Diversity and evolution of the class A chromosomal beta-lactamase gene in Klebsiella pneumoniae.

We investigated the diversity of the chromosomal class A beta-lactamase gene in Klebsiella pneumoniae in order to study the evolution of the gene. A 789-bp portion was sequenced in a panel of 28 strains, representative of three phylogenetic groups, KpI, KpII, and KpIII, recently identified in K. pneumoniae and of different chromosomal beta-lactamase variants previously identified. Three groups of sequences were found, two of them corresponding to the families SHV (pI 7.6) and LEN (pI 7.1), respectively, and one, more heterogeneous, corresponding to a new family that we named OKP (for other K.

[Beta-lactamases in laboratory and their role in resistance Part I.: Evolution of bacterial resistance mediated by beta-lactamases].

Beta-lactamases are the commonest cause of bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. They have been classified phenotypically by their isoelectric point, substrate profile, susceptibility to inhibitors and genetic origin. Chromosomal beta-lactamases are typical for certain bacterial species and plasmid beta-lactamases are transferable between different species and genera. Sequencing of beta-lactamase genes enabled to divide them into four classes: A, B, C and D. The ability of a beta-lactamase to confer resistance depends on its location, kinetics, quantity and physicochemical condition

Bacterial diversity, quantitative risk assessment of spring waterborne pathogens and their biocontrol through phyto-biosorbents.

Bacterial contamination of drinking water is a significant cause of water-borne illnesses in many developing countries, where water sources are commonly shared by the community. Therefore, the recent research was designed to screen the bacterial diversity associated with spring water, to assess the bacterial risk in both adults and children, and to remediate bacterial contaminants using green remediation technology via Brassica rapa and Spinacia oleracea. Microbial growth media, microscopic techniques, biochemical tests, ribotyping, antibiogram, and resistogram analysis were used to characteri

Assessing computational predictions of antimicrobial resistance phenotypes from microbial genomes.

The advent of rapid whole-genome sequencing has created new opportunities for computational prediction of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) phenotypes from genomic data. Both rule-based and machine learning (ML) approaches have been explored for this task, but systematic benchmarking is still needed. Here, we evaluated four state-of-the-art ML methods (Kover, PhenotypeSeeker, Seq2Geno2Pheno and Aytan-Aktug), an ML baseline and the rule-based ResFinder by training and testing each of them across 78 species-antibiotic datasets, using a rigorous benchmarking workflow that integrates three evaluation
