Efficacy of toothpaste containing Brazilian green propolis extracts with an optimal kaempferide/betuletol ratio for improving oral microbiota: A randomized, controlled, paired crossover study.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources and has been used in traditional folk medicine for centuries. Propolis has various biological properties, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. The use of propolis in oral health care is attributable to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. However, limited evidence exists on the in vivo efficacy of propolis against periodontal pathogens. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Brazilian green propolis (BGP)-co

Periodontitis and risk of cancer: Mechanistic evidence.

This review aims to critically analyze the pathways of interaction and the pathogenic mechanisms linking periodontitis and oral bacteria with the initiation/progression of cancer at different body compartments. A higher risk of head and neck cancer has been consistently associated with periodontitis. This relationship has been explained by the local promotion of dysbiosis, chronic inflammation, immune evasion, and direct (epi)genetic damage to epithelial cells by periodontal pathobionts and their toxins. Epidemiological reports have also studied a possible link between periodontitis and the in

Antimicrobial activity of silver diamine fluoride on human periodontitis microbiota.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has been used in management of dentinal hypersensitivity and dental caries. This in vitro study evaluated the antimicrobial effects of SDF on subgingival microorganisms from severe human periodontitis lesions. Subgingival biofilm specimens from 24 adults with severe periodontitis were mixed in vitro with 19% or 38% SDF or left untreated (n = 24 per group) and then inoculated on enriched Brucella blood agar with anaerobic incubation. Selected red- and orange-complex periodontal pathogens were phenotypically identified in the subgingival specimens, including Porphyr

Distinct microbes, metabolites, and ecologies define the microbiome in deficient and proficient mismatch repair colorectal cancers.

BACKGROUND: Links between colorectal cancer (CRC) and the gut microbiome have been established, but the specific microbial species and their role in carcinogenesis remain an active area of inquiry. Our understanding would be enhanced by better accounting for tumor subtype, microbial community interactions, metabolism, and ecology. METHODS: We collected paired colon tumor and normal-adjacent tissue and mucosa samples from 83 individuals who underwent partial or total colectomies for CRC. Mismatch repair (MMR) status was determined in each tumor sample and classified as either deficient MMR (dM

DNA-based adaptive immunity protect host from infection-associated periodontal bone resorption via recognition of Porphyromonas gingivalis virulence component.

BACKGROUND: Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is one of a constellation of oral organisms associated with human chronic periodontitis. While adaptive immunity to periodontal pathogen proteins has been investigated and is an important component of periodontal bone resorption, the effect of periodontal pathogen DNA in eliciting systemic and mucosal antibody and modulating immune responses has not been investigated. METHODS: Rowett rats were locally injected with whole genomic Pg DNA in alum. Escherichia coli (Ec) genomic DNA, Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) genomic DNA, and saline/alum injected rats s

Oral microbiome dysbiosis and innate immune dysregulation as determinants of oronasal fistula after primary cleft palate repair.

Oronasal fistula complicates 15-55% of primary cleft palate repairs, with recurrence rates approaching 43% after secondary closure, and global fistula rates have risen despite decades of iterative technical refinement, a trend that mechanical closure quality alone cannot explain. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception through April 2026 to argue that ONF is increasingly recognizable as a biologically mediated complication in which oral microbiome dysbiosis and innate immune dysregulation are primary, historically underrecognize

Bioinformatic Resistome Profiling of Metal Tolerance Mechanisms in Endodontic Infections: Implications for Antimicrobial Nanoparticle-Based Biomaterials.

BACKGROUND: Metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles are increasingly explored as antimicrobial biomaterials in endodontics due to their multi-target mechanisms of action, largely mediated by metal ion release (e.g., Ag+, Cu+). However, bacterial metal resistance systems, particularly efflux-related proteins, may influence their antimicrobial performance. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence and distribution of metal resistance-associated proteins in bacteria involved in endodontic infections using a bioinformatic approach. METHODS: An in silico, cross-sectional bioinformatic analysis was

Impact of concomitant medications on efficacy of CLDN18.2-specific CAR-T cell therapy in advanced gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Claudin18.2 (CLDN18.2)-specific CAR-T cell therapy has demonstrated promise in advanced gastric cancer (GC). However, the impact of concomitant medications on the efficacy outcomes remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed advanced GC patients receiving CLDN18.2-specific CAR-T cell therapy from a phase I trial. Concomitant medications were defined as any drugs administered within 30 days before and after CAR-T cell infusion, including corticosteroids, antibiotics, tocilizumab, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), thrombopoietin (TPO), and erythropoietin. Effect of sleeve gastrectomy on the levels of oral volatile sulfur compounds and halitosis-related bacteria.

BACKGROUND: The association between sleeve gastrectomy and halitosis remains relatively unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of sleeve gastrectomy on halitosis and the oral bacterial species associated with halitosis in patients with obesity. METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal cohort study that examined patients before and after sleeve gastrectomy and followed the patients at three time intervals (1, 3, and 6 months) after sleeve gastrectomy. Clinical periodontal measurements (plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI], and probing depth [PD]) were obtained. In ad

The Microbiome in Quiescent Crohn's Disease With Persistent Symptoms Show Disruptions in Microbial Sulfur and Tryptophan Pathways.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Even in the absence of inflammation, persistent symptoms in Crohn's disease (CD) are prevalent and worsen quality of life. Amongst patients without inflammation (quiescent CD), we hypothesized that microbial community structure and function, including tryptophan metabolism, would differ between patients with persistent symptoms (qCD + S) and without persistent symptoms (qCD-S). METHODS: We performed a multicenter observational study nested within the Study of a Prospective Adult Research Cohort with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Quiescent inflammation was defined by fecal c

Low Concentrations of Chlorhexidine Inhibit the Formation and Structural Integrity of Enzyme-Treated Multispecies Oral Biofilms.

The self-produced matrix of biofilms, consisting of extracellular polymeric substances, plays an important role in biofilm adhesion to surfaces and the structural integrity of biofilms. In dentistry, biofilms cause multiple diseases such as caries, periodontitis, and pulpitis. Disruption of these biofilms adhering to dental hard tissues may pose a major challenge since biofilms show higher tolerance to antimicrobials and antibiotics than planktonic cells. In this study, the effect of low concentrations of chlorhexidine (CHX) on enzyme-treated multispecies oral biofilm was investigated in an in

Metagenomic analysis of primary colorectal carcinomas and their metastases identifies potential microbial risk factors.

The paucity of microbiome studies at intestinal tissues has contributed to a yet limited understanding of potential viral and bacterial cofactors of colorectal cancer (CRC) carcinogenesis or progression. We analysed whole-genome sequences of CRC primary tumours, their corresponding metastases and matched normal tissue for sequences of viral, phage and bacterial species. Bacteriome analysis showed Fusobacterium nucleatum, Streptococcus sanguinis, F. Hwasookii, Anaerococcus mediterraneensis and further species enriched in primary CRCs. The primary CRC of one patient was enriched for F. alocis, S
