Background: Bitot's spots, defined as white foamy triangular or round-shaped spots with the base located at the temporal limbus and the apex towards the lateral canthus, were initially associated with vitamin A deficiency (VAD). More recently, Bitot's spots were also described in patients with normal vitamin A levels, associated with aniridia, dry-eye syndrome and post-thermal or chemical injury, as well as the usage of benzalkonium chloride (BAK) eyedrops. The aim of this article is to present the management of Bitot-like spots in a patient with congenital aniridia. Methods: An 8-year-old fem

BACKGROUND: Evaluate outcomes and identify prognostic factors in congenital aniridia.
METHODS: Retrospective interventional case series of patients with congenital aniridia treated between 2012-2020. Ocular examination and surgical details were collected. Surgical failure was defined as disease progression or need for additional surgery for same/related indication. Kaplan-Meier survival curves, Wilcoxon test, and univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed.
RESULTS: Ninety-four patients with congenital aniridia presented at median 19.0 years. Two-thirds of patients

BACKGROUND: Traumatic aniridia has been documented in eyes with a history of cataract extraction through a clear corneal wound. The proposed hypothesis is that the iris tissue was squeezed out from the corneal wound as it is a relative weak point. However, traumatic aniridia with extensive pigmentation of the episclera has never been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A patient, who has surgical histories of trabeculectomy and cataract surgery many years ago, presented with refractory high intraocular pressure (IOP), almost complete loss of the iris, and diffuse pigmentation of the episclera after

Congenital aniridia is a rare, panocular disorder with a main phenotypic characteristic of a partial or complete absence of the iris existing alongside other ocular morbidities such as cataract, keratopathy, optic nerve and foveal hypoplasia, and nystagmus. The iris abnormality, however, often leads to symptoms such as photophobia, glare, and decreased visual acuity, as well as cosmetic dissatisfaction. Current management options for the iris deficit include colored iris contact lenses, corneal tattooing, and tinted contact lenses. Symptoms arising from small iris defects can be resolved with

BACKGROUND: Globe injuries frequently are the cause of permanent loss of visual function. Especially ruptures of the globe have a 50 times lower chance of achieving a final visual acuity better than 20/200 as compared to contusions of the globe. Besides injury to the retina and choroids, injury of the iris-lens diaphragm plays an important role for visual rehabilitation (10% iris defects and 1% aniridia after blunt trauma). Against this background the surgical results after implantation of aniridia intraocular lenses were investigated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients (41.9+/-19.6 years

Aniridia (iris hypoplasia) is an autosomal dominant congenital disorder of the eye. Mutations in the human aniridia (PAX6) gene have now been identified in many patients from various ethnic groups. In the study reported here we describe PAX6 mutations in one sporadic and five familial cases with aniridia. Of the four different mutations identified, one was identical to a previously reported mutation (C-->T transition at codon 240), and three were novel: two in the glycine-rich region and one in the proline/serine/threonine-rich (PST) region. One PAX6 mutation found in the PST region was associ

A 20-month-old male patient was referred because of severe growth and mental retardation, bilateral glaucoma, hypospadias, and cryptorchidism. Karyotyping revealed a de novo complex three-chromosome rearrangement as well as deletion of band 11p13:46,XY,t(4;7;15)(q212;p14;q26)del(11)(p13p14). Trabeculectomia revealed bilateral aniridia. Surgery on the genitalia revealed male pseudohermaphroditism and bilateral gonadoblastoma. The kidneys were normal. A deficiency in catalase (CAT) activity allowed the regional assignment of the CAT gene to band 11p13.

PURPOSE: Congenital PAX6-aniridia is associated with ocular developmental abnormalities, including photoreceptor specification. We focused on characterizing retinal function by electroretinography (ERG) measurements and evaluated the usefulness of a handheld electrophysiology tool.
METHODS: Patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmological examination including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and full-field ERG measurements using the RETeval system with sensor strip skin electrodes. In addition to International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV) standards, photopic

OBJECTIVE: The perform pre-clinical testing using optical design tools to simulate the optical quality of a smart artificial iris platform encapsulated in a scleral contact lens. These tools allow us to generate aniridia eye models and evaluate different metrics of visual quality and retinal illumination based on the aperture of the artificial iris based on liquid crystals.
METHOD: The OCT imaging technique was used to measure the geometry of the anterior segment in a patient with aniridia and, from these data, the eye model was generated with the Zemax optical design program and specific pro

BACKGROUND: Three groups of iris prostheses can be distinguished for the surgical treatment of iris defects: (1) segmental iris implants, (2) combined iris diaphragm intraocular lenses (IOL) and (3) pure iris implants. Most iris reconstructions are accompanied by aphakia correction with secondary IOL implantation. Although the primary goal is to create a pupil and to improve glare perception, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity, the esthetic result is also a relevant component.
OBJECTIVE: Functional and esthetic results after replacement of an aniridia IOL implant with a custom-made artifi

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between PAX6 genotype and macular morphology in congenital aniridia.
METHODS: The study included 37 participants (15 males) with congenital aniridia (aged 10-72 years) and 58 age-matched normal controls (18 males). DNA was isolated from saliva samples. PAX6 exons, intron/exon junctions, and known regulatory regions were amplified in PCR and sequenced. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) was performed to detect larger deletions or duplications in PAX6 or known cis-regulatory regions. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images

BackgroundAniridia is a severe autosomal dominant panocular disorder associated with pathogenic sequence variants of the PAX6 gene or 11p13 chromosomal aberrations encompassing the coding and/or regulatory regions of the PAX6 gene in a heterozygous state. Patients with aniridia display several ocular anomalies including foveal hypoplasia, cataract, keratopathy, and glaucoma, which can vary in severity and combination.MethodsA cohort of 155 patients from 125 unrelated families with identified point PAX6 pathogenic variants (118 patients) or large chromosomal 11p13 deletions (37 patients) was an

Congenital aniridia is a genetic disorder that manifests as iris hypoplasia and other associated ocular complications. Mutations in the paired box 6 (PAX6) gene are considered the major cause of aniridia. In this study, we identified four mutations exclusively presented in aniridia patients from a four-generation Chinese pedigree, including two single nucleotide substitutions in the 3'UTR of PAX6 (NM_000280.4:c.[*76G>A; *2977C>A]) and two missense mutations in tripartite motif containing 44 (TRIM44, NM_017583.4:c.[191C>A; 463G>A]), which lead to amino acid changes p.S64Y and p.G155R, respectiv

A 76-year-old male presented with post-traumatic aphakia and aniridia in the right eye. The ocular pressure was 24 mmHg despite treatment with mixed eyedrops of timolol 0.5% and dorzolamide, brimonidine 0.1%, and Latananoprost 0.005%. The glaucomatous cup excavation was 0.8. Because it was his only eye, we informed him of the possibility of the Ex-PRESS implant as a possible prevention measure of possible postoperative hypotony. Seidel, hypotony, and choroidal detachment were not observed in the postoperative period. In the first two postoperative months, the pressure remained at 14 mmHg. The

Traumatic aniridia and aphakia occurred in the left eye of a 22-year-old man who had had Artisan (Ophtec) phakic intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Aniridia was probably the result of the relatively large wound used to implant the nonfoldable IOL. Although the eye had severe traumatic damage, vision was recoverable through a 2-stage procedure of vitrectomy and subsequent scleral suture fixation of an iris-diaphragm IOL.
