Role of fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis of eyelid sebaceous carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma of the ocular adnexa is a malignant neoplasm which can exhibit aggressive local behavior and can metastasize to regional lymph nodes and distant organs. The neoplasm is known to masquerade as other benign and less malignant lesions, resulting in delay in diagnosis and relative high morbidity and mortality. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of recurrent upper eyelid nodules treated elsewhere as chalazion was done. Cytological smears were suggestive of malignancy. Subsequently histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of sebaceous gland carcinoma. Eyelid reconstruction was

Sebaceous carcinoma of the buccal mucosa: A rare entity with comprehensive review of literature.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) typically arises in the periocular region but on rare occasions can present within the oral cavity, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This report describes a 50-year-old male who developed a progressively enlarging ulcero-proliferative lesion in the right buccal mucosa, initially misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. Histopathological re-evaluation, supported by immunohistochemistry (CK5/6, p63, and epithelial membrane antigen positivity), established the diagnosis of SC, confirming sebaceous differentiation. Despite its atypical location, the tumor beha

An Unusual Case of Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma Mimicking Recurrent Chalazion in a Young Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Chalazion is a common eyelid lesion usually treated conservatively or with minor surgical interventions, such as incision and curettage or intralesional steroid injections. However, recurrent or atypical chalazion in a young adult patient warrants further investigation to exclude malignant conditions such as sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC). CASE: Here an unusual case of SGC presenting with a recurrent chalazion in a young adult patient is reported, which was diagnosed by a biopsy for histopathological examination. OBSERVATION: Histopathology revealed sebaceous gland carcinoma.

Sebaceous Carcinoma of the Ocular Region: The 2014 Professor Winifred Mao Lecture.

Sebaceous carcinoma is a malignancy arising in the periocular region that can lead to blindness and tumor-related metastases. This study is a review of published literature and personal experience. This malignancy can arise from the sebaceous units in the tarsus (meibomian glands), in association with the cilia (Zeis glands), in the brow, and in the caruncle. There is a tendency for diffuse intraepithelial growth (pagetoid spread) that can be clinically invisible. Detection before lymph node metastasis is critical. This malignancy often masquerades as chronic unilateral conjunctivitis or bleph

Muir-Torre syndrome in a patient with advanced duodenal carcinoma.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by sebaceous neoplasms and visceral malignancies and is regarded as a phenotypic variant of Lynch syndrome. Although colorectal and genitourinary cancers are the most common visceral malignancies in MTS, duodenal cancer is extremely rare. We report a case of advanced duodenal cancer associated with MTS treated with multidisciplinary therapy. A 62-year-old man with a history of multiple colorectal cancers and sebaceous carcinomas presented with vomiting and epigastric pain. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a

Disfiguring facial pyoderma vegetans with an excellent outcome.

We describe a case of disfiguring facial pyoderma vegetans in order to highlight the challenges in managing this rare skin condition and review the literature.A 54-year-old woman presented to dermatology clinic with a 3-month history of a left-sided facial lesion, which had been treated as an infected sebaceous cyst. The lesion had dramatically increased in size in the weeks prior to presentation. There was a history of Crohn's disease and ileal adenocarcinoma, both of which were in remission. A clinical diagnosis of pyoderma vegetans was made and the patient responded well to immunosuppressiv

Sebaceous carcinoma of the vulva.

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare tumor usually found on the head and neck. A 78 year old Japanese female who had an asymptomatic vulvar tumor is reported here. The excised specimen showed SC with metastasis to the inguinal lymph nodes. This is the fourth reported case of SC arising from female genitalia, and the second case that apparently arose from the labia minora. Contrary to the previously reported cases, tumor cells in the present case had abundant glycogen. Thus, differential diagnosis of SC from metastatic renal cell carcinoma is difficult morphologically because both of

Prevalence of human papillomavirus in eyelid carcinoma among Koreans: a clinicopathological study.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been detected in eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and detection rates greatly varied across studies. This study aimed to investigate the presence of HPV in eyelid SGC and SCC among Koreans and its correlation with clinicopathological characteristics. METHODS: Surgically resected eyelid samples diagnosed as SGC or SCC from January 1999 to June 2011 were identified from the pathology database of three referral centres in Korea. Clinicopathological information including origin (skin vs. tarsal conjunctiva) and tr

Primary sebaceous carcinoma of the tongue.

Sebaceous carcinoma is the rarest type of oral malignancies. We report a case of primary sebaceous carcinoma of the tongue. Systemic imaging studies revealed that the patient had a T2N2cM0 (International Union Against Cancer guidelines) primary lingual tumor. Histopathological examination revealed neoplastic sebocytic and basaloid cells, and Sudan III staining and electron microscopy revealed intracytoplasmic lipid droplets. The neoplastic cells stained positive for adipophilin; epithelial membrane antigen; epithelial antigen; and cytokeratins 7, 8, and 15, but negative for cytokeratins 5/6, 1

Immunohistochemical expression of survivin in cutaneous sebaceous lesions.

BACKGROUND: Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis family of proteins implicated in the inhibition of apoptosis and cell cycle control, both crucial in the progression to malignancy. Survivin overexpression has been demonstrated in numerous malignancies including cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. To date, there are no studies evaluating the expression of survivin in sebaceous neoplasms. METHODS: Immunohistochemical expression of survivin was evaluated in a total of 20 extraocular sebaceous neoplasms: sebaceous hyperplasia (SH, 8), sebaceous adenoma (SA, 8), and sebac

Prognostic Significance of Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes and High-Risk Human Papillomavirus in Ocular Sebaceous Carcinoma: A Comprehensive Analysis.

High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are known to have prognostic significance in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. However, their significance in ocular sebaceous carcinoma (OSC) remains unverified because of the rarity of the condition. This study aimed to investigate the association between clinicopathologic features, biomarkers, and hrHPV infection and their potential to predict prognosis in OSC patients. We analyzed the clinicopathologic features of 81 OSC patients from Asan Medical Center between 2000 and 2022. Seventeen biomarkers and hrH

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma arising within a nevus sebaceus.

Nevus sebaceus (NS)(organoid nevus) is a benign follicular neoplasm that commonly occurs on the scalp, face, or neck. With time, it may give rise to benign or malignant tumors such as trichoblastoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Rarely, other types of neoplasms may develop. We present a 76-year-old woman with several trichoblastomas as well as a primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma arising within a preexisting NS that was treated with frozen section excision.

An illustrative case of Muir-Torre syndrome: contribution of immunohistochemical analysis in identifying indicator sebaceous lesions.

BACKGROUND: Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by the association of at least 1 cutaneous sebaceous tumor and 1 internal malignancy, often arising in the gastrointestinal tract. It is secondary to germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes, mainly MLH-1 and MSH-2. OBSERVATIONS: We report the case of a 54-year-old man with a 2-year history of skin-colored papules clinically reminiscent of large sebaceous hyperplasias on the nose and back, but histologically diagnosed as sebaceous adenomas and epitheliomas. His family history was positive for co

Metastatic Adenocarcinoma of the Lung Presenting as a Soft Tissue Mass.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with more than 230,000 new cases, and approximately 150,000 deaths estimated for 2018. Lung cancer most commonly metastasizes to the brain, liver, lungs, bone, and adrenal system; however, there have been several cases of spread to soft tissues, with an incidence rate of approximately 0.75-9%. The objective of this case report is to highlight an unusual presentation of metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lung. In this case report, patient presented with a 3 × 3 cm soft tissue mass on the back. The mass was slowly growing but h

Carcinoma of the perianal gland and associated structures in 1,2-dimethylhydrazine treated mice.

Male C57BL/Icrf alpha t mice receiving long courses of weekly subcutaneous injections of 8.25 or 12.5 mg/kg, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) developed perianal carcinomas as well as tumours at other sites. Tumours of the perianal gland or its associated hair root sheath and overlying skin included sebaceous gland adenocarcinomas, often with squamous metaplasia, analogous to those in the rat ear, and dysplasia, polyp formation and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). Of 152 mice treated, 88 remained after 30 injections, and 10 out of a total of 14 tumours developed after 30 treatments. Perianal SCC with

Sebaceous gland carcinoma of the ocular adnexa - variability in clinical and histological appearance with analysis of immunohistochemical staining patterns.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the characteristics of sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) of the ocular adnexae, which is due to a high variability in clinical, histological and immunohistochemical characteristics often challenging to diagnose. METHODS: Records of six patients with SGC were reviewed, who underwent surgical excision and who were histologically diagnosed with SGC. For comparison, there were specimens from four patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and four patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Histological and immunohistochemical analysis included stain

Establishment and Characterization of Three Human Ocular Adnexal Sebaceous Carcinoma Cell Lines.

Ocular adnexal sebaceous carcinoma (SebCA) represents one of the most clinically problematic periocular tumors, often requiring aggressive surgical resection. The pathobiology of this tumor remains poorly understood, and few models exist that are suitable for preclinical testing. The aim of this study was to establish new cell lines to serve as models for pathobiological and drug testing. With patient consent, freshly resected tumor tissue was cultured using conditional reprogramming cell conditions. Standard techniques were used to characterize the cell lines in terms of overall growth, clono
