Changes in cortisol level in saliva following relaxation-activation autoregulative intervention.

The relaxation-activation autoregulative method (RAM) is a psychoregulative procedure characterized by typical autonomic patterns of relaxation and activation phases (blood pressure, electric skin resistance, heart beat, EEG, etc.). They are used as feedback information in the training of autoregulative abilities. RAM has a multidimensional (non-specific) tuning effect which is manifested by changes in the psychophysiological state (emotional tuning, physiological functioning and performance). It has a therapeutical effect on disorders with a psychic pathogenic component, e.g., essential hyper

Treatment of Storm Fears Using Virtual Reality and Progressive Muscle Relaxation.

BACKGROUND: The present study examined the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy for treating individuals with storm fears by comparing a one-session VR exposure treatment with a one-session progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and psychoeducation session. AIMS: It was predicted that there would be a reduction in storm-related fear post-treatment for individuals in both conditions, but that this reduction would be greater for those in the VR exposure condition. It was predicted that improvements would be maintained at 30-day follow-up only for those in the VR exposure condition. M

Long-term effects of a complex behavioral treatment of essential hypertension.

A multidimensional behavioral program was developed for the treatment of essential hypertension. Over a course of 6 weeks, 108 patients of a rehabilitation center were treated with this program consisting of health education, self-monitoring of blood pressure, relaxation techniques, and a social skill training in addition to standard medical treatment alone. Blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors were monitored for a period of 12 months. Blood pressure levels became normotensive in both groups at the end of the 6-week training program. However, the blood pressure reduction in the

A programme for the treatment of severe dental fear. Report of three cases.

This paper describes the use of a sequence of recollection and discussion, training in muscle tone control, dental imagery, audio simulation and graded re-exposure to dental procedures to eliminate a severe fear of dental treatment in three adult female patients. All three patients had abstained from regular dental visits throughout their lives and all were in need of urgent dental treatment when the therapy began. One of the patients also identified in herself other maladaptive behaviour and reported a history of mood disorder as well. The recollections of these patients reveal that the aetio

Reduction of COVID-19 Anxiety Levels Through Relaxation Techniques: A Study Carried Out in Northern Spain on a Sample of Young University Students.

Since March 14, 2020, Spain has been in a state of alarm due to the crisis created by the outbreak of COVID-19. This measure has led to strict levels of lockdown. This situation has led to an increase in anxiety levels among the younger population. For this reason, an intervention was carried out on university voluntary participants in order to help lower their anxiety levels. Specifically, a telematic workshop was implemented to teach emotional literacy and relaxation techniques combined with the practice of the techniques in an autonomous manner. Anxiety measurements were taken before and af

[Type A botulinum toxin: a new methods in treating focal hyperhidrosis. A summary of various possibilities in hyperhidrosis therapy with special emphasis type A botulinum toxin injections].

Hyperhidrosis is defined as an excess of sweating over the amount necessary for thermoregulation. Essential focal hyperhidrosis is a overactivity of the sweat glands of the axilla, palms and soles probably due to a disorder of the sympathetic nervous system. The therapy is difficult, even though there are many therapeutic options. Beside the effort to treat the psychovegetative disorder (autogenic training or acupuncture), there are efforts to seal the lumen of terminal sweat ducts using aluminiumchlorhydroxide application or iontophoresis. Surgery has the aim to eliminate sweat glands either

Self-touch versus muscle relaxation: Short-term benefits for physical well-being and body appreciation.

OBJECTIVES: Body-focused relaxation techniques, such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), have been shown to reduce physical tension and alleviate negative emotions. This pilot study employed a randomized crossover design to compare the short-term effects of a single video-guided session of PMR and self-touch (Idiopraxy) on perceived tension, well-being, and state body appreciation. METHODS: A total of n = 134 university students (M = 25 years, 72% female) completed single sessions of Idiopraxy and PMR (randomized sequence; separated by a 24-hour break). Immediately before and after a sess

Psychophysiological assessment and correction of spatial disorientation during simulated Orion spacecraft re-entry.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has identified a potential risk of spatial disorientation, motion sickness, and degraded performance to astronauts during re-entry and landing of the proposed Orion crew vehicle. The purpose of this study was to determine if a physiological training procedure, Autogenic-Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE), can mitigate these adverse effects. Fourteen men and six women were assigned to two groups (AFTE, no-treatment Control) matched for motion sickness susceptibility and gender. All subjects received a standard rotating chair test to determ

The management of chronic hysteria: a review and double-blind trial of electrosleep and other relaxation methods.

The effectiveness and mode of action of electrosleep therapy in chronic hysteria was evaluated in a double blind trial with a 1 month follow-up. Matched groups of hysterics were treated with central electrical stimulation and relaxation, peripheral electrical stimulation and relaxation, or relaxation only. Autogenic training exercises were used initially to standarize the relaxation instructions for all the patients. Central electrical stimulation has no specific benefit for hysteria. Rhythmic peripheral stimulation does increase the effect of verbal suggestions to relax initially but has no l

Post-Traumatic Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain after Dental Implant Surgery and the Injustice Experience Questionnaire.

Painful post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy (PTTN) is a known complication of dental implant therapy. Patients with PTTN develop sensory abnormalities in the orofacial region, which may be a psychosocial aspect, and dentists should assess somatosensory testing and psychosocial factors. The patients were assessed using quantitative sensory testing (QST). A 64-year-old female presented with allodynia of the left lower lip that occurred after a surgical implant procedure. Persistent pain started 4 months after the placement of two dental implants in the mandible. Sensory testing of these areas r
