A Comparative Analysis of Standard vs Jelonet/Gauze/Gamgee Dressing for Lower Limb Free Flap Reconstruction.

UNLABELLED: Lower limb free flaps require regular monitoring in the immediate days postoperatively and often involve prolonged outpatient wound care. Post-operative dressings are complicated when a circular external fixator is used. Circumferential post-operative dressings are the standard option, such as Jelonet/gauze/wool/crepe. An alternative option is the use of Jelonet and gauze, with Gamgee (JGG) wrapped loosely over the frame instead. This allows easier monitoring with complete flap visualisation, avoids constriction and allows much quicker dressing application. This dressing option has

Are we mis-estimating chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy? Analysis of assessment methodologies from a prospective, multinational, longitudinal cohort study of patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: There are inconsistencies in the literature regarding the prevalence and assessment of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). This study explored CIPN natural history and its characteristics in patients receiving taxane- and platinum-based chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Multi-country multisite prospective longitudinal observational study. Patients were assessed before commencing and three weekly during chemotherapy for up to six cycles, and at 6,9, and 12 months using clinician-based scales (NCI-CTCAE; WHO-CIPN criterion), objective assessments (cotton wool test;1

Isolation of bacteria from diabetic foot ulcers with special reference to anaerobe isolation by simple two-step combustion technique in candle jar.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Although polymicrobial infections involving both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are very common in diabetic foot ulcers, in many centres of developing countries, anaerobes are rarely isolated due to technical difficulties. This can be overcome by using a new simple, innovative technique of a combination of candle combustion and use of acidified copper-coated steel wool, as reported here. METHODS: In-house developed method was used in a prospective clinico-microbiological study for anaerobes from randomly selected 43 patients with diabetic foot ulcers along with conven

Long-Term Provision of Environmental Resources Alters Behavior but not Physiology or Neuroanatomy of Male and Female BALB/c and C57BL/6 Mice.

Few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of providing environmental resources to mice. This consideration is important given that mice are often maintained in vivaria for months. We evaluated the effects of providing simple cage resources (wood wool, cotton nesting material, a plastic tunnel, and oat cereal) compared with standard housing (solid-bottom cage with hardwood chips) to group-housed adult male and female C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice (n = 20/sex/strain/group) over 6 mo to determine whether these resources had a lasting effect on animal physiology, anatomy, and behavior. Purtscher's retinopathy associated with acute pancreatitis.

PURPOSE: Purtscher's retinopathy is a rare condition that is associated with complement-activating systemic diseases such as acute pancreatitis. After pancreatic injury or inflammation, proteases such as trypsin activate the complement system and can potentially cause coagulation and leukoembolization of retinal precapillary arterioles. Specifically, intermediate-sized emboli are sufficiently small enough to pass through larger arteries yet large enough to remain lodged in precapillary arterioles and cause the clinical appearance of Purtscher's retinopathy. This pathology may present with opti

Methods of sperm preparation for assisted reproduction.

Because seminal plasma contains factors which inhibit the fertilising ability of spermatozoa, it is essential that spermatozoa be separated from it quickly and efficiently. Four basic approaches for this exist: (1) simple dilution and washing; (2) sperm migration (either direct from liquefied semen, from a suspension of washed spermatozoa or from a washed sperm pellet); (3) selective washing procedures (mainly Percoll and Nycodenz density gradients); and (4) adherence methods for the elimination of debris and dead spermatozoa (glass wool, glass beads and Sephadex columns). While the success of

Genome-wide comparison of traditional and commercial Mehraban sheep populations reveals differences in genetic structure, linkage disequilibrium, and inbreeding patterns.

Understanding the genetic architecture of sheep under different breeding systems is crucial for enhancing productivity and maintaining adaptive capacity. We analyzed 145 Mehraban sheep from commercial (n = 97) and traditional (n = 48) populations utilizing the OvineSNP50 BeadChip array. The analysis revealed that the linkage disequilibrium (LD) was numerically higher on average in the traditional population at both short and long distances (mean r² = 0.249 at < 10 kb; 0.037 at 5 Mb) in comparison to the commercial population (mean r² = 0.220 and 0.027, respectively), suggesting a smaller histo

Paget's disease of bone in a North African population: clinical, imaging, and therapeutic insights from a Moroccan case series.

BACKGROUND: Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is a non-malignant skeletal disease that has become rare in recent decades. It is characterized by disorganized bone remodeling. Although its presentation varies worldwide, it is infrequently reported in Africans. To our knowledge, this is the first case series of PDB reported from Morocco, highlighting clinical and imaging features in a North African population. METHODS: A retrospective case series and a literature review. Seven patients were identified during an 8-year period and diagnosed with Paget's disease of bone. Demographic profiles, clinical

Analytical characterization, antifungal activity and textile dyeing of blue green pigment produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa for potential industrial application.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces the blue-green phenazine pigment known as pyocyanin, which has shown promise in the fields of health, agriculture, environmental protection, and cosmetics. Because of their natural colour, safety, and inexpensive manufacturing costs, microbial pigments are a promising substitute for natural pigments and offer a wide range of possible applications. The present work focused on the extraction of a blue-green pigment produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The chloroform extraction method was employed to extract the pigment. The yield of total pigment production was 50

Delayed Re-epithelialization Following Full-Field Er:YAG Laser Resurfacing: A Case Report.

Full-field erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser resurfacing is widely used for photoaging and scars, with re-epithelialization expected within five to seven days. Delayed healing is uncommon and may result from infection, inappropriate wound care, or allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). We present a 32-year-old woman who underwent full-face Er:YAG resurfacing (fluence: 8 J/cm², pulse duration: 300 µs, four passes, depth: 600 µm). Despite standard postoperative instructions, she substituted petrolatum ointment with a lanolin-containing moisturizer. At day seven, erosions and crusti

Archival and Newly Isolated Historical Bacillus anthracis Strains Populate the Deeper Phylogeny of the A.Br.075(Sterne) Clade.

The anthrax pathogen Bacillus anthracis can remain dormant as spores in soil for many years. This applies to both natural foci and to sites of anthropogenic activity such as tanneries, abattoirs, or wool factories. The A.Br.075 (A-branch) clade (also known as A.Br.Sterne) is prominent not only because it comprises several outbreak strains but even more so because spore preparations of its namesake, the Sterne strain, are counted among the most utilized anthrax animal vaccines. In this study, we genome-sequenced and analyzed 56 additional B. anthracis isolates of the A.Br.075 clade. Four of the

Retinal manifestations in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and pathogenetic implications: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The pandemic of COVID-19 has been caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. Apart from respiratory malfunction, COVID-19 causes a system-wide thromboembolic state, leading to serious cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular manifestations. However, our knowledge regarding retinal manifestations due to systemic COVID-19 is minimal. This systematic review has comprehensively summarized all retinal manifestations secondary to COVID-19 disease recorded till date since the beginning of the pandemic. METHODS: All studies published

N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Is Related to Retinal Microvascular Damage: The Rotterdam Study.

OBJECTIVE: N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a marker of cardiac dysfunction and has been linked to various indices of large vessel disease. However, it remains unclear whether NT-proBNP also relates to microvascular damage. In a community-dwelling population, we studied the association between NT-proBNP and retinal microvascular damage. APPROACH AND RESULTS: From the population-based Rotterdam Study, we included 8437 participants (mean age 64.1 years and 59% women) without a history of cardiovascular disease, with NT-proBNP data and gradable retinal images. NT-proBNP s
