Acute toxicity and anti acetylcholinesterase potential of some biphenyl derivatives to non target species.

Five newly synthesised biphenyl derivatives were evaluated for their acute contact toxicity (LC50) against rice weevil and honey bee and anti acetylcholinesterase potential (I50) against honey bee, fish, pigeon and rat. Amongst, O,O-dimethyl-O, p-Nitro-biphenyl phosphate was most potent against rice weevil, whereas p-(4-Nitrophenyl) phenyl-N-methyl carbamate against honey bee. Based on I50 values the biphenyl derivatives of phosphoric acid esters were more potent anti acetylcholinesterase (AChE) agents against rat and fish brain AChE while derivative of carbamic esters towards pigeon brain ACh

Biochemical characterisation of α-amylase inhibitors from Achyranthes aspera and their interactions with digestive amylases of coleopteran and lepidopteran insects.

BACKGROUND: Starchy seeds are an important food and a source of dietary ingredients in many countries. However, they suffer from extensive predation by bruchids (weevils) and other pests. α-Amylase inhibitors are attractive candidates for the control of seed weevils, as these insects are highly dependent on starch as an energy source. RESULTS: A proteinaceous α-amylase inhibitor from the seeds of Achyranthes aspera was identified, purified and characterised. In electrophoretic analysis, two prominent amylase inhibitor activity bands (AI1 and AI2) were detected. The inhibitor was purified 9.99

Conspicuously hidden in the Catalogue-Phyllobius occultatus sp. nov. from Greece (Coleoptera, Curculionidae: Entiminae).

We here describe Phyllobius occultatus Germann, Wartmann & Winkelmann, a new species close to Phyllobius brenskei Schilsky, 1911 from Peloponnese, and Ph. nigrofasciatus Pesarini, 1975 from Turkey. A confusion of specimens attributed erroneously to Ph. brenskei led to the unawareness of the new species which had been photographed and known since its inclusion in the catalogue of Greek weevils.

Susceptibility and possible resistance mechanisms in the palm species Phoenix dactylifera, Chamaerops humilis and Washingtonia filifera against Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier, 1790) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, known as the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), is reported as a pest of up to 40 palm species. However, the susceptibility degree and the defense mechanisms of these species against this weevil are still poorly known. In Europe, the RPW is a major pest of Phoenix canariensis while other palm species, including the congeneric Phoenix dactylifera, seem to be less suitable hosts for this insect. The aim of our study was to compare the defensive response of P. dactylifera, Chamaerops humilis and Washingtonia filifera against R. ferrugineus and try to define the mechanisms of resist

Post-harvest treatments to reduce emergence and damage caused by larvae of Curculio sayi (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Damage caused by lesser chestnut weevil (Curculio sayi Gyllenhal) larval feeding affects yield and marketability of chestnuts (Castanea spp.) produced by commercial growers and hobbyists across the eastern United States. Post-harvest treatments to mitigate weevil damage involve submerging chestnuts in heated water for ≥20 min. Prolonged submergence in hot water, however, can discolor chestnuts or diminish quality of chestnuts in cold storage. We assessed larval emergence from chestnuts held at room temperature (controls), or submerged in water at 22.5°C (unheated), 43.3°C, 49.0°C, 54.4°C, or 6

Initial impacts and field validation of host range for Boreioglycaspis melaleucae Moore (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), a biological control agent of the invasive tree Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) Blake (Myrtales: Myrtaceae: Leptospermoideae).

Invasion of south Florida wetlands by the Australian paperbark tree, Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S.T. Blake (melaleuca), has caused adverse economic and environmental impacts. The tree's biological attributes and favorable ambient biophysical conditions combine to complicate efforts to restore and maintain south Florida ecosystems. Management requires an integrated strategy that deploys multiple biological control agents to forestall reinvasion and to supplement other control methods, thereby lessening recruitment and regeneration after removal of existing trees. This biological control pro

Observations on neurophysiological pattern and behavioural traits as death-feigning mechanism in Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

In adaptation to surrounding environmental stimuli, most insects exhibit defense behaviour (death feigning) to improve survival rates in the wild. However, the underlying mechanism of death feigning remains largely unknown. Here, we tested the neurophysiological pattern and behavioural traits of the death-feigning mechanism in the forestry pest Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus. Using neuroanatomy, LC-MS/MS target metabolomics detection technology and qRT-PCR, we investigated the effects of neurochemicals and metabolic pathways in experimental weevils. Excision and drug tests were conducted to v

Laboratory Evaluation of Contact and Feeding Deterrent Effects of Selected Essential Oils Against Different Life Stages of Cylas formicarius (Coleoptera: Brentidae).

The sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae), is one of the most destructive pests of sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] crops worldwide. Current management of the sweet potato weevil relies heavily on conventional pesticides, raising concerns about pesticide residues, environmental impacts, and the development of pesticide resistance. This study evaluated the effects of seven essential oils (EOs): eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), garlic (Allium sativum), marigold (Calendula officinalis), mustard seed (Sinapis alba), peppermint (Mentha piperita), rosema

Edible insects prevent changes to brain monoamine profiles from malnourishment in weaned rats.

Background: Childhood malnutrition can have devastating consequences on health, behavior, and cognition. Edible insects are sustainable low cost high protein and iron nutritious foods that can prevent malnutrition. However, it is unclear whether insect-based diets may help prevent changes to brain neurochemistry associated with malnutrition.Materials and Methods: Weanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were malnourished by feeding a low protein-iron diet (LPI, 5% protein and ∼2 ppm Fe) for 3 weeks or nourished by feeding a sufficient protein-iron diet (SPI, 15% protein 20 ppm FeSO4) for the duration

hRNAi-mediated knock-down of Sphenophorus levis V-ATPase E in transgenic sugarcane (Saccharum spp interspecific hybrid) affects the insect growth and survival.

Transgenic sugarcane expressing V-ATPase subunit E dsRNA affects growth and survival of Sphenophorus levis. Plants being sessile organisms are constantly confronted with several biotic and abiotic stresses. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp) is a major tropical crop widely cultivated for its sugar and other by-products. In Brazil, sugarcane plantations account for significant production losses due to Sphenophorus levis (sugarcane weevil) infestations. With the existing control measures being less effective, there arises a necessity for advanced strategies. Our bioassay injection experiments with V-ATPa

Immune system modulation & virus transmission during parasitism identified by multi-species transcriptomics of a declining insect biocontrol system.

BACKGROUND: The Argentine stem weevil (ASW, Listronotus bonariensis) is a significant pasture pest in Aotearoa New Zealand, primarily controlled by the parasitoid biocontrol agent Microctonus hyperodae. Despite providing effective control of ASW soon after release, M. hyperodae parasitism rates have since declined significantly, with ASW hypothesised to have evolved resistance to its biocontrol agent. While the parasitism arsenal of M. hyperodae has previously been investigated, revealing many venom components and an exogenous novel DNA virus Microctonus hyperodae filamentous virus (MhFV), the

Parasitic-Plant Parasite Rewires Flowering Pathways to Induce Stem-Derived Galls.

Gall-inducing insects manipulate host plant development, redirecting cellular fate and physiological processes to form novel structures. This phenomenon is even more intriguing when the host itself is a holoparasitic plant with minimal photosynthetic capacity. In the stem of Cuscuta campestris, the weevil Smicronyx madaranus forms galls that unexpectedly activate photosynthesis, in contrast to the typical suppression of photosynthetic activity observed in leaf-derived galls. This reversal of the usual source-to-sink transition highlights a unique form of insect-induced organogenesis. To elucid

Chemical composition and insecticidal potential of bioactive fractions from Brucea antidysenteric (abalo) stem bark extract against Sitophilus zeamais.

For pest control, the use of botanical insecticides can be an effective alternative to synthetic insecticides. The objective of this study is to analyze the chemical composition and evaluate the insecticidal potential of B. antidysenterica stem bark extract as a natural alternative for controlling maize weevils. A fractionated extract was obtained by macerating and soaking the stem bark powder in n-hexane (1.36 ± 0.81%), chloroform (1.26 ± 0.43%), ethyl acetate (1.03 ± 0.47%), acetone (2.24 ± 0.75%), ethanol (3.01 ± 0.26%), and methanol (2.1 ± 0.9). Acorn crop size and pre-dispersal predation determine inter-specific differences in the recruitment of co-occurring oaks.

The contribution of pre-dispersal seed predation to inter-specific differences in recruitment remains elusive. In species with no resistance mechanisms, differences in pre-dispersal predation may arise from differences in seed abundance (plant satiation) or in the ability of seeds to survive insect infestation (seed satiation). This study aimed to analyse the impact of pre-dispersal acorn predation by weevils in two co-occurring Mediterranean oaks (Quercus ilex and Quercus humilis) and to compare its relevance with other processes involved in recruitment. We monitored the patterns of acorn pro

Biology and host preferences of Cryptorhynchus melastomae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a possible biocontrol agent for Miconia calvescens (Melastomataceae) in Hawaii.

The introduced plant Miconia calvescens (Melastomataceae) poses a grave threat to Hawaii's native ecosystems and biodiversity. One potential candidate for classical biological control is Cryptorhynchus melastomae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cryptorhynchinae), a stem-boring weevil from Central and South America. This weevil feeds on M. calvescens in its native Costa Rica and has been successfully reared under greenhouse conditions. Comparison of its environmental conditions in Costa Rica with those in the Miconia infested areas of Hawaii indicates the latter is a suitable habitat for C. melasto

Phylogenetic characterization of Wolbachia symbionts infecting Cimex lectularius L. and Oeciacus vicarius Horvath (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

Wolbachia symbionts are obligate intracellular bacteria that cause host reproductive alterations in many arthropods and filarial nematodes. We identified Wolbachia symbionts in the cliff swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarious Horvath) and the human bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequencing using Wolbachia-specific 16S rDNA and FtsZ primers. Sex-biased seed predation in a gynodioecious species, Sidalcea campestris.

PREMISE: The coexistence of females and hermaphrodites, or gynodioecy, requires that females have a reproductive advantage over hermaphrodites in offspring quality and/or quantity. Female advantage can be mediated by a variety of ecological factors, including interactions with antagonists such as pre-dispersal seed predators. We compared differential rates of seed predation on hermaphrodites and females in Sidalcea campestris to assess the potential role of seed predators in gynodioecy maintenance. METHODS: We evaluated rates of seed predation in 28 populations of S. campestris, a gynodioecio
