Investigation of the effect of different surface treatments for preventing detachment of polyetheretherketone and titanium attachment matrix housings in overdentures: An in vitro study.

AIM: The attachment matrix housing (AMH) of implant overdentures is not chemically bonded with acrylic resins. Therefore, AMH may lose due to insertion and removal forces. This study aims to investigate the effects of different surface treatments to reduce the detachment of AMH and to compare the adhesion of the AMH used in implant-supported overdentures made of different materials with the reline acrylic resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Titanium and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) AMHs were separated into four surface treatment groups; no treatment, airborne-particle abrasion (APA) applied, univers

Effect of accelerated aging on the microhardness and color stability of flexible resins for dentures.

Acrylic resins have been widely used due to their acceptable esthetics and desirable characteristics such as easy handling, good thermal conductivity, low permeability to oral fluids and color stability. Flexible resins were introduced on the market as an alternative to the use of conventional acrylic resins in the construction of complete and partial removable dentures. Although these resins present advantages in terms of esthetics and comfort, studies assessing chromatic and microhardness alterations of these materials are still scarce in the related literature. The aim of this study was to

Perceived side effects of biomaterials in prosthetic dentistry.

The present questionnaire survey of side effects of biomaterials in prosthodontics had a response rate of 64%. There were occupational health problems associated with a variety of dental materials, especially acrylic resins, eugenol-containing materials, and elastomer impression materials. Most reactions were mild to moderate dematoses of the fingers or hands, but one prosthodontist had to cease practice due to a severe allergic reaction to acrylic resin materials. Of the respondents, 8% had experienced reactions to latex gloves. Nondermatologic reactions seemed to be transient, affecting the

The use of methylmethacrylate in the fixation of mandibular fractures in dogs. Experimental results.

The efficacy of self-curing acrylic resin in the fixation of fractured mandibles was studied in eight adult mongrel dogs. Three dogs were killed at 1 month, two at 3 months, and three at 6 months after insertion of the resin. Roentgenograms taken after operation and after the dogs had been put to death demonstrated satisfactory fracture reduction and bony healing. The retentive grooves appeared larger on the postmortem roentgenograms, apparently from fibrous tissue that formed between the acrylic resin and the bone. Sections through the groove and fracture site did not show any fibrocartilage

The use of a stent-resin-bonded splint combination to stabilize a free gingival autograft.

This article describes the use of a resin-bonded retainer in combination with an acrylic resin stent to stabilize a free gingival graft. This retainer also prevents migration of muscle attachment after surgery to deepen a section of the vestibule where the oral mucosa closely approached the gingival margin. The acrylic resin stent is attached to the resin-bonded retainer by means of an integrally cast metal framework. After surgery, the retainer is attached to the occlusal two thirds of the buccal surfaces of maxillary molar teeth by using the acid-etched resin bonding technique. The stent eff

Allergic contact dermatitis due to urethane acrylate in ultraviolet cured inks.

Seven workers exposed to ultraviolet printing inks developed contact dermatitis. Six cases were allergic and one irritant. A urethane acrylate resin accounted for five cases of sensitisation, one of which was also sensitive to pentaerythritol triacrylate and another also to an epoxy acrylate resin. One instance of allergy to trimethylpropane triacrylate accounted for the sixth case of contact dermatitis in this group of workers. An irritant reaction is presumed to account for the dermatitis in the individual not proved to have cutaneous allergy by patch tests. In this instance trimethylpropane

The effect of different chemical surface treatments of denture teeth on shear bond strength: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The development of better cross linked acrylic resin teeth has solved the problems related to wearing and discoloration of acrylic teeth. The same cross linking at ridge lap region acts as a double edge sword as it weakens the bond between denture base and tooth. AIM OF STUDY: The purpose of study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment on the bond strength of resin teeth to denture base resin using monomethyl methacrylate monomer and dichloromethane with no surface treatment acting as control. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Denture base cylinder samples in wax (n=180) were made wi

A novel acrylic orthodontic device for treatment of linguoverted mandibular canine teeth in small dogs.

Linguoverted mandibular canine teeth (LMC) is a common malocclusion in dogs. Several inclined bite-plane techniques using acrylic resin have been introduced to correct LMC in dogs. Although these techniques have suggested modifications to overcome shortcomings, there are still limitations; e.g., high technical sensitivity, as the viscous acrylic resin must still be fabricated in the oral cavity. The authors developed a novel method for small-breed dogs that uses a doughy acrylic resin form to achieve an easy intraoral design and extraoral fabrication. Eight small-breed dogs were presented to e

Component failure in removable partial dentures for patients with severe hypodontia.

Removable partial dentures (RPDs) are frequently used in the treatment of severe hypodontia. The failure rates and modes of failure of 138 such prostheses incorporating acrylic resin onlays were assessed in a retrospective survey. Failures primarily occurred either early or late in the life of the prostheses. Particular problems identified were the low wear resistance of acrylic resin onlays and poor fixation of resin components to metal bases, especially when space was limited.
