The data available suggest that a disorder in the labyrinthine paired function can be regarded as a factor responsible for the initiation and development of space motion sickness. This concept is based on the assumption that in the norm the vestibular function is to a certain extent asymmetric which is made for by a compensatory center in the central nervous system. Exposure to an unusual space environment leads to a disorder of this compensation and development of a "new" vestibular asymmetry. This exposure involves: elimination of the difference in the weight of otolith membranes, disorder o

The results of biomedical investigations carried out in the U.S.S.R. manned space missions are discussed. Their basic result is well-documented evidence that man can perform space flights of long duration. The investigations have demonstrated no direct correlation between inflight or postflight physiological reactions of crewmembers and flight duration. In all likelihood, this can be attributed to the fact that special exercises done inflight efficiently prevented adverse effects of weightlessness. However, human reactions to weightlessness need further study. They include negative calcium bal

What is the central question of this study? The extent to which weightlessness associated with a fluid shift from the peripheral to the central circulation influences the blood flow in each cerebral artery remains unknown. The present study was designed to explore the effect of short-term weightlessness conditions on both anterior and posterior cerebral blood flow. What is the main finding and its importance? Short-term weightlessness affects both anterior and posterior cerebral vasculature. However, a heterogeneous cerebral blood flow response in each cerebral artery did not occur during 3 da

Lungs of 20 rats flown aboard Cosmos-936 for 18.5 days and sacrificed within 5-13 hours (8 weightless and 4 centrifuged rats) and 25 days (4 weightless and 4 centrifuged rats) after recovery were studied histologically. An identical number of lung specimens were withdrawn from rats of synchronous and vivarium controls. Lungs of the flight rats did not show any pathological changes or morphological signs of prolonged congestion, thus indicating the lack of hypertension in pulmonary circulation. Lungs of the flight rats exhibited an increased leukocyte count, which was more marked in the weightl

The adverse symptoms of space motion sickness (SMS) have remained problematic since the beginning of manned spaceflight. Despite over 50 yr of research SMS remains a problem that affects about half of all space travelers during the first 24-72 h of a spaceflight. SMS has been treated as another form of motion sickness (MS) despite distinct differences in symptomology. In this review SMS and MS differences are examined and documented based on available data. Vestibular biomechanics that occur during weightlessness coupled with theoretical assertions regarding human evolution have led us to prop

The paper discusses the problems to be resolved by space medicine and the main stages in the development of this branch of science, beginning with the vertical launches of rockets and ending with the flights of orbital stations. On the basis of ground-based simulation experiments and real space flights it presents a classification of the major symptomocomplexes that may occur inflight. The paper describes the main stages of adaptation to weightlessness and physiological changes in the weightless state. The paper also outlines further pathways in the development of space medicine.

It has been known for many years that weightlessness induces changes in numerous physiological systems: the cardiovascular system declines in both aerobic capacity and orthostatic tolerance; there is a reduction in fluid and electrolyte balance, hematocrit, and certain immune parameters; bone and muscle mass and strength are reduced; various neurological responses include space motion sickness and posture and gate alterations. These responses are caused by the hypokinesia of weightlessness, the cephalic fluid shift, the unloading of the vestibular system, stress, and the altered temporal envir

The main purpose of the present investigation was to reproduce some physiological reactions in the sensory system which are similar to those observed during the first day of the adaptation to weightlessness. This was achieved by a 5-day bed rest experiment during which the test subjects were kept in the antiorthostatic position at angles of 0 degrees, -4 degrees, -8 degrees, -12 degrees. Our investigations allowed simulation of the acute stage of adaptation to weightlessness and assessment of gravity-induced blood redistribution in the development of the above physiological reactions.

Dynamics of morphological changes of the rat adrenals was investigated on the first day and 25--27 days after a prolonged exposure to weightlessness. Analysing the general histological picture of the adrenal cortex during the first hours of the flight (presence of a subglomerular sudanophilic layer and distinct zones in other cortical parts), it is possible to conclude that by the completion of the flight the cortical substance has reached a definite degree of normalization, hence the animals have adopted to the flight conditions. Morphological signs of elevated functional cortical activity 9-

The review contains data on functional shifts in fishes, amphibians and birds caused by changes in the otolith system operation after stay under weightlessness conditions. These data are of theoretical and practical significance and are important to resolve some fundamental problems of vestibulogy. The analysis of the results of space experiments has shown that weightlessness conditions do not exert a substantial impact on formation and functional state of the otolith system in embryonic fishes, amphibians and birds developed during space flight. Weightlessness conditions do pot inhibit embryo

This chapter summarized the information available on the pharmacological kits onboard spacecraft and on the use of drugs in space, while the next chapter is dedicated to the impacts of weightlessness on drug pharmacokinetics. The need of a selected group of drugs for the use of astronauts during short-term and long-term spaceflights has been discussed. Recommendations are made for a Space Pharmacopoeia as well as for the areas of research needed to adapt medication to the weightlessness of the space environment. Although the usefulness of these drugs has been clearly demonstrated, their use al

An analysis of observations and investigations carried out in space flight has shown that some cosmonauts and astronauts have experienced vestibular disorders during the transition to weightlessness. Vestibular-sensory disorders include: Spatial illusions (the feelings of falling down, being in an upside-down position, the sensations of rotation of the craft or the body) and vertigo occurring during the onset of the orbital flight and head movements; Feelings, similar to those experienced in response to Coriolis accelerations on the Earth, which occasionally develop in weightlessness during th

Some considerations on the mechanisms of vestibulo-vegetative disturbance in space flight are given on the basis of clinical observations, experience of otoneurological clinic, simulation experiments and examinations of cosmonauts. The starting point in these disturbances was a significant fact of blood redistribution in weightlessness and subsequent changes in hemodynamics, metabolism, etc. The body reactions to weightlessness seem to prepare pronounced vestibulo-vegetative reflexes to threshold and subthreshold vestibular stimuli induced by head and body movements in flight. Some aspects of

Prolonged exposure to an inappropriate vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) will usually lead to motion sickness, and it has been predicted on theoretical grounds that VOR gain may be decreased in weightlessness. While experiments during parabolic flight in aircraft tend to confirm this prediction, experiments during orbital spaceflight have led to apparently contradictory results. It is suggested that VOR gain is reduced initially, but that rapid compensatory mechanisms restore it to normal within minutes of reaching weightlessness. However, even though this process may lead to the rapid return of f

After orbital space flights lasting 19.5--22.5 days, disturbances are observed in mineral metabolism in rats, which are morphologically manifested as osteoporosis of the spongy sections of long hollow skeletal bones, periosteocytic osteolysis of them, atrophy and dystrophy of skeletal muscles, and inhibition of erythroid growth of bone marrow, which occurred and developed in weightlessness as a result of deprivation of motor activity due to removal (or reduction) of static load from the musculoskeletal system. Development of stress reaction, which is apparently intensified at certain stages of

Various physiological countermeasures, consisting primarily of isotonic and isometric exercises but also including prescribed nutrient intake, have been used in all manned spaceflights exceeding about one month in duration. So consistent has been this practice that the effects of weightlessness on the human, unconfounded by the use of countermeasures, are difficult to discern. Equally elusive, in the absence of control studies conducted in weightlessness, is an accurate assessment of the efficacy of the countermeasures themselves. Changes in body composition occurring during and following flig

OBJECTIVE: Muscleatrophy reduces the quality of life and increases morbidity and mortality from other diseases. The development of non-invasive muscle atrophy evaluation method is of great practical value. The lack of gold standard for pathological grading usually allows only the duration of weightlessness as a criterion for the degree of atrophy. However, the adaptive reductive remodeling of muscle physiology and structure shows a trend of nonlinear changes in time. Consequently, using weightlessness time as a benchmark for the degree of atrophy is inaccurate.
METHODS: This paper proposes a
