Effects of Walking Speed on Total and Regional Body Fat in Healthy Postmenopausal Women.

INTRODUCTION: This study had two aims: (1) To confirm the efficacy of exercise speed and impulse (session duration at a given speed) to produce total and abdominal fat loss in postmenopausal women, and (2) compare the exercise speed and impulse necessary for the stimulation of fat loss to the suppression of bone mineral loss. Of special interest was to compare these parameters of exercise on fat loss in the same study and with the same subjects where they were found to suppress bone mineral loss. We hypothesized that (1) more total fat will be lost with slow walking and a longer impulse than w

Quantitative Assessment of Ataxic Gait using Inertial Sensing at Different Walking Speeds.

In this study, we employed wearable sensor technology to identify the kinematic features that are associated with the gait abnormalities seen in cerebellar ataxia. Measurements were made at self-selected slow, preferred and fast walking speeds with three sensors attached to the participant's body. Velocity irregularity and resonant frequency characteristics were identified as key features of interest concerning truncal and lower limb movements. Using the principal component analysis, differentiating features of both trunk and lower limb movements were combined to produce an enhanced distinctio

Energy expenditure of transfemoral amputees during floor and treadmill walking with different speeds.

BACKGROUND: Walking energy expenditure, calculated as the percent utilization of the maximal aerobic capacity, is little investigated in transfemoral amputees. OBJECTIVES: Compare the energy expenditure of healthy participants (control participants) and transfemoral amputees walking with their respective preferred walking speeds on the treadmill (TPWS) and floor (FPWS). STUDY DESIGN: Randomized cross-over study. METHODS: Oxygen uptake (VO2) was measured when walking with the FPWS and TPWS. VO2max was measured by an incremental treadmill test. RESULTS: Mean ± standard deviation VO2max of th

Preliminary exploration of the measurement of walking speed for the apoplectic people based on UHF RFID.

The number of the apoplectic people is increasing while population aging is quickening its own pace. The precise measurement of walking speed is very important to the rehabilitation guidance of the apoplectic people. The precision of traditional measuring methods on speed such as stopwatch is relatively low, and high precision measurement instruments because of the high cost cannot be used widely. What's more, these methods have difficulty in measuring the walking speed of the apoplectic people accurately. UHF RFID tag has the advantages of small volume, low price, long reading distance etc, a

Adjustments in gait symmetry with walking speed in trans-femoral and trans-tibial amputees.

The effect of increased walking speed on temporal and loading asymmetry was investigated in highly active trans-femoral and trans-tibial amputees. With increasing walking speed, temporal gait variables reduced in duration, particularly on the prosthetic limb, while vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) increased in magnitude, particularly on the intact limb. Thus, temporal asymmetry reduced and loading asymmetry increased with walking speed. The greater force on the intact limb may reflect the method by which the amputees achieve greater temporal symmetry in order to walk fast, and could possi

A dynamical model of locomotion in spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy: influence of walking speed.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the capability of an escapement-driven inverted pendulum with springs and damping model to estimate the effects of impairments (e.g. spasticity, muscle weakness) on the dynamics and patterns of locomotion of children with spastic cerebral palsy. METHODS: Kinematic data of six children with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy and six matched, typically developing children were collected at five different self-selected overground walking speeds ('very slow' to 'very fast'). Changes in forcing, stiffness and gravitational potentials were estimat

Beyond Walking Speed: Estimating and Classifying Post-Stroke Gait Propulsion From Standardized Clinical Measures.

BACKGROUND: Gait propulsion (anterior ground reaction force) is commonly impaired after stroke. Force plates and wearable sensors can quantify propulsion but are not routinely available in clinical settings. Walking speed alone does not adequately capture the heterogeneity of propulsion deficits. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether standardized clinical measures can estimate post- stroke propulsion metrics and classify propulsion impairment. METHODS: Forty individuals post-stroke participated: 33 for model development and cross-validation (11 with repeated observations for longitudinal validatio

Self-paced treadmill speed differentially affects gait variability and stability in walking and running.

Self-paced treadmills allow individuals to continuously regulate belt speed and may more closely replicate overground locomotion than fixed-speed conditions. However, their effects on gait variability and stability, particularly during running, remain incompletely understood. This study compared self-paced (SFP) and constant-speed (CON) treadmill locomotion during walking and running at matched average speeds. Twenty-eight healthy adults completed SFP and CON walking and running trials. Spatiotemporal characteristics were assessed using mean values and coefficients of variation (CV) for stride

Age and self-selected walking speed impact the generalization of locomotor memories across contexts.

Previous work has shown that compared with young adults, older adults generalize their walking patterns more across environments that impose different motor demands (i.e., split-belt treadmill vs. overground). However, in this previous study, all participants walked at a speed that was more comfortable for older adults than young participants, which leads to the question of whether young adults would generalize more their walking patterns than older adults when exposed to faster speeds that are more comfortable for them. To address this question, we examined the interaction between healthy agi

Dual-task effects of walking-speed on inhibitory control and decision-making under risk.

The effect of simultaneously performing two tasks (dual-task effects, DTEs) has been extensively studied, mainly focusing on the combination of cognitive and motor tasks. Given their potentially detrimental impact on real-life activities, the impact of DTEs has been investigated in both healthy individuals and patients. In this Registered Report, we aimed to replicate previous DTEs when a task requiring executive-inhibitory skills is involved while also expanding the evidence on basic facets of decision-making. We recruited 50 healthy young participants who performed a stop-signal task and two

Balance and Walking Speed Outcomes in Individuals Receiving Inpatient Rehabilitation for Acute Cerebellar Stroke.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cerebellar strokes account for only 2-3% of all strokes occurring annually in the United States but represent a disproportionally higher share of morbidity and mortality. Evidence examining the effect of inpatient rehabilitation on functional outcomes following a cerebellar stroke is limited. This study aimed to examine the effects of inpatient rehabilitation on balance and walking speed in individuals with cerebellar stroke. A secondary purpose of this study was to examine the length of inpatient rehabilitation stay of the included patients. METHODS: A retrospective an

Slower Walking Speed Is Related to Early Femoral Trochlear Cartilage Degradation After ACL Reconstruction.

Post-traumatic patellofemoral osteoarthritis (OA) is prevalent after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and early cartilage degradation may be especially common in the femoral trochlear cartilage. Determining the presence of and factors associated with early femoral trochlear cartilage degradation, a precursor to OA, is a critical preliminary step in identifying those at risk for patellofemoral OA development and designing interventions to combat the disease. Early cartilage degradation can be detected using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging measures, such as tissue T2 rela

More than step counts: Slow walking speed, limited running, and fewer long walks predict cardiovascular mortality in the Walk Watch UK Biobank study.

BACKGROUND: Low daily step counts have traditionally been associated with cardiovascular death risk, suggesting other objective real-world gait measures may be complementary or better predictors. This study examined the relationship between real-world walking speed, quality, and walking bout distributions, measured using a wrist-worn device, and cardiovascular death in a large cohort of older people. METHODS: Participants aged 60 to 78 years from the UK Biobank who wore a wrist-worn device were included in this population-based observational cohort study. Gait data were analyzed using Watch W

Gait Function at 20 Years or More After Rotationplasty Shows Pseudo Knee Motion, Decreased Walking Speed, and Increased Energy Cost of Walking.

BACKGROUND: Rotationplasty is a surgical procedure primarily used for malignant bone tumors around the knee when conventional limb salvage is not feasible because of tumor extent or patient preference. The procedure repurposes the ankle to function as a pseudo knee. While early outcomes are generally good, long-term gait performance in adulthood has not been well described. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study addresses the following questions about patient outcomes 20 years or more after rotationplasty: (1) What are the walking speed and energy cost as well as the spatiotemporal and gait parameter

The interaction between muscle pathophysiology, body mass, walking speed and ankle foot orthosis stiffness on walking energy cost: a predictive simulation study.

BACKGROUND: The stiffness of a dorsal leaf AFO that minimizes walking energy cost in people with plantarflexor weakness varies between individuals. Using predictive simulations, we studied the effects of plantarflexor weakness, passive plantarflexor stiffness, body mass, and walking speed on the optimal AFO stiffness for energy cost reduction. METHODS: We employed a planar, nine degrees-of-freedom musculoskeletal model, in which for validation maximal strength of the plantar flexors was reduced by 80%. Walking simulations, driven by minimizing a comprehensive cost function of which energy cos

What percentage of neuromuscular strength reduction in older adults determines the decline in walking speed?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Although different neuromuscular strength (NS) cutoff points have been proposed to identify low walking speed (WS) in older adults, the extent to which NS changes predict long-term WS decline remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the percentage of NS change associated with WS decline in older adults. METHODS: A longitudinal analysis was conducted using data from 4,541 participants aged ≥ 60 years in the ELSA Study. Changes in NS over four, eight, and twelve years of follow-up, compared to baseline, were categorised into nine groups: maintenance of NS within ± 5%

The influence of shading facilities on outdoor thermal comfort, pedestrian walking speed, and indoor satisfaction.

As urban development increases, the use of air conditioning, industrial activities, and transportation makes human heat a major contributor to the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI). Common strategies to mitigate UHI include expanding water areas and green spaces, designing effective ventilation systems, and promoting energy-efficient buildings. In addition, shade structures have become a widely used thermal adaptation measure in outdoor environments. In this study, we investigated the walking speed and thermal comfort of pedestrians during the transition from outdoor to air-conditioned indoor spa
