Action of Metarhizium brunneum (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) Against Organophosphate- and Pyrethroid-Resistant Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and the Synergistic Effects of Phenylthiourea.

Dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya arboviruses are endemic in tropical countries and are transmitted by Aedes aegypti. Resistant populations of this mosquito against chemical insecticides are spreading worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the biological effects of exposure of pesticide-sensitive Ae. aegypti larvae (Rockefeller) to conidia of the entomopathogen, Metarhizium brunneum, laboratory strains ARSEF 4556 and V275, and any synergistic activity of phenylthiourea (PTU). In addition, to investigate the nature of any cross-resistance mechanisms, these M. brunneum strains were te

The Combination of α-Fe2O3 NP and Trichoderma sp. Improves Antifungal Activity Against Fusarium Wilt.

Soil-borne plant pathogens are the most damaging pathogens responsible for severe crop damage. A conventional chemotherapy approach to these pathogens has numerous environmental issues, while biological control agents (BCAs) are less promising under field conditions. There is an immediate need to develop an integrated strategy for utilizing nanoparticles and biocontrol to manage soil-borne pathogens, such as Fusarium wilt, effectively. Simulation of BCA metabolites to nanoparticle biocontrol metabolites is considered the most effective biocontrol approach. Combining Fe2O3 nanoparticles and Tri

Biological weapons and bioterrorism preparedness: importance of public-health awareness and international cooperation.

Biological weapons and biological terrorism have recently come into focus due to the deliberate release of Bacillus anthracis via mail delivered in the USA. Since the 1930s, biological weapons have been developed in a number of countries. In 1975, the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention entered into force; this prohibits the use of these weapons and has been signed by a large majority of countries (144). Unfortunately, several countries failed to respect this treaty. The Soviet Union continued and expanded its biological weapons program, and after the Gulf War it was revealed that Iraq als

A patent review on strategies for biological control of mosquito vector.

Mosquitoes are the vectors responsible for transmitting serious and life-threatening diseases such as malaria, dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and lymphatic filariasis. Very few effective vaccines or drugs have been developed so far to prevent or treat these diseases, highlighting a need for vector control. This paper presents a comprehensive technology overview of patent documents disclosing biological agents for mosquito control. The patent analysis revealed that comparable number of patent documents were filed in two technology categories: non-recombinant agents and genetically modified (

Application Potential of Wheat Root Endophytic Fungus G11: A Novel Biocontrol Agent Against Wheat Sharp Eyespot.

Wheat sharp eyespot, mainly caused by Rhizoctonia cerealis, is a destructive soilborne disease that significantly threatens global wheat production, necessitating the development of sustainable control strategies. In this study, we isolated and identified an endophytic fungus, Penicillium oxalicum G11, from the roots of healthy wheat plants and comprehensively evaluated its antagonistic mechanisms and biocontrol potential against R. cerealis. In vitro assays demonstrated that G11 effectively inhibited R. cerealis growth through multiple mechanisms, including competition, antibiosis, and mycopa

Comparative transcriptomics of biopesticide-treated olives subjected to Xylella infection.

BACKGROUND: The management of Xylella fastidiosa infections relies on integrated strategies of controlling vector populations and removing inoculum sources. The impact of a subspecies pauca strain of this bacterium (XfDD) was particularly severe in olive in Apulia, Italy, where an entire economy was affected, and a territory was devastated. There is an urgent request for strategies to combat the pathogen in planta, as well as for bioinsecticides targeting its vector insect species, and that these should conform to criteria of environmental acceptance. Therefore, this study analyses the Mechani

Orchid mycorrhizal fungus from the Brazilian Cerrado exhibits biocontrol activity against Meloidogyne javanica.

Waitea circinata, an orchid-associated mycorrhizal fungus, was evaluated for the first time as a biological control agent against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica. The fungus was originally isolated from the roots of Epidendrum nocturnum, a rupicolous orchid to the Brazilian Cerrado. In vitro assays demonstrated that W. circinata parasitized nematode eggs, with parasitism rates of 13-15% and characteristic emergence of septate hyphae with right-angle branching. Microscopy revealed eggshell degradation, arrested embryogenesis, and juvenile deformation. A mycelial suspension (MSF) of

NezhNPV, a new biocontrol agent for Nesodiprion zhejiangensis Zhou & Xiao (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), an emerging forest pest.

BACKGROUND: Nesodiprion zhejiangensis, a multivoltine sawfly, is widely distributed in south China and has caused serious damage to forests. Historically, N. zhejiangensis management has relied heavily on synthetic chemicals. To reduce the reliance on chemical control, we previously isolated a nucleopolyhedrovirus, NezhNPV, from deceased N. zhejiangensis larvae. A subsequent pathogenicity assay confirmed its high virulence in a laboratory setting. RESULTS: In order to comprehensively examine the hypothesis that NezhNPV is an effective new biocontrol agent for N. zhejiangensis, we carried out

Biocontrol of Cercospora leaf spot in sugar beet by a novel Bacillus velezensis KT27 strain: Enhanced antifungal activity and growth promotion in laboratory and field conditions.

Diseases in crops are a major contributor to yield reduction and economic losses. Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), caused by Cercospora beticola, is among the most severe diseases affecting sugar beet and other crops. The increasing resistance of C. beticola to conventional chemical fungicides, along with their excessive application, exacerbates environmental pollution. This study investigates the antagonistic activity of a newly isolated strain, Bacillus velezensis KT27, against Cercospora beticola, Rhizoctonia cerealis, and Fusarium oxysporum under laboratory conditions. The bacterium's ability t

Biologic therapy in the management of asthma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Current asthma management relies on inhaled corticosteroids, but some asthma is not well controlled with inhaled steroids alone or in combination with long-acting bronchodilators or leukotriene pathway inhibitors. The field of biologic therapy has grown dramatically in the past two decades, with current availability of three molecules, with two distinct and highly selective approaches to interfering with the allergic and eosinophilic airway inflammation common to most asthma. This review summarizes current and future options for incorporating biologic therapy into the overal

Is Switching Biologics in CRSwNP Promising? Real-World Evidence for Clinical Outcome Measures in Comparison.

OBJECTIVE: Biologics are well established in treating severe chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Most patients benefit from the first chosen biologic agent, in a few cases switching biologics can be a further therapeutic strategy. METHODS: In this monocentric retrospective study, patients with CRSwNP and biologic therapy were compared with respect to Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) score, bilateral nasal polyp score (NPS), and change in biologic agent as primary variables. Statistical analysis was performed using independent sample t-tests or Welch's t-tests for continuous

Aberrant splicing of a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha 6 subunit is associated with spinosad tolerance in the thrips predator Orius laevigatus.

Susceptibility to insecticides is one of the limiting factors preventing wider adoption of natural enemies to control insect pest populations. Identification and selective breeding of insecticide tolerant strains of commercially used biological control agents (BCAs) is one of the approaches to overcome this constraint. Although a number of beneficial insects have been selected for increased tolerance to insecticides the molecular mechanisms underpinning these shifts in tolerance are not well characterised. Here we investigated the molecular mechanisms of enhanced tolerance of a lab selected st

Effectiveness of systemic treatment agents on psoriatic nails: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Nails, one of the most visible sites of body, are frequently involved in psoriasis and accepted as the most difficult site for topical treatment because of their anatomical structure. Healing of the psoriatic nails usually occurs when systemic therapy is initiated to treat severe skin psoriasis or joint involvement, but sometimes systemic therapy is essential for severe nail psoriasis, although Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score is low or none of the joints are affected. In this case, knowing which systemic agent is most potent on nail findings is important. AIM: We ai

Vancomycin for the Induction and Maintenance of Remission in Biologics Refractory Patient with Ulcerative Colitis and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Post-Liver and Bone Marrow Transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease-primary sclerosing cholangitis (IBD-PSC) is a unique disease entity that has very poorly understood pathogenesis and unique clinical presentation. Patients with this disease may eventually require liver transplantation as there is no current curative treatment for PSC to halt disease progression for liver failure. Thirty percent of patients with IBD may experience recurrence despite being on immunosuppression. Few studies have shown that vancomycin has been used as a salvage treatment for patients with refractory ulcerative colitis (UC) exacerbation ref

Systematic review of the efficacy and safety of biological therapy for inflammatory conditions in HIV-infected individuals.

Biologic therapies are injectable immunomodulatory agents directed against specific immune cell or chemical targets. They have transformed the lives of HIV-uninfected individuals with severe inflammatory conditions including psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. The perceived increased infection risk associated with these agents means that HIV-infected individuals have not been included in randomised control trials of these drugs. The literature for use of biologic therapies in HIV-infected populations is limited to case reports and case series. There are additional data on

[Functional changes in human peripheral neutrophils in workers with different exposure to noxious agents].

Free radicals have a role in interaction between occupational exposure to multiple agents and biological systems; peripheral neutrophils (PMNs) are a source of free radicals and other reactive oxygen species. PMN's activity was evaluated by chemiluminescence assays referring to different noxious agents exposure levels. Two office workers groups were recruited: first one was exposed to several agents, control group was composed by lower exposure workers. Intra and extracellular chemiluminescence evaluation was performed to obtain radical species information. Stimulated PMNs from exposed subject

Phototoxicity of Ultraviolet-A against the Whitefly Bemisia tabaci and Its Compatibility with an Entomopathogenic Fungus and Whitefly Parasitoid.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation significantly affects insect life and, as a result, has been widely used to control different invertebrate pests. The current results demonstrate that when Bemisia tabaci first instar nymphs are exposed to UV-A light for 12, 24, 48, and 72 h, their developmental and biological parameters are negatively affected by UV-A exposure; the effect increased with an increase in exposure time. We hypothesized that UV-A light is compatible with other biological control agents. Results showed that when the entomopathogenic fungus Cordyceps fumosorosea was applied to third instar

Use of mixed cultures of biocontrol agents to control sheep nematodes.

Biological control is a promising non-chemical approach for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. Use of combinations of biocontrol agents have been reported to be an effective method to increase the efficacy of biological control effects. In this study, combinations of either two Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) or Clonostachys rosea (C. rosea) isolates and Bt+C. rosea isolates were evaluated in vitro in microtitre plates for their biocontrol activity on sheep nematodes. The Baermann technique was used to extract the surviving L3 larval stages of intestinal nematodes and counted unde
