Active ingredients of substance use-focused self-help groups.

AIMS AND METHODS: This paper provides an overview of some of the probable active ingredients of self-help groups in light of four related theories that identify common social processes that appear to underlie effective psychosocial treatments for and continuing remission from these disorders. RESULTS: Social control theory specifies active ingredients such as bonding, goal direction and structure; social learning theory specifies the importance of norms and role models, behavioral economics and behavioral choice theory emphasizes involvement in rewarding activities other than substance use, a

Acute ethanol intoxication after consumption of hairspray.

A 61-year-old woman with a history of alcohol dependence came to the emergency department with ethanol intoxication. Her serum ethanol concentration was 322 mg/dl. When questioned, she admitted to consuming a 14-oz bottle of hairspray mixed with water because of its denatured alcohol content. The woman had used nonbeverage sources of alcohol on a regular basis for a number of years after learning of the practice from fellow attendees of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Her primary reason for this behavior was to hide her continued alcohol abuse from her family. She consumed hairspray that contai

Pharmacologic treatment of chronic alcoholism.

Of the many drug therapies mentioned in this review, only the alcohol-sensitizing drugs have current therapeutic applications in primary alcoholics. When alcohol abuse occurs in association with anxiety, depression, or schizophrenia, treatment with the anxiolytic, antidepressant, and neuroleptic drugs, respectively, may facilitate the alcoholic's ability to participate in other programs. Patients should receive drugs that are appropriate to treatment goals as well as to their psychosocial status. Even if a drug therapy is shown to be efficacious under controlled experimental conditions, its ef

Nutritionists' Practices and Knowledge about the Risks of Alcohol Consumption during Pregnancy: An Israeli Survey.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are lifelong disabilities and the leading preventable cause of developmental disabilities. Antenatal care providers may influence pregnant women's dietary practices and their awareness of the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. This study aimed to assess nutritionists' self-reported knowledge about the risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, professional practices in this respect, and self-perceived competence to assess and guide women about alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Israel. A sample of 526 professional nutritionists complet

Substance use among adolescents with diabetes mellitus: preliminary findings.

Alcohol and drug use frequency was assessed by means of an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire in 79 diabetic adolescents who attended a diabetic sleep away camp. More than half of the participants reported using tobacco or alcohol at least once and 12%-25% reported greater that five times use in their lifetime. The overall frequency of drug and alcohol use was less than the general adolescent population. A modified Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) was used to evaluate abnormal drinking patterns, and 40%-50% of 12- and 16-year-old campers had an abnormal score, indicating that alm

Limits of usual biochemical alcohol markers in cord blood at term: a fetal/maternal population-based study.

BACKGROUND: After maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy, many neonates affected by less apparent forms of fetal alcohol syndrome disorder (FASD) do not receive proper diagnosis or treatment. There is thus a need for laboratory markers for early detection of alcohol-exposed neonates. The aim of our study was to assess the efficiency of the usual alcohol biomarkers measured in cord blood to identify alcohol-exposed neonates immediately after birth. METHODS: A 1-year study was conducted in the labor wards of the maternity units of the Auvergne, Central France at the time of term delivery

Strong predictors for alcohol recidivism after liver transplantation: non-acceptance of the alcohol problem and abstinence of <3 months.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol-toxic liver cirrhosis (ALC) is one of the main indications for liver transplantation (LT). The aim of the study is to define predictors for alcohol recidivism and to identify the outcome and quality of life of such patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From March 2003 to July 2009, 226 patients underwent LT in our centre. In 53% liver cirrhosis was caused by alcohol abuse (sole/cofactor). Outcome and alcohol recidivism were assessed using patients' records, laboratory tests and interviews (patient, family members and family doctor). Furthermore, patients received an SF-36 quality

Patient characteristics associated with their level of twelve-step attendance prior to entry into treatment for substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: The availability of the fellowships of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous in community settings is extensive and patients admitted to treatment programs for substance use disorder may therefore have previously attended meetings of these two Twelve Step (TS) programs. Data on such prior attendance and related clinical findings, however, are not typically available. They can, however, be relevant to how ensuing treatment is planned. We therefore undertook this study to ascertain the feasibility of evaluating how the level of TS attendance prior to treatment entry can be eva

Review of research on pathological gambling.

The literature including a number of review articles was examined for answers to the questions, have distinctive personality test profiles of pathological gamblers been identified, do pathological gamblers have control over their behavior, have studies of alcoholism and addiction increased understanding of compulsive gambling, and has psychotherapy or Gamblers Anonymous been successful for them? Much more information is needed to build on what research on these questions has yielded.

Are preoperative patterns of alcohol consumption predictive of relapse after liver transplantation for alcoholic liver disease?

Predictive factors for alcoholic relapse after liver transplantation (LT) performed for alcoholic liver disease (ALD) have been assessed in numerous studies, often with contradictory results. The aim of the study was to assess pretransplantation alcohol consumption characteristics on alcoholic relapse after LT. Patients transplanted for ALD for at least 6 months were included. An anonymous questionnaire assessed socio-demographic characteristics, medical history, and alcohol consumption before and after LT. Relapse was defined as any alcohol use after LT. Severe relapse was defined by heavy dr

Social anxiety and peer helping in adolescent addiction treatment.

BACKGROUND: The developmental need to fit in may lead to higher alcohol and other drug use among socially anxious youths which exacerbates the drink/trouble cycle. In treatment, youths with social anxiety disorder (SAD) may avoid participating in therapeutic activities with risk of negative peer appraisal. Peer-helping is a low-intensity, social activity in the 12-step program associated with greater abstinence among treatment-seeking adults. This study examined the influence of SAD on clinical severity at intake, peer-helping during treatment, and outcomes in a large sample of adolescents cou

The Exploration of Cannabis Beverage Substitution for Alcohol: A Novel Harm Reduction Strategy.

Alcohol consumption is associated with nearly 200 health conditions. As cannabis-infused beverages emerge in the legal market, their potential as a substitute for alcohol is of growing interest. This study investigates whether cannabis beverages may reduce alcohol use.A total of 438 anonymous adults who used cannabis in the past year completed a survey including cannabis use and alcohol consumption items from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Chi-square and t-tests compared alcohol use between cannabis beverage users and non-users, and before vs. after cannabis beverage i

Beyond Stigma-Integrating Neurobiology, Genetics, and Awareness Integration Theory in Addiction Recovery.

Addiction continues to be heavily stigmatized due to lingering misconceptions that frame substance use as a moral failing rather than a treatable neurobiological disorder. This stigma, when internalized, intensifies shame and obstructs recovery. Awareness Integration Theory, a multidisciplinary therapeutic model, addresses these internalized beliefs by identifying and integrating fragmented aspects of the self across thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and promotes self-awareness, emotional regulation, and cognitive restructuring, critical components in reducing shame and fostering resilience. Addressing harmful alcohol use in primary care in Colombia: Understanding the sociocultural context.

Harmful alcohol use is a public health problem worldwide, contributing to an estimated 5.1% of the global burden of illness. Screening and addressing at-risk drinking in primary care settings is an empirically supported health care intervention strategy to help reduce the burden of alcohol-use problems. In preparation for introducing screening and treatment for at-risk drinking in primary care clinics in Colombia, we conducted interviews with clinicians, clinic administrators, patients, and participants in Alcoholics Anonymous. Interviews were conducted within the framework of the Detección y

Long term Suboxone™ emotional reactivity as measured by automatic detection in speech.

Addictions to illicit drugs are among the nation's most critical public health and societal problems. The current opioid prescription epidemic and the need for buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone®; SUBX) as an opioid maintenance substance, and its growing street diversion provided impetus to determine affective states ("true ground emotionality") in long-term SUBX patients. Toward the goal of effective monitoring, we utilized emotion-detection in speech as a measure of "true" emotionality in 36 SUBX patients compared to 44 individuals from the general population (GP) and 33 members of Alcoholics

Alcohol use disorder with comorbid anxiety disorder: a case report and focused literature review.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and anxiety disorders (AnxD) are prevalent health concerns in clinical practice which frequently co-occur (AUD-AnxD) and compound one another. Concurrent AUD-AnxD poses a challenge for clinical management as approaches to treatment of one disorder may be ineffective or potentially counterproductive for the other disorder. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a middle-aged man with anxiety disorder, AUD, chronic pain, and gamma-hydroxybutyrate use in context of tapering prescribed benzodiazepines who experienced severe alcohol withdrawal episodes dur

A comparison of a specialist women's alcohol and other drug treatment service with two traditional mixed-sex services: client characteristics and treatment outcome.

Eighty subjects from a specialist women's service (SWS) and eighty subjects from two traditional mixed-sex treatment services (TMS) were recruited to a comparative, longitudinal study of changes in alcohol and other drug associated problems. Both the SWS and the TMS programs were principally based on the traditional disease model and the 12-step philosophy but the SWS employed only female staff and provided residential childcare. The SWS succeeded in attracting significantly more lesbian women, women with dependent children, women sexually abused in childhood and with a maternal history of sub
