Mercury (Hg) pollution in agricultural soils and its potential pathway to the human food chain can pose a serious health concern. Understanding the pathway of Hg in plants and how the speciation may change upon interaction with other elements used for biofortification can be critical to assess the real implications for the final plant-based product. In that respect, selenium (Se) biofortification of crops grown in Se-poor soil regions is becoming a common practice to overcome Se deficient diets. Therefore, it is important to assess the interplay between these two elements since Se may form com

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D insufficiency remains a concern in the United States because of limited natural food sources and insufficient ultraviolet B radiation exposure. Biofortification of poultry and eggs with vitamin D or 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) is a potential strategy to improve vitamin D status.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess whether biofortification of chicken and eggs with 25(OH)D3 increases total serum 25(OH)D concentrations compared with vitamin D3 supplementation.
METHODS: Participants (n = 57) were randomly assigned into 3 groups for an 8-wk winter intervention. Participa

In many poorer parts of the world, biofortification is a strategy that increases the concentration of target nutrients in staple food crops, mainly by genetic manipulation, to alleviate prevalent nutrient deficiencies. We reviewed the (i) prevalence of vitamin A, iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) deficiencies; (ii) availability of vitamin A, iron and Zn biofortified crops, and their acceptability in South Africa. The incidence of vitamin A and iron deficiency among children below five years old is 43.6% and 11%, respectively, while the risk of Zn deficiency is 45.3% among children aged 1 to 9 years. Des

Cereals are a major source of dietary energy and protein but are nutritionally poor in micronutrients. Zinc (Zn) biofortification of staple crops has been proposed as a promising strategy to combat the global challenge of human Zn-deficiency. The aim of this study was to improve the Zn content in the edible part of the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grain by enhancing Zn translocation into the developing seeds. We demonstrate that the barley plasma membrane P-type ATPase Zn transporter, HvHMA2 is an efficient candidate for mineral biofortification of crops. Following a cisgenic approach to produc

Worldwide, nearly two-thirds of the population do not consume the recommended amount of magnesium (Mg) in their diet. Furthermore, low Mg status (hypomagnesaemia) is known to contribute to a number of human chronic disease conditions. Because the principal dietary Mg source is of plant origin, agronomic and genetic biofortification strategies are aimed at improving nutritional Mg content in food crops to overcome this mineral deficiency in humans. This update incorporates the contributions of annotated permeases involved in Mg uptake, storage and recycling with a schematic model of Mg movement

One-third of the world's population is suffering from "hidden hunger" due to micronutrient deficiency. Zinc is acquired through diet, leading its deficiency to the development of disorders such as retarded growth, anorexia, infections, and hypogeusia. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop an agronomic workflow for Zn biofortification on two red winegrapes varieties (cv. Castelão and Syrah) and determine the physicochemical implications for winemaking. Both varieties produced in Setúbal (Portugal) were submitted to four foliar applications of ZnSO4 or ZnO (900 and 1350 g ha-1, respectively),

There are over a hundred genotypes of Phaseolus vulgaris L. grown and consumed in Tanzania. Currently, identification of bean genotypes containing high seed iron and zinc contents has been the focus globally for common bean iron and zinc biofortification. Diversity in seed iron and zinc contents were investigated in 99 bean genotypes grown in Tanzania to identify high seed iron and zinc-containing genotypes for use in iron and zinc biofortification. Flour obtained by grinding seeds of each bean genotypes was used in the determination of iron and zinc concentrations. Data were subjected to anal

Iron is a crucial micronutrient for plants, but its availability in soil is often limited. Iron deficiency compromises plant growth, and low iron content in crops contributes substantially to the 'hidden hunger' that affects human health globally. The elucidation of Strategy I (reduction-based) and Strategy II (phytosiderophore-based) for iron acquisition was a milestone in plant biology and enabled the development of biofortification concepts. However, recent genetic evidence reveals that the boundary between the two strategies is blurred, with many plants possessing elements of both. Here we

Rice is a major food crop to approximately half of the human population. Unfortunately, the starchy endosperm, which is the remaining portion of the seed after polishing, contains limited amounts of micronutrients. Here, it is shown that this is particularly the case for thiamin (vitamin B1). Therefore, a tissue-specific metabolic engineering approach was conducted, aimed at enhancing the level of thiamin specifically in the endosperm. To achieve this, three major thiamin biosynthesis genes, THIC, THI1 and TH1, controlled by strong endosperm-specific promoters, were employed to obtain engineer

Flammulina velutipes is one of the most popular edible mushrooms worldwide. A selenium-biofortification method for its fruiting body was developed using selenite. This study investigated the selenium content, distribution, speciation and the effect of selenium on mushroom growth, nutritive value, and mineral accumulation. Results showed that F. velutipes accumulated nearly 108 μg/g of organic selenium under treatment with 20 μg/g selenite, which accounts for over 97% of total selenium. Most (60-74%) of selenium combined with the protein fraction, whereas 15-21% combined with the polysaccharide

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most prevalent micronutrient disorder worldwide, affecting nearly one quarter of the global population and disproportionately impacting women and children in low- and middle-income countries. Conventional interventions, such as supplementation and industrial fortification, have shown limited long-term success. Therefore, diet-based strategies using culturally accepted staple foods have gained increasing attention as complementary approaches to preventing IDA. The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), is a staple food widely consumed in Africa and Latin Americ

Thiamin biofortification of food crops by genetic engineering has the potential to solve human health issues related to thiamin deficiencies. Rice is an obvious target for thiamin biofortification because white rice, which is obtained after removing the thiamin-rich outer layer of the grain, is a poor source of thiamin. To increase the levels and stability of thiamin in white rice, engineering strategies that boost the expression of biosynthesis genes and/or thiamin binding proteins have been reported. In this chapter, we describe protocols for generating and characterizing thiamin-engineered

This paper reports the studies on the elaboration of new environmentally friendly fertilizer obtained by valorization of post-extraction biomass residues of alfalfa (Medicago) and goldenrod (Solidago), after extraction with supercritical carbon dioxide, via biosorption process. The performance and controlled release properties of fertilizer were assessed in laboratory under in vitro and in vivo conditions, as well as on the field. In vitro tests show high bioavailability of micronutrients (Cu, Mn, Zn) administered on the biological carrier - between 60 and 80%, in relation to 100% availability

Micronutrients deficiency in soil-plant and human is well-addressed; however, little is known about their spatial distribution, magnitude of deficiency and biological nexus. Zinc deficiency (ZnD) and iron-deficiency anemia (FeD) are two serious nutritional concerns which are negatively affecting human health. Herein, a survey-based case study was conducted in major wheat-based cropping system of east-central Pakistan. Soil and grain samples were collected from 125 field-grown wheat from 25 distinct sites/villages and GPS coordinates were taken for mapping. The collected samples were tags accor

More than three billion people worldwide suffer from iron deficiency associated anemia and an equal number people suffer from zinc deficiency. These conditions are more prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. In developing countries, children under the age of five with stunted growth and pregnant or lactating women were found to be at high risk of zinc and iron deficiencies. Biofortification, defined as breeding to develop varieties of staple food crops whose grain contains higher levels of micronutrients such as iron and zinc, are one of the most promising, cost-effective and sustaina

Biofortification interventions have the potential to combat malnutrition. This review explored the use of provitamin A-biofortified maize (PVABM) as a vitamin A deficiency (VAD) reduction agricultural-based strategy. Maize has been identified as one of the key staple crops for biofortification to reduce hidden hunger in Africa. Most nutrition interventions have not been successful in reducing hunger because rural communities, who mainly rely on agriculture, have been indirectly excluded. The biofortification intervention proposed here aims to be an inclusive strategy, based on smallholder farm

Green chemistry provides a conceptual and technological framework for redesigning agricultural inputs and analytical workflows toward safer, more efficient, and more sustainable crop production. In this review, molecular crop quality is proposed as a chemical and metabolomic endpoint of green chemistry in sustainable agriculture. Rather than evaluating agricultural interventions proposed as compatible with green chemistry only through yield, input reduction, or environmental performance, this review focuses on their capacity to reshape crop composition, including micronutrient density, primary

Vitamin A deficiency remains one of the world's major public health problems despite food fortification and supplements strategies. Biofortification of staple crops with enhanced levels of pro-vitamin A (PVA) offers a sustainable alternative strategy to both food fortification and supplementation. As a proof of concept, PVA-biofortified transgenic Cavendish bananas were generated and field trialed in Australia with the aim of achieving a target level of 20 μg/g of dry weight (dw) β-carotene equivalent (β-CE) in the fruit. Expression of a Fe'i banana-derived phytoene synthase 2a (MtPsy2a) gene

Bananas (Musa spp.) are a target crop for provitamin A carotenoids (pVACs) biofortification programs aiming at reducing the negative impact on health caused by vitamin A deficiency in vulnerable populations. However, studies to understand the effect of ripening methods and stages and the genotype on carotenoid content and bioaccessibility in the banana germplasm are scarce. This study evaluated carotenoid content and bioaccessibility in 27 different banana accessions at three maturation stages and two ripening methods (natural ripening and ethylene ripening). Across most accessions, total caro

Extreme weather events, like marine heatwaves (MHWs), are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, posing several challenges to marine ecosystems and their services. As disease outbreaks are often prompted by these acute phenomena, it is essential to develop eco-innovative strategies that can efficiently improve farmed fish resilience, especially under sub-optimal rearing conditions, thereby ensuring a sustainable aquaculture production. This study aimed to unveil farmed juvenile white seabream (Diplodus sargus, 28.50 ± 1.10 g weight, n = 150) immune and antioxidant responses u
