Impact of water, sanitation, and hygiene indicators on enteric viral pathogens among under-5 children in low resource settings.

Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are the primary risks of exposure to enteric viral infection. Our study aimed to describe the role of WASH conditions and practices as risk factors for enteric viral infections in children under 5. Literature on the risk factors associated with all-cause diarrhea masks the taxa-specific drivers of diarrhea from specific pathogens, limiting the application of relevant control strategies. We analyzed data from children enrolled in the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) across seven study sites between December 2007 and March 2011 as cases (moderate

Coupling Coordination Degree Evaluation of Regional Water Resources, Social Economy and Ecological Environment Composite System Based on Logical Multiplication of Connection Numbers and Stochastic Simulations.

Traditional coupling coordination degree (CCD) evaluation methods fail to simultaneously ensure the accuracy and reliability of evaluation results. To overcome this limitation, a novel evaluation method that integrates the logical multiplication of connection numbers with stochastic simulations (ECCD-LMS) is developed to assess the CCD of regional water resources, social economy, and ecological environment (WSE) composite systems. The method adopts three-element connection numbers to quantify the comprehensive evaluation level of each system. Overall partial connection numbers and triangular f

Hydrological asymmetry and water stress in Peru: An integrated assessment of resource distribution, anthropogenic pressure, and governance gaps across three drainage basins.

BACKGROUND: Peru presents a paradigmatic case of hydrological asymmetry, where national water abundance (56,887 m 3/capita/year) masks acute regional scarcity. The Pacific basin, hosting 66.4% of the population, possesses only 1.9% of renewable water resources (1,628 m 3/capita/year), falling below the Falkenmark water stress threshold (1,700 m 3/capita/year). Conversely, the Amazon basin holds 97.8% of resources for 30.4% of the population (183,142 m 3/capita/year). This 112.5-fold asymmetry ratio exceeds comparable international cases (Egypt: 49.2; China: 8.0), yet Peru lacks systemic redist

Alcoholic-alkaline modification of millet starch as an emerging resource to develop granular cold water swelling properties: physicochemical, morphological and rheological insights.

In this study, granular cold water swelling (GCWS) millet starch was developed using alcoholic-alkaline treatment (AAT), applied at different temperatures, amounts and concentrations of sodium hydroxide and ethanol contents. Compared to the native starch, a significant enhancement in cold-water absorption (up to 10.40 g/g) and solubility (up to 14.11 %) was observed in GCWS starches. Morphological studies revealed smooth, polygonal and spherical granules in native starch, whereas GCWS starch granules exhibited wrinkled and indented surfaces. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the trans

Decarbonized and circular brine management/valorization for water & valuable resource recovery via minimal/zero liquid discharge (MLD/ZLD) strategies.

Brine (saline wastewater/water) from desalination, salt lakes, and industrial activities (e.g., pharmaceutical industries, oil & gas industries) has received a lot of attention around the world due to its adverse impact on the environment. Currently, several disposal methods have been applied; however, these methods are nowadays unsustainable. To tackle this problem, brine treatment and valorization is considered a promising strategy to eliminate brine discharge and recover valuable resources such as water, minerals, salts, metals, and energy. Brine valorization and resource recovery can be ac

Trilogy of comprehensive treatment of kitchen waste by bacteria-microalgae-fungi combined system: Pretreatment, water purification and resource utilization, and biomass harvesting.

Given its profound disservice, a bacteria-microalgae-fungi combined system was designed to treat kitchen waste. Firstly, a new type of microbial agent homemade compound microorganisms (HCM) (composed of Serratia marcescens, Bacillus subtilis and other 11 strains) with relatively high bio-security were developed for pretreating kitchen waste, and HCM efficiently degraded 85.2 % cellulose, 94.3 % starch, and 59.0 % oil. HCM also accomplished brilliantly the initial nutrients purification and liquefaction conversion of kitchen waste. Under mono-culture mode (fungi and microalgae were inoculated s

Co-liquefaction of triacetyl cellulose (TAC) from waste LCDs and high-sulfur low-rank coal (HSLC) by sub/supercritical water: Synergistic effect, desulfuration, and resource recovery.

To address the challenges of treatment of triacetyl cellulose (TAC) from waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and the upgrading demand for high-sulfur low-rank coal (HSLC), a novel synergistic co-liquefaction process was developed using a sub/supercritical water (Sub/SCW) system in this study, aiming to simultaneously achieve waste recovery and energy upgrading. The Sub/SCW co-liquefaction demonstrated efficient degradation of TAC (nearly 100 %) and synchronous conversion of HSLC (maximum conversion ratio of 76.69 %), exhibiting remarkable synergistic effects. By the Sub/SCW co-treatment, the

A comprehensive framework for the assessment of new end uses in recycled water schemes.

Nowadays, recycled water has provided sufficient flexibility to satisfy short-term freshwater needs and increase the reliability of long-term water supplies in many water scarce areas, which becomes an essential component of integrated water resources management. However, the current applications of recycled water are still quite limited that are mainly associated with non-potable purposes such as irrigation, industrial uses, toilet flushing and car washing. There is a large potential to exploit and develop new end uses of recycled water in both urban and rural areas. This can greatly contribu
