A low-cost, disposable paper-based enzymatic sensor has been developed for the quantitative estimation of urea concentration in serum samples. The sensor utilizes a novel detection mechanism, where ion conduction through a localized sensing region is assessed to measure changes in impedance, enabling highly sensitive detection. The sensing platform is fabricated by functionalizing polyaniline (PANI) over a chromatography paper substrate, enhancing electrical conductivity and allowing covalent immobilization of urease via glutaraldehyde cross-linking. Additionally, material characterization via

Rhodotorula yeasts are pink, encapsulated basidiomycetes isolated from a variety of environments and clinical settings. They are increasingly linked with disease, particularly central venous catheter infections and meningitis, in immunocompromised patients. Eight clinical and eight environmental strains molecularly typed as Rhodotorula mucilaginosa were compared to six Cryptococcus neoformans strains for phenotypic variability. Growth on cell integrity-challenging media suggested that R. mucilaginosa cells possess differences in signaling pathways, cell wall composition, or assembly and that t

Heavy metals contamination of soil has been considered as a global environmental problem, and consequently various soil amendments have been widely used in immobilization. Previous studies have reported that micro-/nano-hydroxyapatite (MHA/NHA) as a novel chemical material could alleviate soil acidity and reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals. However, the mechanism of soil microorganism responding to the application of MHA/NHA is little studied. Presently, an in-situ field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of MHA/NHA and the other three traditional amendments including alka

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Controversy exists regarding the characteristics of Helicobacter pylori infection-negative gastric cancer (HPIN-GC). The aim of this study was to evaluate clinicopathologic features of HPIN-GC compared to H. pylori infection-positive gastric cancer (HPIP-GC) using a comprehensive analysis that included genetic and environmental factors.
METHODS: H. pylori infection status of 705 resectable gastric cancer patients was determined by the rapid urease test, testing for anti-H. pylori antibodies, histologic analysis and culture of gastric cancer tissue samples, and history of H. p

Tinea faciei is a relatively uncommon dermatophyte infection entailing atypical clinical symptoms, usually misdiagnosed and treated with corticosteroids. The authors describe a case of tinea faciei on the right eyebrow caused by Trichophyton interdigitale. The patient was an 18-year-old girl, who had an inflammatory plaque with a scaly, pustular surface on the right eyebrow and upper eyelid, which had persisted for over 1 month. She was once misdiagnosed as having eczema and was treated using corticosteroid cream. A diagnosis of tinea faciei was made based on direct microscopy and culture. The

While calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate make up at least 80% of all kidney stones, infection-induced and uric acid stones occur in 10% and 8%, respectively. Although any type of stone may become infected, the term "infection stones" means that stone formation exclusively depends on urease-producing bacteria. The splitting of urea leads to a rise in urinary pH which may induce crystallization of struvite (magnesium-ammonium-phosphate), the major constituent of infection stones, or carbonate apatite. Struvite stones account for the majority of staghorn calculi. They can grow quite large and

To understand pathogenesis of H. pylori in stomach diseases including gastric cancer, molecular bacteriological studies are important. The studies are greatly advanced by information of the whole genome sequence of this bacterium in 1997. Various methods of gene manipulation to identify the genes involved in pathogenesis are now available such as transformation followed by construction of knockout mutants, complementation using H. pylori-E. coli shuttle vectors, random insertion mutagenesis, and RT-PCR or proteome analysis of in vivo-expressed genes. The molecular mechanism of persistent infec

BACKGROUND: Motility of Helicobacter pylori is essential for colonization. H. pylori has been shown to exhibit chemotactic activity toward urea and sodium and bicarbonate ions, which are secreted from the gastric epithelia. The importance of urease activity for chemotactic motility of H. pylori in a viscous environment has also been shown. Consequently, application of drugs inhibiting chemotactic motility has been proposed as a strategy for H. pylori eradication. This inhibitory effect can be evaluated through assay of chemotaxis and swarming.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: H. pylori CPY3401 and ATCC

Despite the induction of an immunological reaction, Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis is a chronic disease, suggesting that this microbe can evade the host immune defense. Previous studies by our group showed that H. pylori suppresses the in vitro proliferative response of human mononuclear cells to mitogens and antigens. Here we demonstrate that the antiproliferative activity of H. pylori also affects the proliferation of various mammalian cell lines (U937, Jurkat, AGS, Kato-3, HEP-2, and P388D1). This effect is detectable in the first 16 h of incubation and maximal between 24 and 48 h

The concordance rate between a rapid urease test (CLOtest) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of Helicobacter pylori in gastric biopsy samples was investigated. To avoid the bias produced by patchy distribution of the organism in the stomach, the samples used for these two tests were not obtained from two different sites of the antrum. Instead, the PCR assay was performed with the the same biopsy sample that was taken for the CLOtest. Among 82 biopsy samples included for this study, 56 were positive and 26 were negative by CLOtest. Of the 56 CLOtest-positive samples, 5

To compare the efficacy of imprint cytology, histology and CLO-test (for biopsy urease) in detecting Helicobacter pylori infection, antral biopsies were taken from 239 patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Both imprint cytology and histology showed the presence of H. pylori in 215 (90%) patients. The sensitivity and specificity of imprint cytology vis-à-vis histology was noted to be 100%. The CLO-test was performed in 165 patients and was positive in 130 (79%) patients. The sensitivity and specificity of the CLO-test were 89% and 95%, respectively. The median time required for

Helicobacter (Campylobacter) pylori has been cultured from the antral biopsies of 85-90% of patients of gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer at different centres. Studies conducted all over the world have firmly implicated this organism in the aetiology of active superficial gastritis and recurrences of duodenal ulcer. Two hundred patients with upper abdominal pain, distension, vomiting and/or haemetemesis were subjected to OGD scopy. In 163 of these patients there was endoscopic evidence of gastritis; in 24 there was DU; in 3, GU and in 10 it was normal. Diagnosis of H pylori infection

The pathogenic yeast Cryptococcus neoformans causes life-threatening meningoencephalitis in individuals with compromised immune systems. The ability of the fungus to cause disease depends on key cell-surface features, such as a polysaccharide capsule that protects it from the mammalian immune system. However, the mechanisms by which C. neoformans traffics polysaccharide capsule, melanin, and other materials to the cell surface are poorly understood. In this study, we employed mutants lacking specific subunits of the adaptor protein complex 1 (AP-1) to investigate its role in the elaboration of

Improving the utilization of agricultural biological waste resources is a critical issue. This study initially assessed the effects of adding attapulgite to vegetable compost. Additionally, the study investigated the effects of attapulgite-modified compost on soil nutrient release and microbial community changes through nutrient loss experiments. Results indicated that adding attapulgite increased compost humification, significantly promoted humic acid synthesis, and improved the aromaticity and structural stability of humus. Attapulgite-modified organic fertilizer effectively retains soil nut

Swertia perennis Linnaeus (SP) has been utilised to treat gastritis. We report the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis, antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of SP. The correlation between the biological activities and total bioactive contents of the extracts was also studied via multivariate analysis. Methanol extract contained many active compounds and exhibited good antioxidant activity. Therefore, this was selected for further phytochemical profiling and stability studies. Fourteen compounds were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ioni

A wearable noninvasive biosensor for in situ urea detection and quantification was developed using a urease-immobilized photonic interpenetrating polymer network (IPNurease) film. The photonic IPN film was intertwined with solid-state cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCsolid) and a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) network on a flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrate adhered to a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) chip that was fabricated using an aluminum mold. The presence of urea in the chemical matrix of human sweat red-shifted the reflected color of the photonic IPNurease film, and quantification

Helicobacter pylori infects the human stomach and causes a spectrum of disease that includes gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric adenocarcinoma. A chronic, neutrophil-rich inflammatory response characterizes this infection. It is established that H. pylori stimulates neutrophil chemotaxis and a robust respiratory burst, but other aspects of this interaction are incompletely defined. We demonstrate here that H. pylori induces N1-like subtype differentiation of human neutrophils as indicated by profound nuclear hypersegmentation, a CD62Ldim, CD16bright, CD11bbright, CD66bbright, CD63bright sur
