: A 46-year-old female presented with a progressively enlarging vulvar mass. Pathological evaluation revealed a low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma. The immunophenotype is outlined and ultrastructural features are highlighted. Tumor cells were positive for p53 protein, smooth muscle actin, steroid receptors, and showed myofibroblastic differentiation on electron microscopy. The patient has been followed for >14 months without evidence of recurrence.
CONCLUSION: The tumor was positive

Sweat gland carcinomas constitute less than 10% of all malignant tumors of the vulva, including those associated with extramammary Paget's disease (EPD). The histopathologic diagnosis of vulvar sweat gland carcinomas is difficult because of their rarity; their resemblance to metastatic carcinomas of the internal female genitalia, kidneys, and other sites; and their diversity of microscopic appearances. We report five examples of vulvar sweat gland carcinomas, two of which were associated with EPD. The other tumors included one example each of ductal eccrine adenocarcinoma, eccrine porocarcinom

The etiologies of vulvar nodules range from infectious to neoplastic. Owing to the wide spectrum of vulvar diseases, clinical differentiation of the lesions is crucial for adequate diagnosis and management. A 46-year-old patient presented with a nodular lesion in the vulvar region that had been growing slowly for 10 years. Gynecological examination revealed the presence of a solid nodular lesion measuring approximately 3 cm in the middle third of the right labia majora without phlogistic signs or secretion discharge. The lesion was excised and an anatomopathological study revealed a nodular hi

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare fibroblastic neoplasm that may occur at various anatomic sites, whereas vulvar involvement is exceptional. The myxoid variant of SFT, defined by extensive myxoid stromal change, is exceedingly uncommon and may present diagnostic challenges due to atypical radiologic and histologic features. We report a case of a 35-yr-old woman with a slowly enlarging vulvar mass radiologically interpreted as a benign cystic lesion. Histologic examination revealed a predominantly myxoid spindle cell tumor with staghorn vascular features in its periphery. Immunohistochemis

A case of vulvar paraganglioma is reported. Following presentation with vulvar pain, a 1-cm nodule was excised from the labium minus of a 58-year-old woman. Histologically, the tumor was composed of nests of round eosinophilic cells with moderately pleomorphic nuclei, beneath an intact squamous epithelium. Ultrastructural studies indicated two cell types within the neoplasm: chief cells with numerous small neurosecretory granules and peripheral slender sustentacular cells. A reticulin stain confirmed the "zellballen" nature of the neoplasm, and the neoplastic cells showed moderate argyrophilia

Histologically, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasm (VIN) is a proliferative disorder of the female vulva. No single clinical characteristic or pathognomonic feature facilitates the diagnosis of VIN, and the agreement between different pathologists on the diagnoses varies significantly. In this study, we evaluate the immunohistochemical expression patterns of E-cadherin and β-catenin in 22 patients with VIN and 10 patients with non-neoplastic vulvar lesions. our results showed that membranous staining for E-cadherin and β-catenin was observed in squamous epithelial cells of all control non-neoplas

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) involving the vulva are rare. We report the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical findings of six cases of vulvar NHL. The age of the patients ranged from 43 to 71 years (mean 60 years), and 5 presented with a vulvar mass. Two patients had neoplasms localized to the vulva, and two patients had a history of NHL that secondarily involved the vulva; in another patient the stage was unknown, and the sixth patient had stage IVA mycosis fungoides/Sezary syndrome involving the vulva. Each tumor was classified according to the revised European-American classification

Currently, urogenital complaints are among the most common problems encountered by family practitioners, gynecologists, and dermatologists. In response to the intricacy of vulvar disorders, the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease was created to facilitate the exchange between clinicians and pathologists involved in the care of these patients. Recent classifications for inflammatory disorders and intraepithelial neoplasm have been proposed. In addition, vulvar skin biopsies are the most common source of intradepartmental consultation during dermatopathology sign-out. The

A case of vulvar adenocarcinoma seen in a 42-year-old woman is reported. The tumor involved the right labium majus and diffusely spread into the surrounding soft tissues as well as the inguinal lymph nodes and was histologically composed of nests, cords, and tubular formations recalling an aggressive duct carcinoma of breast. Likewise, tumor cells exhibited positivity for common breast tumor markers, such as epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen, and glandular keratins. The possible origin of the neoplasm from mammary ectopic tissue in vulva or from vulvar skin adnexa is briefl

BACKGROUND: Mammary-like gland adenocarcinoma of the vulva is a rare and aggressive form of vulvar cancer with histopathologic resemblance to breast cancer. This rare type of vulvar cancer develops from primary metaplasia of mammary-like anogenital glands, more recently discovered anatomic components of the anogenital region.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 77-year-old African-American female with a six-month history of painless, left lower vulvar lesion referred to our cancer center following confirmatory biopsy of invasive mammary type adenocarcinoma. Preoperative PET CT demonstrating focal

BACKGROUND: Vulvar ectopic breast fibroadenoma (EBF) is an exceptionally rare benign neoplasm that lacks distinctive clinical or radiological features rendering pre-operative differentiation from other vulvar masses challenging. Definitive diagnosis requires histopathological confirmation. Two non-exclusive histogenetic hypotheses have been proposed: (1) derivation from ectopic breast tissue along the embryonic "milk line," (2) origin from hormonally responsive anogenital mammary-like glands with latent potential for benign or malignant transformation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old woman p

INTRODUCTION: and Importance: Extra Mammary Paget's disease (EMPD) of the vulva, a rare postmenopausal entity, is responsible for less than 1% of all vulvar neoplasms. Invasive EMPD of the vulva with underlying squamous cell carcinoma is even rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old para 5 postmenopausal lady presented with a history of vulvar itching and a gradually progressive reddish lesion on genitals unresolved by topical therapies for one year. Vulvar biopsy confirmed the presence of pagetoid cells with a focus of squamous invasion.
DISCUSSION: The clinical presentation is often non-spec

Vulvar extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is an intraepithelial carcinoma not frequently seen in conjunction with other primary tumors. Nevertheless, we are presenting a collision between malignant nodular melanoma and EMPD in the vulva of a 78-year-old gravida 6, para 6 woman with a medical history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The patient presented with vulvar irritation and a pigmented vulvar mass; biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. Peripheral to the main mass, the vulva grossly seemed erythematous, and the perineum seemed white and thickened. Multiple radial biopsies w

Gynaecological malignancies contribute significantly to cancer burden and have a higher rate of mortality and morbidity. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the pattern of gynaecological malignancies identified between January, 2000 and December, 2011, at the Centre for Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy (CENAR). At CENAR 5,072 female patients were registered with different malignancies, of which 632 cases were gynaecological malignancies. Ovarian cancer (47%) was the most common gynaecological malignancy, followed by cervical cancer (29%), uterine cancer (14%), vulvar and vagi
