The Association Between Cultural Tightness and COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence From 28 Countries: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Social norms provided a framework for understanding a variety of behaviors. Cultural tightness was introduced to measure the level of adherence to social norms and tolerance of deviant behavior. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the association between cultural tightness and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: A total of 44,339 participants aged 18 years and older were enrolled from 28 different countries between 2020 and 2022. We used the Vaccine Confidence Index (3 items related to evaluation of importance, effectiveness, and safety) with a 5-point Likert scale to collect COVID-1

Sex-stratified patterns in geriatric patients with mild traumatic brain injury and intracranial bleeding: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common diagnosis among elderly patients treated in emergency departments. It is often complicated by age-related physiological changes such as brain atrophy, cognitive impairment, and frailty. While sex differences are increasingly recognized in TBI pathophysiology and clinical management, limited research has explored their impact on geriatric mTBI complicated by intracranial bleeding. This study aimed to investigate sex-stratified patterns in injury mechanisms, clinical presentation, and associated injuries among older adults with mTBI. ME

Management of a Massive Retropharyngeal Abscess Through an External Cervical Approach: A Case Report.

Retropharyngeal abscess appears to be decreasing in incidence in older children. It can be caused by local trauma to the posterior pharynx. Contributing risk factors include poor oral hygiene, diabetes, immunocompromised states, and low socioeconomic status. Early diagnosis is essential, as it may lead to potentially life-threatening dyspnea that requires rapid airway management. A 14-year-old boy was referred to our hospital with complaints of dyspnea, rapidly progressive dysphagia, and high-grade fever for four days. The patient reported a history of neck pain and stiffness over the past twe

Relationship between COVID-19 cases and monthly mortality from all causes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in 16 countries, 2020-21.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, mortality from some chronic diseases increased. In this study, we evaluated monthly excess mortality from all causes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and diabetes during the months of 2020 and 2021, examining its relationship with COVID-19 cases. METHODS: Monthly cause-specific mortality data were downloaded from public repositories of national statistics offices or directly requested from them, and population data were obtained from the United Nations archives. Excess deaths were estimated as the difference between observed and expected deaths.

Using machine learning to determine the nationalities of the fastest 100-mile ultra-marathoners and identify top racing events.

The present study intended to determine the nationality of the fastest 100-mile ultra-marathoners and the country/events where the fastest 100-mile races are held. A machine learning model based on the XG Boost algorithm was built to predict the running speed from the athlete's age (Age group), gender (Gender), country of origin (Athlete country) and where the race occurred (Event country). Model explainability tools were then used to investigate how each independent variable influenced the predicted running speed. A total of 172,110 race records from 65,392 unique runners from 68 different co

Exploring variation of coverage and access to dental care for adults in 11 European countries: a vignette approach.

BACKGROUND: Oral health, coupled with rising awareness on the impact that limited dental care coverage has on oral health and general health and well-being, has received increased attention over the past few years. The purpose of the study was to compare the statutory coverage and access to dental care for adult services in 11 European countries using a vignette approach. METHODS: We used three patient vignettes to highlight the differences of the dimensions of coverage and access to dental care (coverage, cost-sharing and accessibility). The three vignettes describe typical care pathways for

Dairy Cows' Udder Pathogens and Occurrence of Virulence Factors in Staphylococci.

This study investigated 960 Slovak and Czech spotted cattle from four different conventional (non-organic) dairy herds located in Eastern Slovakia and Czechia during early lactation (14-100 days after calving). Dairy cows were examined clinically; milk from fore-stripping of each udder quarter was subjected to sensory examination and assessed by the California mastitis test (CMT), and laboratory analyses of bacterial pathogens in milk, including virulence factors, were conducted. Positive CMT scores (1-3) for one or more quarters were detected in 271 (28.2%) of the examined animals. Out of 230

A Birth Cohort Study of Maternal and Infant Serum PCB-153 and DDE Concentrations and Responses to Infant Tuberculosis Vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Reasons for the highly variable and often poor protection conferred by the Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine are multifaceted and poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether early-life exposure to PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and DDE [1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene] reduces 6-month infant BCG vaccine response. METHODS: Data came from families participating in a prospective birth cohort in eastern Slovakia. At birth, maternal and cord blood were collected for chemical analyses, and infants were immunized with BCG. Blood wa

A quantitative estimate of melanoma mortality from ultraviolet A sunbed use in the U.K.

BACKGROUND: Untreated thyroid disorders may precipitate heart failure (HF) decompensation. Assessment of cardiac filling pressures may aid in the early detection and prevention of clinical decompensation. Therapy guided by monitoring of cardiac filling pressures has been shown to improve quality of life and survival and reduce hospitalizations of individuals with HF. We have developed a non-invasive method to assess left ventricular filling pressures (LVFP) by analysing the photoplethysmography signal with Seeling HeartCore technology (Seerlinq, Bratislava, Slovakia). Corynebacterium endometrii sp. nov., isolated from the uterus of a cow with endometritis.

A Gram-stain-positive bacterial strain, designated LMM-1653T, was isolated from a uterus swab from a Holstein Frisian dairy cow in the frame of a clinical sampling trial. The isolated strain, which showed a rod to coccoid shape, was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, its closest relatives were Corynebacterium flavescens and Corynebacterium argatoratense (96.50 % similarity each), suggesting that this isolate represents a novel species. Strain LMM-1653T had a quinone system consisting mainly of menaquinones MK-8(H2) and MK-9(H2). The polar lipid

Molecular and morphological circumscription of Mesocestoides tapeworms from red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in central Europe.

Here we examine 3157 foxes from 6 districts of the Slovak Republic in order to determine for the first time the distribution, prevalence and identity of Mesocestodes spp. endemic to this part of central Europe. During the period 2001-2006, an average of 41.9% of foxes were found to harbour Mesocestoides infections. Among the samples we confirmed the widespread and common occurrence of M. litteratus (Batsch, 1786), and report the presence, for the first time, of M. lineatus (Goeze, 1782) in the Slovak Republic, where it has a more restricted geographical range and low prevalence (7%). Relationship between X-inactivation and clinical involvement in Fabry heterozygotes. Eleven novel mutations in the alpha-galactosidase A gene in the Czech and Slovak population.

We have identified 21 different alpha-galactosidase A gene (GLA) mutations in 22 unrelated Czech and Slovak families with Fabry disease. Eleven of these mutations were novel (point mutations D93N, A135V, D155H, G171R, Q280K, G360S, Q330X, splicing errors c.194ins14, c.801ins36 and deletions c.674_732del59, g.3405_6021del2617). Genotyping of family members for family-specific mutations revealed 55 heterozygotes that manifested clinical symptoms of different severity. To examine the contribution of X-inactivation skewing to disease manifestation in Fabry heterozygotes, we have adopted the Mainz

Reconsidering vaccinate-to-live strategies in EU foot-and-mouth disease control.

In January 2025, FMD was detected in water buffalos near Berlin. A few weeks later, a different FMDV-strain was confirmed on dairy farms in Slovakia and Hungary. Since February 2026, Cyprus and Lesvos are confronted with FMD-outbreaks. While Europe is rethinking its FMD-strategies, the two affected member states, Cyprus and Greece, take opposite approaches to control the disease. FMD-vaccination was pivotal for its eradication in many parts of the world. Such regions fought new outbreaks by traditional animal-disease-control. In 2001, a devastating FMD-epizootic swept across the UK and contine

Economic costs of veterinary drug and antibiotic use in commercial dairy cattle herds in Central European countries.

Antimicrobial use in livestock production is a critical issue in terms of both animal health and public health, particularly due to its role in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In this study, the veterinary drug costs, with a particular focus on antibiotics, were surveyed in 20 commercial dairy cattle herds comprising a total of 18,653 cows in five Central-European countries (Czechia, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia) in 2019. The distribution of veterinary drug costs by product groups and indication, as well as the antibiotic usage by indication and class of active subs
