Agreement of anterior corneal aberrations between a Placido-disk-based wavefront analyzer and a Scheimpflug system in myopic candidates for refractive surgery.

PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the anterior corneal aberrometry between Pentacam HR, a Scheimpflug-based imaging system, and Peramis, an aberrometer that combines a pyramidal wavefront sensor with Placido-disk topography. METHODS: Myopic, otherwise healthy patients who were scheduled for refractive surgery were examined for anterior corneal aberration profiles using Pentacam HR and Peramis in a 4 mm pupil-centered analysis zone. This profile included corneal total aberrations (TAs), lower-order aberrations (LOAs), higher-order aberrations (HOAs), trefoil (Z(3,-3), Z(3,3)), coma (Z(3,-1), Z(3,1)

Accommodative behaviour and retinal defocus of children during prolonged viewing of electronic devices while wearing dual-focus myopia control soft contact lenses.

PURPOSE: Chronic hyperopic defocus from inadequate accommodation during near tasks may be associated with axial eye growth. This study examined accommodative behaviour and retinal defocus in myopic and emmetropic children after 1 h of continuous electronic device use. METHODS: Thirty-four children (17 per group, aged 7-17) participated, including myopes wearing dual-focus (DF) myopia control contact lenses (MiSight 1-day) and uncorrected emmetropes. In phase one, on-axis aberrometry data were collected at distances from 4.00 to 0.20 m, corresponding to target vergences from -0.25 to -5.00 D.

Wavefront analysis to diagnose blunt trauma-induced Weigert ligament dialysis: Isolated peripheral posterior lenticonus.

A 15-year-old male patient presented with vision loss after blunt trauma to the right eye and with clinical evidence of posterior lenticonus. The posttraumatic lenticonus was eccentric (superotemporal). Irregular astigmatism with high myopia on dilated retinoscopy within the lenticonus, localized posterior convexity of peripheral capsule on ultrasound biomicroscopy, and increased higher-order aberrations (HOAs) on wavefront aberrometry compared with fellow-eye findings confirmed the diagnosis. To our knowledge, acquired peripheral posterior lenticonus representing dialysis of Weigert ligament

[Detection of early forms of keratoconus - current screening methods].

The detection of early forms of keratoconus is still a challenge for clinicians. Beside clinical examination and diagnosis of keratoconus, a series of examination techniques has been established in clinical routine to assist in the diagnosis of early forms of keratoconus: corneal topography for measuring the geometry of the corneal front surface, tomography for measuring the geometry of structures of the anterior segment of the eye, aberrometers for evaluation of optical aberrations of the entire eye, and a system for investigation of the biomechanical properties of the cornea. These instrumen

Managing Post-Keratoplasty Astigmatism: High-Tech vs. Low-Tech Imaging Techniques for Guiding Suture Manipulation.

Astigmatism is a visually significant condition that can develop after keratoplasty. The management of post-keratoplasty astigmatism can be performed both when transplant sutures are in place and when they have been removed. Fundamental for astigmatism management is its identification and characterization in terms of type, amount, and direction. Commonly, post-keratoplasty astigmatism is evaluated through corneal tomography or topo-aberrometry; however, many other techniques can be used in case these instruments are not readily available. Here, we describe several low-tech and high-tech techni

[Detection of Subclinical Keratoconus].

The early stage of a keratoconus (KC), without classic and characteristic clinical findings, is a contraindication for refractive surgery. This article therefore shows, in accordance with the current state of the art, ways of identifying risk factors for subclinical keratoconus. After delimitation, this publication contains a current summary of epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology of subclinical and clinical KC. Furthermore, an overview of different grading scales is given. A detailed description of several practical possibilities for detection of subclinical KC is the focus of this publi

Asymmetric wavefront aberrations and pupillary shapes induced by electrical stimulation of ciliary nerve in cats measured with compact wavefront aberrometer.

To investigate the changes in the wavefront aberrations and pupillary shape in response to electrical stimulation of the branches of the ciliary nerves in cats. Seven eyes of seven cats were studied under general anesthesia. Trains of monophasic pulses (current, 0.1 to 1.0 mA; duration, 0.5 ms/phase; frequency, 5 to 40 Hz) were applied to the lateral or medial branch of the short ciliary nerve near the posterior pole of the eye. A pair of electrodes was hooked onto one or both branch of the short ciliary nerve. The electrodes were placed about 5 mm from the scleral surface. The wavefront aberr

Method for expressing clinical and statistical significance of ocular and corneal wave front error aberrations.

PURPOSE: The significance of ocular or corneal aberrations may be subject to misinterpretation whenever eyes with different pupil sizes or the application of different Zernike expansion orders are compared. A method is shown that uses simple mathematical interpolation techniques based on normal data to rapidly determine the clinical significance of aberrations, without concern for pupil and expansion order. METHODS: Corneal topography maps (TOMEY, Inc, Nagoya, Japan) from 30 normal corneas were collected, and the corneal wave front error was analyzed by Zernike polynomial decomposition into s

Rotation of a toric intraocular lens from neodymium:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

A 77-year-old man had cataract surgery in the left eye in March 2017. A toric intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted because of astigmatism. The postoperative meridian of the IOL was located nearly exactly in the planned meridian, which was controlled 1 week later with ray-tracing aberrometry (iTrace) and the smartphone application Axis Assistant. The referring ophthalmologist proceeded directly with a neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy in his own office, after which the meridian of the implanted toric IOL was rotated more than 115 degrees. The rotation of the IOL was likely the
