How Do COVID-19 Vaccine Policies Affect the Young Working Class in the Philippines?

Dubbed the "inequality virus", coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has unveiled and magnified many of the global society's long-standing inequalities and health inequities. This work brings together the phenomena of increased inequality and health inequities felt by the poor and young working class of the Philippines and how they interact negatively with existing vaccine policies. The poor and the young were more likely to have experienced employment disruptions with limited access to technologies that allowed for teleworking. Informal economy workers suffered from diminished labor protection and d

The enigma of dyslexic musicians.

Musicians are known to have exceptional sensitivity to sounds, whereas poor phonological representations (or access to these representations) are considered a main characteristic of dyslexic individuals. Though these two characteristics refer to different abilities that are related to non-verbal and verbal skills respectively, the recent literature suggests that they are tightly related. However, there are informal reports of dyslexic musicians. To better understand this enigma, two groups of musicians were recruited, with and without a history of reading difficulties. The pattern of reading d

Malaria treatment-seeking behaviour and its associated factors: A cross-sectional study in rural East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization recommends seeking medical treatment within 24 hours after transmission of malaria to reduce the risk of severe complications and its onwards spread. However, in some parts of Indonesia, including East Nusa Tenggara Province (ENTP), this adherence is not achieved for a range of reasons including delays in visiting health centres. This study aims to determine factors related to the poor understanding of appropriate malaria treatment-seeking behaviour (AMTSB) of rural adults in ENTP. AMTSB was defined as seeking treatment at professional health facilit

Impact of sustained attention and working memory on toothbrushing efficacy in typically developing children: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Toothbrushing in children depends on factors such as toothbrushing duration, frequency, technique, manual dexterity, and cognitive skills. Higher level of cognitive functions, known as executive functions, is required for effective toothbrushing. These include sustained attention and working memory. Poor oral hygiene and higher prevalence of dental caries are seen in children with neurodevelopmental disorders due to impairment of cognitive skills. AIM: The study aimed to assess the impact of sustained attention and working memory on toothbrushing efficacy in 9-12-year-old typicall

Transoral approach to type 1 laryngeal cleft repair: A novel, non-endoscopic technique.

Endoscopic type 1 laryngeal cleft repair under spontaneous ventilation can be difficult in patients with poor pulmonary reserve. Intubation makes visualization of the interarytenoid area challenging during an endoscopic repair. As an alternative technique, we utilized a transoral, non-endoscopic approach with a McIvor mouth gag in two such patients. This provided adequate visualization and a larger working field with readily available instrumentation. The ability to intubate the patient obviated the need to intermittently place an endotracheal tube and allowed for uninterrupted working time. T

Profiling the Word Reading Abilities of School-Age Children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Reading difficulties are one of the most significant challenges for children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The aims of this study were to identify and categorize the types of reading impairments experienced by children with NF1 and to establish predictors of poor reading in this population. METHOD: Children aged 7-12 years with NF1 (n = 60) were compared with typically developing children (n = 36). Poor word readers with NF1 were classified according to impairment type (i.e., phonological, surface, mixed), and their reading subskills were compared. A hierarchical multiple re

Extension of Occupational Safety and Health Measures for the Protection of Beedi Workers in India.

Beedi workers in India, working in unorganized pockets with poor working conditions, suffer severe health impacts due to long-term exposure to the chemicals involved in beedi-making. Beedi rollers are piece-rated workers who undertake work from home. These workers lack occupational safety and protective mechanisms at home, and establishing accountability of the employers towards these workmen has also been challenging. Legislations like the Beedi and Cigar Workers (Condition of Employment) Act, 1966 (BCWA), and the Beedi Workers Welfare Fund Act, 1971 (BWWFA), have addressed various aspects of

Working memory training in students with dyslexia: Additional effects to reading and spelling remediation not likely.

BACKGROUND: Poor decoding and spelling (literacy) skills have been associated with weak working memory. AIMS: The aim of this study was to elucidate the contribution of working memory to literacy progress in students with dyslexia. It has been suggested that working memory can be enhanced by training, which in turn may have a positive effect on reading and spelling abilities (e.g., Peijnenborg et al., 2023). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Participants consisted of a specific group of children with dyslexia and weak working memory skills (n = 62). The effect of Cogmed training on decoding and spelli

Are failures to suppress obsessive-intrusive thoughts associated with working memory?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterised by repeated attempts to suppress obsessive-intrusive thoughts (OITs). Nonclinical individuals also regularly engage in thought suppression. Attempts to suppress OITs are often unsuccessful and there is wide variation in suppression abilities across nonclinical and clinical samples. Understanding the mechanisms that explain variations in suppression abilities could enhance our understanding of OCD. This study aimed to investigate one potential mechanism - working memory - using a comprehensive thought suppression ta
