OBJECTIVES: This study reassesses the dominant "pad deficit" explanation for period-related school absenteeism in Ghana by identifying the key factors driving girls' absence during menstruation and assessing perceptions of parents and teachers on the national free sanitary pad policy.
METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining survey data from over 1,300 adolescent school girls with focus group discussions involving teachers and parents. Descriptive statistics and a supplementary ordered logistic regression model were used to analyze the relative importance and independent effe

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, school absenteeism has remained severely elevated, with significant repercussions for educational and social-emotional outcomes. In order to increase understanding of factors contributing to absenteeism, this study examined the relationship between internalizing behaviors and school attendance and the extent to which that relationship is moderated by age and gender among low-income children living in a community of concentrated poverty (N=145; age range=5-17). Poisson regression models found that internalizing behaviors were significantly associated with school

INTRODUCTION: Long COVID may limit people's ability to carry out daily activities, including work. Little is known about the potential effect of long COVID on work limitations and absenteeism. We describe employment status and characteristics, work limitations, cognitive dysfunction, and sickness absenteeism among adults with and without long COVID.
METHODS: Using data from the cross-sectional 2022 National Health Interview Survey, we estimated the prevalence (95% confidence intervals [CI]) of work-related outcomes by long COVID status among US adults ≥ 18 years (n = 26,270). Among employed a

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of leg ulcers (LUs) increases with age. Nevertheless, a significant number of working-age individuals are affected by hard-to-heal (chronic) wounds that last throughout their adult lives, impacting work capacity and leading to absenteeism, unemployment and subsequent financial burden.
METHOD: A retrospective observational study was carried out between January 2022 and June 2024 at a Portuguese tertiary hospital, which included working-age patients living with LUs. Patients who were unemployed and retired for reasons other than LUs were excluded from the study. Clinic

BACKGROUND: Asthma, affecting 11.6-13.7 % globally, significantly impacts children's education, causing 47.5 % absenteeism, disturbed sleep, and frequent ER visits. These issues, alongside environmental triggers, medication side effects, and socioeconomic factors, hinder academic performance. Racial disparities in healthcare access accentuate the problem, with minorities receiving less preventive care. Family dynamics also play a role, as caregivers often keep children home fearing severe episodes. This review estimates the prevalence of asthma-related absenteeism, acute care needs, preventive

Painful episodes have been identified as one of the most frequent manifestations of sickle cell anemia (hemoglobin HbSS). This retrospective study compared the frequency of hospitalization and the academic performance of two groups of children with HbSS (ages 8 to 18 years) with differing frequencies of pain. A high frequency (HF) group (n = 10) was composed of children who had four or more hospitalizations for pain in the study period; those in the low frequency (LF) group (n = 11) had one or no hospitalizations for pain during the study period. The two groups were matched on age (within 6 mo

BACKGROUND: School absenteeism is closely associated with adolescent mental health problems, yet little is known about the covariation patterns between the short-term, mild attendance fluctuations commonly observed among community adolescents and their psychological distress. This study aimed to combine network analysis with simulated intervention methods to explore the conditional dependence network among absenteeism, depression, and internalizing/externalizing problems, and to preliminarily identify potential intervention targets.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2022 wave of the China Fam

AIM: To study absenteeism among healthcare personnel (HCP) in Greek hospitals from 2020-2021 to 2024-2025.
METHODS: Data were collected prospectively. Multivariable regressions were applied to estimate associations between variables, duration and cause of absenteeism.
RESULTS: We studied 5525 absenteeism episodes with 38,482 days missed (17.8 episodes per 100 HCP; mean duration of absence per episode: 7.0 days). Compared to other seasons, the 2021-2022 season had the highest number of absenteeism episodes per 100 HCP (28.7) and the longest mean weekly duration of absence per 100 HCP (10.6 da

90 adolescents with chronic anxious-depressed school absenteeism underwent inpatient cognitive-behavioral therapy. A strong, highly significant decline of school absenteeism, anxiety and depressive symptoms rated by parents and youngsters was found. Reductions remained stable over a two months follow-up period. A cautious interpretation of the results is important because of the lack of a control condition.

This observational study examined the changes during inpatient cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) of adolescents with chronic anxious-depressive school absenteeism with or without comorbid disruptive symptoms. 147 adolescents (aged 12-18 years) with a specific phobia or other anxiety disorder or a depressive episode or a mixed disorder of conduct and emotions and who had completely ceased to attend school or showed irregular school attendance underwent an inpatient cognitive-behavioral treatment. A further 16 patients aborted the treatment during the first day and were not included in the an

BACKGROUND: Relatively few studies have quantified the amount of school missed due to poor menstrual health, or the impact of poor menstrual health on examination performance.
METHODS: We conducted secondary observational analyses from data nested within a cluster-randomised trial of a menstrual health intervention in 60 Ugandan secondary schools (The trial is registered as ISRCTN45461276). We used baseline data from trial participants in both arms, and endline data from the control arm participants. School absenteeism was estimated as the self-reported number of days absent due to menstruati

Students who frequently miss school are at greater risk for academic difficulty. High levels of absenteeism as early as kindergarten have been associated with long-term consequences, such as low reading proficiency in Grade 3 and low academic achievement in Grade 5, both of which have been associated with lower rates of high school graduation and enrollment in post-secondary education. The prevalence of school absenteeism has increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic and there have been sustained shifts in student attendance rates from kindergarten to Grade 12 since 2020. The goals o

BACKGROUND: The health risks that usually affect teachers are already known; however, the predictors of health related absenteeism, presenteeism, and sick leave have not yet been fully described.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the predictors of health-related absenteeism, presenteeism, and sick leave among elementary school teachers.
METHODS: This study involved a probabilistic sample of 519 Brazilian elementary school teachers. The outcomes were days of health-related absenteeism, presenteeism, and sick leave in the previous 12 months. Work-place and individual factors were the independent variables

BACKGROUND: The impact of the simultaneous circulation of COVID-19 and seasonal influenza, termed the "Twindemic," on absenteeism among healthcare workers (HCWs), particularly those with children, remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations of living with school-aged children with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza infections and the risk of absenteeism due to own- or family-related COVID-19 or influenza events among HCWs during the Twindemic.
METHODS: This prospective study followed 1473 HCWs at a tertiary hospital in Tokyo from December 2023 to March 2024. We tracked the inc

BackgroundSpine pain is a leading cause of functional disability and work absenteeism globally. Multiple prognostic factors influencing return-to-work(RTW) among people with spine pain are reported from high-income-countries. However, findings from high-income-countries with 16 percent world's population, cannot be extrapolated to low-middle-income countries (LMICs) which constitutes 84 percent world's population. Hence, paucity of evidence from LMICs motivated present literature review.ObjectiveTo study work absenteeism and RTW profile of people with spine pain in LMICs, including intrinsic a

School attendance or completion is important for adolescents' development. Adolescents who drop out or are regularly absent from school are at higher risk of adverse sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes. However, there is little evidence evaluating SRH service coverage among adolescents in and out of school. In the context of a large-scale combination HIV and pregnancy prevention intervention funded by the Global Fund, we compared the SRH intervention coverage and SRH risks among adolescent girls who dropped out of school with those who were still in school or who had completed grade

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of literature identifying factors that influence the back and neck pain (BNP)-workplace absenteeism relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between BNP and workplace absenteeism and potential mediating variables in a large sample of the US population.
METHODS: Nationally representative data collected in 2019 from the RAND American Life Panel (ALP) were used for this retrospective study. Workplace absenteeism was defined as the number of days of absence in the past 12 months for health-related reasons (count variable), while BNP corr
