ART Innovations: Fostering Women's Psychophysical Health between Bioethics Precepts and Human Rights.

Infertility is a highly relevant global issue affecting the reproductive health of at least 15% of reproductive-aged couples worldwide. The scope and severity of the infertility problem is even more prevalent in developing countries, mostly due to untreated reproductive tract infections (RTIs). Infertility, however, goes beyond the mere inability to procreate, but brings about profound psychological, social, and ethical implications of enormous magnitude. In vitro fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproduction technologies (ARTs) have gradually become widespread therapeutic options. After

Did Bioethics Matter? A History of Autonomy, Consent, and Intersex Genital Surgery.

This article argues that the rise of bioethics in the post-WWII era and the emergence of the legal doctrine of informed consent in the late 1950s should have had a greater impact on patients with intersex traits (atypical sex development) than they did, given their emphasis on respect for autonomy and beneficence toward patients. Instead, these progressive trends collided with a turn in intersex management toward infants, who were unable to provide autonomous consent about their medical care. Patient autonomy took a back seat as parents heeded physicians' advice in an environment even more hie

Artificial wombs in perinatal medicine: a transformative frontier in neonatal care and bioethics.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the current state and translational readiness of artificial womb technology (AWT), focusing on its technical feasibility, preclinical validation, and ethical, legal, and clinical implications for perinatal medicine. METHODS: We conducted an integrative narrative review of the scientific literature from January 2000 to May 2025. Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using terms such as "artificial womb," "extrauterine fetal incubation," "artificial placenta," "preterm birth," and "bioethics." A total of 65 peer-reviewed studies were included, spa

The eco-ethical contribution of Menico Torchio - a forgotten pioneer of European Bioethics.

BACKGROUND: In 1926, Fritz Jahr described bio-ethics (German: bio-ethik) as "the assumption of moral obligations not only towards humans, but towards all forms of life." Jahr summarized his philosophy by declaring, "Respect every living being on principle as an end in itself and treat it, if possible, as such!." Bioethics was thus originally an ethical system concerned with the "problems of interference with other living beings… and generally everything related to the balance of the ecosystem" according to the 1978 Encyclopedia of Bioethics. This definition was predicated on the work of Fritz

Evaluating non-disclosure of errors and healthcare organization: a case of bioethics consultation.

Sometimes medical errors should not be disclosed. We report a case of semen samples exchange, during a homologous artificial insemination procedure, where a bioethics consultation was required. The bioethics consultation addressed ethical and legal elements in play, supporting non-disclosure to some of the subjects involved. Through a proper methodology, gathering factual and juridical elements, a consultant can show when a moral dilemma between values and rights-privacy versus fatherhood, in our case-is unsubstantial, in a given context, because of the groundlessness of the value or the right

[Medical revocation processes in the state of São Paulo under the bioethics perspective].

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze, from the perspective of Bioethics, the characteristics of the ethical professional processes of physicians sentenced to have their license revoked in the State of São Paulo. METHODS: Retrospective descriptive study of 41 Ethical Professional Processes of the Regional Board of Medicine of the State of São Paulo which resulted in the revocation of the medical license of 45 physicians, between January, 1988 and December, 2004. All processes were judged by the Federal Board of Medicine. The following variables were collected: origin of accusation, place of

The "wider view": André Helleger's passionate, integrating intellect and the creation of bioethics.

This article provides an account of how André Hellegers, founder and first Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, laid medicine open to bioethics. Helleger's approach to bioethics, as to morality generally and also to medicine and biomedical science, involved taking the "wider view" -- a value-filled vision that integrated and gave meaning to what otherwise was disparate, precarious, and conflicting. This article shows how Helleger's wider view of bioethics was shaped by events in his own life, his resultant sense of the precariousness of life and health, his com

Addressing in-hospital substance use: A bioethical evaluation of two possible approaches.

Up to 40% of patients with substance use disorder report using non-prescribed drugs when hospitalized. In-hospital substance (IHSU) use is associated with poor outcomes and raises safety concerns for healthcare providers. Despite its prevalence, little guidance exists regarding best practices in responding to IHSU. Here, we present a case-based, bioethical evaluation comparing two possible approaches to address IHSU: (1) a "containment-focused" approach that relies on involvement of security and uses restrictive interventions to prevent further drug use, and (2) a "patient-first" approach, whi

Perfective and Technocratic Enhancement: An Aristotelian-Thomistic Inquiry Into Contemporary Bioethical Challenges.

Drawing on the philosophical and scientific coherence of the Instruction Dignitas Personae, promulgated in 2008 by the then Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, this essay examines the technological manipulation of the human body, focusing on human enhancement. It explores why certain biomedical interventions, ranging from gene editing to pharmacological treatments like statins, raise important bioethical and metaphysical questions about the nature of health, the goals of medicine, and the limits of human self-transformation. The argument begins by analyzing the pharmacological profile

Climate change and environmental degradation: bioethical considerations and impact for neonatal care.

Climate change has severe consequences for neonatal health. Neonates are uniquely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to their developing bodies and immature immune and thermoregulatory systems. Climate change increases the risk of severe weather events, including extreme heat and natural disasters, as well as pollution and chemical exposures. The physiologic fragility of neonates and dependence on a stable environment require healthcare systems and policymakers to ensure protections are in place to mitigate health risks and potential impacts that will have long-lasting effects on

A critical view on using "life not worth living" in the bioethics of assisted reproduction.

This paper critically engages with how life not worth living (LNWL) and cognate concepts are used in the field of beginning-of-life bioethics as the basis of arguments for morally requiring the application of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and/or germline genome editing (GGE). It is argued that an objective conceptualization of LNWL is largely too unreliable in beginning-of-life cases for deriving decisive normative reasons that would constitute a moral duty on the part of intending parents. Subjective frameworks are found to be more suitable to determine LNWL, but they are not access

Health care ethics consultation: nature, goals, and competencies. A position paper from the Society for Health and Human Values-Society for Bioethics Consultation Task Force on Standards for Bioethics Consultation.

Patients, families, and health care providers have a right to expect that ethics consultants can deal competently with the complex issues that they are asked to address. The Society for Health and Human Values-Society for Bioethics Consultation Task Force on Standards for Bioethics Consultation explored core competencies and related issues in ethics consultation. This position paper summarizes the content of the resulting Task Force Report, which included nine general conclusions: 1) U.S. societal context makes "ethics facilitation" an appropriate approach to ethics consultation; 2) ethics fac

Reconstructing Al-Farabi's ethical framework in contemporary bioethics: genetics, reproduction, and technological challenges.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary bioethics operates within pluralistic societies, where ethical reasoning is not confined to prescriptive frameworks but rather involves deliberation across competing moral perspectives. Although the dominant approaches remain largely Western, there has been an increasing interest in integrating non-Western philosophical traditions. This study examines whether Al-Farabi's ethical framework can contribute to contemporary bioethical discourse without assuming direct conceptual equivalence. METHODS: The study employed a sequential mixed-methods design integrating lexical

Assessment of bioethics education, ethical awareness, and training needs among physicians in Jordan.

Teaching bioethics contributes to promoting sound clinical decisions, but a research gap persists in Jordan regarding the ethical challenges facing physicians and their training requirements. This cross-sectional online survey assessed bioethics education, ethical awareness, perceived competence, and ethical practices among physicians practicing in Jordan. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed using convenience sampling through social media, professional networks, and medical associations. A total of 559 physicians participated. Most respondents were male (59.4%), aged 26-30 years (47.8%)

Anaesthesia Waste Gases and Bioethics: Balancing Patient Care, Environmental Responsibility, and Occupational Safety.

Anaesthesia waste gases (AWGs) represent a significant yet often overlooked contributor to healthcare's environmental footprint, with implications extending beyond ecological concerns to encompass occupational hazards and complex ethical considerations. This article examines the intersection of AWGs and bioethics through the framework of environmental stewardship, occupational health principles, patient-centered care, and distributive justice. Contemporary volatile anaesthetics possess global warming potentials thousands of times greater than carbon dioxide, while implicated occupational expos

COMMENT: Bioethics in Unani medicine: Relevant quotes from Kamilussanah, a 10th century manuscript.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in its Alma Ata Declaration, 1978, focuses on the development, promotion and recognition of the traditional medical systems. India has taken steps in this direction by recognising Unani medicine with other traditional medical systems practised in India. Presently, Government is promoting integration of the recognised traditional medical systems with conventional medicine at the national level, as an interdisciplinary approach to providing better patient-centred care. Bioethics is a field of enquiry that examines ethical issues and dilemmas emerging from medi

Research, education, ethics consultation: evaluating a Bioethics Unit in an Oncological Research Hospital.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the activities of a Bioethics Unit (BU) 5 years since its implementation (2016-2020). The BU is a research unit providing empirical research on ethical issues related to clinical practice, clinical ethics consultation, and ethical education for health care professionals (HPS). METHODS: We performed an explanatory, sequential, mixed-method, observational study, using the subsequent qualitative data to explain the initial quantitative findings. Quantitative data were collected from an internal database and analyzed by desc

Clinical trials as treatment option: bioethics and health care disparities in substance dependency.

Bioethicists have warned against the dangers of mixing research with treatment. They are concerned that research priorities may take precedence over individual patient needs and that research subjects tend to misunderstand the purpose of research or overestimate the direct medical benefits of participating in studies. Yet, other work has questioned whether clinical research can always be separated from therapeutic benefit for participants. Using in-depth interviews with participants in two phase III randomized U.S. clinical trials for methamphetamine dependency, we examine the treatment option

Between technique and virtue: a bioethical reflection on the management of patients with anorectal malformations.

Anorectal malformations (ARM) present complex clinical and ethical challenges that extend from neonatal surgical decision-making to long-term functional rehabilitation. This review explores three bioethical issues that emerge in the care of patients with ARM: first, the application of Beauchamp and Childress's principles of biomedical ethics to surgical management and rehabilitation; second, the identification of an ethical framework to navigate the intersection between clinical and ethical decision-making in rare diseases; and third, the ethical challenges related to acquiring professional co
