Impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years: A global decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the burden of cancer is increasing. We aimed to assess the impact of population ageing on cancer-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We used the decomposition method to estimate the impact of ageing, population growth, and epidemiological change on cancer-related DALYs from 1990 to 2019, stratified by 204 countries/territories and by their sociodemographic index (SDI). This approach separates the net effect of population ageing from population growth and change in age-specific DALY rates. RESULTS: Cancer-related DALYs among indi

The global, regional, and national burden of cancer, 1990-2023, with forecasts to 2050: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of death globally. Accurate cancer burden information is crucial for policy planning, but many countries do not have up-to-date cancer surveillance data. To inform global cancer-control efforts, we used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 framework to generate and analyse estimates of cancer burden for 47 cancer types or groupings by age, sex, and 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023, cancer burden attributable to selected risk factors from 1990 to 2023, and forecasted cancer burden up to 2050. METHODS: Ca

Reframing disease burden: validation of DALY-per-case as a per-diagnosis severity metric.

BACKGROUND: Population-weighted metrics (incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), mortality to incidence ratio (MIR) can obscure per-case severity for less prevalent but high-impact conditions. This paper introduces DALY per case, total DALYs divided by incident cases, as a standardized estimate of healthy life-years lost per new diagnosis, integrating years of life lost (YLL) and years lived with disability (YLD). Validated using cancers and applied across diverse diseases, the metric enables prevalence-independent severity comparisons. METHODS: Using GBD 2021, we comput

National Burden and Trend of Cancer in Ethiopia, 2010-2019: a systemic analysis for Global burden of disease study.

Over the last two decades, we have tracked the national burden of cancer and its trends in Ethiopia, providing estimates of incidence, death, and disability adjusted life years. In Ethiopia, there were an estimated 53,560 (95% UI 52,480-55,540) new incident cases, 39,480 deaths (95% UI 32,640-46,440), and 1.42 million (95% UI 1.16-1.68) DALYs of cancer 2019. Cancer incidence, death, and DALYs counts increased by 32% (95% UI 11-55%), 29% (95% UI 12-44%), and 19% (95% UI - 2 to 44%) between 2010 to 2019, respectively, while age-standardised incidence, death, and DALYs rates increased by 5% (95%

Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2017: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

IMPORTANCE: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemio

Second Primary Cancer After Bladder Cancer: A Comprehensive Analysis of a National Cancer Registry.

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers and many patients will experience long-term survival. Non-urothelial second primary cancers (SPC) relatively frequently occur in the population of BC survivors. METHODS: Czech National Cancer Registry was the principal data source for this study. The risk of development of non-urothelial SPC after BC was assessed by the standardized incidence ratio (SIR). The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was utilized to determine the risk of death from SPC following BC. RESULTS: Of the total of 61,314 patients with BC, a cohort of 12,645

Temporal Trends in Cancer Burden and 27 Subtypes Among Women of Childbearing Age Globally from 1990 to 2021.

BackgroundCancer among women of childbearing age (WCBA, 15-49 years) has distinct clinical and public health implications. Using modeled estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021, we assessed temporal and spatial patterns of total cancer and 27 cancer subtypes among WCBA from 1990 to 2021.MethodsWe extracted incidence and mortality estimates for WCBA globally, across five socio-demographic index (SDI) regions, 21 GBD regions, and 204 countries and territories. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) were calculated. Temporal tren

[Thoracic imaging in the elderly].

In our hospital, 30% of plain chest radiographs are performed in patients over 70. Somewhat surprisingly, few papers specifically dealing with the aging lung are available in the radiological literature. It is obvious however that the differential diagnosis of a chest lesion is not the same if the patient is 40 or 70. A false positive diagnosis is a frequent potential mistake in aging subjects, for example: chondral calcification versus pulmonary nodule, hyperinflation versus emphysema, "normal aging" bronchial and tracheal calcification versus hypercalcemia, diaphragmatic defect versus tumor,

Factors related to the change in Swiss inpatient costs by disease: a 6-factor decomposition.

There is currently little systematic knowledge about the contribution of different factors to the increase in health care spending in high-income countries such as Switzerland. The aim of this paper is to decompose inpatient care costs in the Swiss canton of Zurich by 100 diseases and 42 age/sex groups and to assess the contribution of six factors to the change in aggregate costs between 2013 and 2017. These six factors are population size, age and sex structure, inpatient treated prevalence, utilization in terms of stays per patient, length of stay per case, and costs per treatment day. Using

Case Report: Management of Primary Tracheobronchial Light Chain Amyloidosis in a Patient With Biclonal Gammopathy Using a Systemic Bortezomib-Based Regimen.

Primary tracheobronchial light chain (AL) amyloidosis is a rare and heterogeneous disease characterized by the buildup of amyloid deposits in the airway mucosa. Although its treatment remains challenging, the current view is that the localized form can be treated conservatively due to its slow progression. While radiotherapy has proven effective in treating localized form of the disease, some patients do not respond to local treatment and continue to experience poor quality of life, highlighting the need to explore additional treatment strategies. In this report, we discuss a case of primary t

Global inequalities in tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer care quality from 1990 to 2021.

Tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer remains a major global cancer burden, but cross-national comparisons using composite proxy indicators are limited. Using Global Burden of Disease 1990-2021 estimates, we constructed a quality-of-care index (QCI) from incidence, mortality, prevalence, and disability outcomes; assessed temporal and geographic patterns; modeled associations with linear mixed models; and compared older adults with the overall population. Age-standardized incidence and death rates declined globally, but QCI remained highly unequal across 204 countries. QCI was higher in high-deve

Global epidemiological trend of cancer incidence and death in adults aged 60 years and older: a systematic analysis of data from GLOBOCAN 2022 and GBD2021.

BACKGROUND: Updated and comprehensive global assessments of cancer statistics specifically targeting adults aged ≥ 60 years have remained limited. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic epidemiological analysis of cancer burden in this rapidly growing demographic worldwide. METHODS: Population-based data from the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022 and the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) 2021 were used and analyzed in this study. The main outcomes of this study were age-standardised incidence (ASIR) or mortality rate (ASMR), and average annual percent change (AAPC). A Bayesian ag

Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2016: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

IMPORTANCE: The increasing burden due to cancer and other noncommunicable diseases poses a threat to human development, which has resulted in global political commitments reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases. To determine if these commitments have resulted in improved cancer control, quantitative assessments of the cancer burden are required. OBJECTIVE: To assess the burden for 29 cancer groups over time to provide a framework for policy discussion, resource allocation, and research focus.

Cancer Burden in China during 1990-2019: Analysis of the Global Burden of Disease.

This study reports the risk factors, trends, and burden of cancer in China from 1990 to 2019 from the Global Burden of Diseases. The incidence, mortality, and DALY of all cancers in China for the past 30 years were analyzed. In 2019, the age-standardized rates (ASRs) of cancer incidence, mortality, and DALY in China were 232.42/100 000, 136.72/100 000, and 3288.22/100 000, respectively. The five cancers with the highest age-standardized incidence rates were lung, stomach, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. From 1990 to 2019, the number of new cancer cases, deaths, and DALY increased by
