Right ventricular (RV) failure following surgical repair of congenital heart disease affects survival. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte (hiPS-CM) sheet transplantation ameliorated left ventricular dysfunction in preclinical studies, indicating its efficacy in RV failure in congenital heart disease. This study aimed to evaluate whether hiPS-CMs could improve RV function in rats with pressure-overloaded RV failure. F344/NJcl-rnu/rnu rats underwent pulmonary artery banding (PAB) via left thoracotomy. Four weeks after PAB, hiPS-CM patch transplantation to the RV was perfor

Transgenic and toxic models of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are widely used to study the pathophysiology of PAH and to investigate potential therapies. Given the expense and time involved in creating animal models of disease, it is critical that researchers have tools to accurately assess phenotypic expression of disease. Right ventricular dysfunction is the major manifestation of pulmonary hypertension. Echocardiography is the mainstay of the noninvasive assessment of right ventricular function in rodent models and has the advantage of clear translation to humans in whom the same too

In a context in which known and potential zoonoses are emerging (simian retrovirus infections, SRAS, West Nile, H5N1 avian influenza, etc.), French army veterinarians have been tasked with assessing epidemiological risks related to animals in proximity with troops, particularly during foreign operations. They have already completed surveys of more than 70 infections (toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis, rickettiosis, leptospirosis, Q fever, hepatitis E, Rift valley fever, etc.). The strategy consists of detecting pathogenic agents ("the right sample, at the right time, and kept in the right condition

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to find whether the use of hyaluronidase reduces capsule formation.
METHODS: Ten New Zealand White rabbits were used. Eight pockets were created using an aseptic technique, four on the right side and four on the left side, along the vertebral column of every animal. One piece of silicone from a silicone block was inserted inside every pocket. The dimensions of each piece were 3.5 × 2 × 1.5 cm. In every pocket on the right side of each animal we placed 0.5 ml of hyaluronidase solution. The animals were sacrificed 5 months postoperatively. Capsule forma

The continuous release of nitric oxide (NO) is required to maintain basal cerebrovascular tone. Oxyhemoglobin, a putative spasmogen, rapidly binds NO, implicating loss of NO in the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). If vasospasm is mediated by depletion of NO in the vessel wall, it should be reversible by replacement with NO. To investigate this hypothesis, the authors placed blood clots around the right middle cerebral artery (RMCA) of four cynomolgus monkeys; four unoperated animals served as controls. Arteriography was performed before and 7 days after s

Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is a strong predictor of outcome in heart failure and is a key determinant of exercise capacity. Despite these crucial findings, the RV remains understudied in the clinical, experimental, and computer modelling literature. This review outlines how recent advances in using computer modelling and cardiac imaging synergistically help to understand RV function in health and disease. We begin by highlighting the complexity of interactions that make modelling the RV both challenging and necessary, and then summarize the multiscale modelling approaches used to date

Immunohistochemical investigations of the guinea pig vestibular system, using a specific antibody to the inducible isoform of NO-synthase (iNOS/NOS II), have been performed 3 weeks after surgical closure of the right endolymphatic duct (n = 7). Endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) of the right temporal bone became evident by excavation of the Reissner's membrane in all seven animals. Those animals revealed iNOS-expression in ganglion cells, in the wall of blood vessels and in nerve fibers of the right vestibular system, while the corresponding left temporal bones and temporal bones of non-operated cont

The relationship of the early lymphatic pathophysiological alterations with those of tissue inflammatory and cellular responses in the inguinal lymph nodes of Brugia malayi-infected rhesus monkeys was examined. Each of five animals was inoculated subcutaneously in the right calf with 200 third stage larvae (L3) and 5 weeks later, before the onset of patency [10 to 12 weeks postinoculation (PI)], their right inguinal nodes began to show signs of enlargement, becoming most prominent between weeks 10 to 16 PI. Histopathologically, the right nodes had eosinophilic lymphadenitis, lymphoid hyperplas

Twenty large white pigs underwent normothermic right ventricular bypass, pulmonary artery valve excision and right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction using a synthetic material (Mitrathane). The animals were divided in two groups (ten for each group) for the RVOT reconstruction model: Group I with a composite monocusp patch (with a new design geometrically related to pulmonary artery circumference) and Group II without a valve mechanism. Four early postoperative deaths occurred in Group I (unrelated to monocusp patch function) and seven in Group II (due to acute right ventricular

Climate change is one of the major global health threats to the world's population. It is brought on by global warming due in large part to increasing levels of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity, including burning fossil fuels (carbon dioxide), animal husbandry (methane from manure), industry emissions (ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide), vehicle/factory exhaust, and chlorofluorocarbon aerosols that trap extra heat in the earth's atmosphere. Resulting extremes of weather give rise to wildfires, air pollution, changes in ecology, and floods. These in turn result in displacemen

Decreased endothelium-derived relaxing factor, nitric oxide (NO), in the arterial wall has been hypothesized to be a potential cause of cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The authors sought to determine whether intracarotid infusions of newly developed NO-donating compounds (NONOates) could reverse vasospasm or prevent the occurrence of cerebral vasospasm in a primate model of SAH. Twenty-one cynomolgus monkeys were studied in two experimental settings. In an acute infusion experiment, saline or NONOate was infused intracarotidly in four normal monkeys and in four monk

Exercise is associated with unequivocal health benefits and results in many structural and functional changes of the myocardium that enhance performance and prevent heart failure. However, intense exercise also presents a significant hemodynamic challenge in which the right-sided heart chambers are exposed to a disproportionate increase in afterload and wall stress that can manifest as myocardial fatigue or even damage if intense exercise is sustained for prolonged periods. This review focuses on the physiological factors that result in a disproportionate load on the right ventricle during exe

Background The right ventricle exposed to chronic pressure overload exhibits hypertrophy and decompensates when exposed to stress. We hypothesize that impaired ability to increase myocardial oxidative flux through pyruvate dehydrogenase leads to hypertrophied right ventricular (RV) dysfunction when exposed to hemodynamic stress, and pyruvate dehydrogenase stimulation can improve RV function. Methods and Results Infant male Yorkshire piglets (13.5±0.6 kg weight, n=19) were used to assess substrate fractional contribution to the citric acid cycle after sustained pulmonary artery banding (PAB). Recent observations of wingless animals, including jumping nematodes, springtails, insects, and wingless vertebrates like geckos, snakes, and salamanders, have shown that their adaptations and body morphing are essential for rapid self-righting and controlled landing. These skills can reduce the risk of physical damage during collision, minimize recoil during landing, and allow for a quick escape response to minimize predation risk. The size, mass distribution, and speed of an animal determine its self-righting method, with larger animals depending on the conservation of angular momentum and s

Extracorporeal shock waves generated with an electromagnetic lithotriptor of the second generation were administered to the gallbladder or bile ducts of 24 domestic piglets. In six animals, fresh human cholesterol gallstones were implanted into the gallbladder two weeks before shock wave administration. Treatment with 3,000 shock waves resulted in fragmentation of the majority of the gallstones in all six animals. In the other animals, 3,000 shock waves (n = 12) or 6,000 shock waves (n = 6) were directed at the gallbladder or the bile ducts without previous stone implantation. Twelve of all 24

The right ventricle (RV) is composed of a free wall containing a wrap-around circumferential muscle at its base and a septum composed of helical fibers that are oblique and cross each other at 60° angles. This structure is defined by the helical ventricular myocardial band and defines RV function because the wrap-around transverse fibers constrict or compress to cause the bellows motion responsible for 20% of RV output, whereas the oblique fibers determine shortening and lengthening that produces 80% of RV systolic function. Clinical shortening is quantified by tricuspid annular plane systolic

Right ventricular (RV) failure is a commonly encountered problem in patients with congenital heart disease but can also be a consequence of left ventricular disease, primary pulmonary hypertension, or RV-specific cardiomyopathies. Improved survival of the aforementioned pathologies has led to increasing numbers of patients suffering from RV dysfunction, making it a key contributor to morbidity and mortality in this population. Currently available therapies for heart failure were developed for the left ventricle (LV), and there is clear evidence that LV-specific strategies are insufficient or i

Survival in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is closely related to right ventricular (RV) function. Although pulmonary load is an important determinant of RV systolic function in PAH, there remains a significant variability in RV adaptation to pulmonary hypertension. In this report, the authors discuss the emerging concepts of right heart pathobiology in PAH. More specifically, the discussion focuses on the following questions. 1) How is right heart failure syndrome best defined? 2) What are the underlying molecular mechanisms of the failing right ventricle in PAH? 3) How ar

Oxytocin has been shown to be important for social behavior and emotional attachments in early life and may also mediate effects of early experiences on social motivation in adulthood. In animal models, early maternal separation results in alterations in the oxytocin system, with effects on sexual, maternal, and stress reactivity behaviors in adulthood. Studies of children experiencing parental divorce find effects on mood disorders, substance abuse, and other behaviors in adulthood. Here, we examine the effect of divorce on adult urine oxytocin levels. To stimulate oxytocin release, participa
