Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome: a report of four cases in Arabs, and a review of the literature.

We report four Arab patients with idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (IHES). They presented with varied clinical pictures simulating chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), meningioma, peripheral neuropathy, and infective endocarditis (IE). All had significant peripheral and bone marrow eosinophilia, histological confirmation of eosinophilic infiltration of multiple organs, and clinical evidence of multi-organ dysfunction. Extensive laboratory investigations excluded other possible causes of eosinophilia. All were treated with steroids, with complete response

A common variant association study reveals novel susceptibility loci for low HDL-cholesterol levels in ethnic Arabs.

The genetic susceptibility to acquiring low high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LHDLC) levels is not completely elucidated yet. In this study, we performed a common variant association study for harboring this trait in ethnic Arabs. We employed the Affymetrix high-density Axiom Genome-Wide ASI Array (Asian population) providing a coverage of 598,000 single nucleotide variations (SNPs) to genotype 5495 individuals in a two-phase study involving discovery and validation sets of experiments. The rs1800775 [1.31 (1.22-1.42); p = 3.41E-12] in the CETP gene and rs359027 [1.26 (1.16-1.36); p = 2.55

A genome-wide association study reveals susceptibility loci for myocardial infarction/coronary artery disease in Saudi Arabs.

BACKGROUND: Multiple loci have been identified for coronary artery disease (CAD) by genome-wide association studies (GWAS), but no such studies on CAD incidence has been reported yet for any Middle Eastern population. METHODS: In this study, we performed a GWAS for CAD and myocardial infarction (MI) incidence in 5668 Saudis of Arab descent using the Affymetrix Axiom Genotyping platform. RESULTS: We describe SNPs at 16 loci that showed significant (P < 5 × 10(-8)) or suggestive GWAS association (P < 1 × 10(-5)) with CAD or MI, in the ethnic Saudi Arab population. Among the four variants reach

Language status and hemispheric involvement in reading: evidence from trilingual Arabic speakers tested in Arabic, Hebrew, and English.

This study explores the effects of language status on hemispheric involvement in lexical decision. The authors looked at the responses of native Arabic speakers in Arabic (L1 for reading) and in two second languages (L2): Hebrew, which is similar to L1 in morphological structure, and English, which is very different from L1. Two groups of Arabic speakers performed lateralized lexical decision tasks in the three languages, using unilateral presentations and bilateral presentations. These paradigms allowed us to infer both hemispheric specialization and interhemispheric communication in the thre

Linguistic and Cultural Adaptation and Translation Into Arabic of the Dementia Screening Questionnaire for Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities (DSQIID): The DSQIID-A (Arabic).

BACKGROUND: Dementia is highly prevalent globally with a fivefold increased risk in individuals with intellectual disabilities, particularly those with Down syndrome. Culturally and linguistically sensitive screening tools to aid diagnosis and referral are essential to assist this population. The Dementia Screening Questionnaire for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (DSQIID) is the most psychometrically validated assessment tool for this population; however, no validated version for Arabic-speaking populations exists. METHODS: This study employed a structured Delphi Process, translat

Convolutional Neural Network Based Real Time Arabic Speech Recognition to Arabic Braille for Hearing and Visually Impaired.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a group of theoretically inspired computer structures for analyzing and modeling clearly going on texts at one or extra degrees of linguistic evaluation to acquire human-like language processing for quite a few activities and applications. Hearing and visually impaired people are unable to see entirely or have very low vision, as well as being unable to hear completely or having a hard time hearing. It is difficult to get information since both hearing and vision, which are crucial organs for receiving information, are harmed. Hearing and visually impaired

Assessment of Heritage Language Abilities in Bilingual Arabic-German Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder: Comparing a Standardized Test Battery for Spoken Arabic to an Arabic LITMUS Sentence Repetition Task.

PURPOSE: To avoid misdiagnosis with developmental language disorder (DLD) in bilingual children, it is recommended to evaluate both languages. However, unlike their monolingual peers, bilingual children acquire their heritage language under adverse input conditions. Focusing on Levantine Arabic, the study evaluates the clinical utility of a standardized test for Arabic and an Arabic Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings sentence repetition task (LITMUS-SRT) for ruling in/out DLD in bilingual children acquiring Arabic as a heritage language in Germany. Both tools were developed f

A defective splice site at the phenylalanine hydroxylase gene in phenylketonuria and benign hyperphenylalaninemia among Palestinian Arabs.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) and benign hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) result from different combinations of mutations at the locus for phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). While some of these mutations show widespread ethnic distribution, others are unique to specific communities. We report here the first point mutation common among Palestinian Arabs. The mutation (IVS2nt1) involves a dinucleotide substitution (Gg-->Aa) at the donor splice site of intron 2 of the PAH gene and abolishes a recognition site of the restriction enzyme MnlI. IVS2nt1 is associated with two PAH polymorphic haplotypes, 7 and 42. Ho

Hepatic fibrinogen storage disease due to the fibrinogen γ375 Arg → Trp mutation "fibrinogen Aguadilla" is present in Arabs.

The mutation γ375Arg → Trp (fibrinogen Aguadilla) is one of four mutations (Brescia, Aguadilla, Angers, and AI duPont) capable of causing hepatic storage of fibrinogen. It has been observed in four children from the Caribbean, Europe, and Japan, suffering from cryptogenic liver disease. We report the first case of hepatic fibrinogen storage disease in Arabs due to a mutation in the fibrinogen γ-chain gene in a 3-year-old Syrian girl presenting with elevated liver enzymes. The finding of an impressive accumulation of fibrinogen in liver cells raised the suspicion of endoplasmic reticulum storag

Gender identity and role in a pedigree of Arabs with intersex due to 5 alpha reductase-2 deficiency.

Between 1986 and 1995, a pedigree of six Arabs with male pseudohermaphroditism due to 5 alpha reductase-2 deficiency have been identified. All, were raised as girls since birth. At the time of diagnosis, three were post-pubertal, one pubertal and two pre-pubertal. The external genitalia of 'pseudo-vaginal perineoscrotal hypospadias' was identical in these subjects. Although these individuals were a homogeneous group in terms of their sex of upbringing, phenotypic appearance, endocrinological profile and socio-cultural background, the development of the gender identity and role was not uniform

Familial Mediterranean fever (recurrent hereditary polyserositis) in Arabs--a study of 175 patients and review of the literature.

Recurrent hereditary polyserositis (RHP) or familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a chronic inherited illness of obscure aetiology. The disease is characterised by paroxysmal attacks of fever, peritonitis, pleuritis or arthritis, and predominantly affects Sephardic Jews, Arabs, Turks and Armenians. In this study, we report our 11-year experience of 175 Arab patients with this disease. As with other ethnic groups, the most common manifestation (93.7 per cent) was peritonitis. Arthritis (33.7 per cent) and pleurisy (32 per cent) were next in frequency. Adult patients in this series unlike those

Psychometric properties of the Arabic generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-5) in a non-clinical sample of Arabic-speaking adults.

BACKGROUND: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a highly prevalent psychological disorder with a frequent distribution among the general population and in primary care configurations. GAD-5 is one of the many present scales with little research on, but has the potential to orient clinical decisions due to its unique features. Validating a simple and cost-effective tool to assess the GAD in the Arabic-speaking population, primarily residing in the Middle-East and North-Africa (MENA) region, would be highly beneficial. The study aimed to translate GAD-5 into Arabic and evaluate its psychometri

Understanding digital health literacy in the arab world: a study of arab adults with diabetes, hypertension, and rheumatoid arthritis residing in Qatar.

INTRODUCTION: Digital health literacy (DHL)- the ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply health information from digital sources- is increasingly essential for chronic disease self-management. Despite rapid digital health advancements in the Arab region, evidence on DHL among patients with chronic diseases remains limited. Our recent systematic review found no studies addressing DHL in this population. This study aimed to assess DHL and its associated sociodemographic and behavioral factors among Arab adults with diabetes (DM), hypertension (HTN), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Qa

Psychometric properties of the Arabic translation of the Dark Future Scale questionnaire in a non-clinical sample of Arabic-speaking young adults.

BACKGROUND: Through the years, studying negative behaviors of the worldwide population seized the spotlight from many researchers who focused on building scales in order the measure the level of worries, fear and even depression of such stressed individuals. By definition, "Future anxiety" (FA) is fueled by negative thoughts leading to intense fear of unknown future events. The Dark Future scale (DFS) measures the level of anxiety experienced towards the future. Our aim was to examine the psychometric properties of a novel Arabic translation of the DFS. METHODS: A sample of 684 Arabic-speakin
