Lineage-associated differences in adenine methylation patterns of mammalian-associated Campylobacter fetus isolates: a possible role for epigenetic factors in host tropism and pathogenesis.

Mammalian Campylobacter fetus (CF) is divided into two subspecies, C. fetus fetus (CFF) and C. fetus venerealis (CFV), the latter being bovine-adapted and responsible for the notifiable disease bovine genital campylobacteriosis (BGC). Differentiation between CF subspecies has traditionally been undertaken by a few biochemical tests, but these are complicated by the existence of a biotype, C. fetus venerealis intermedius (CFVi), which shares attributes of both CFF and CFV. Molecular methods targeting specific genes have gained acceptance for more accurate subtype identification and align well w

Management of Mycotic Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Caused by Levofloxacin- and Ampicillin-Resistant Campylobacter fetus With Synthetic Vascular Graft Replacement Surgery and Long-Term Minocycline Therapy.

Mycotic aortic aneurysms caused by Campylobacter fetus (C. fetus) are rare, and the optimal regimens and duration of antimicrobial therapy remain unclear. We present a case of a man in his 70s with hypertension and chronic heavy alcohol consumption who presented with an eight-day history of persistent fever. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a mycotic infrarenal aortic aneurysm. Empiric ceftriaxone and vancomycin were switched to minocycline after cultures identified levofloxacin- and ampicillin-resistant, but minocycline-susceptible C. fetus. The patient

Trichomoniasis and campylobacteriosis in bulls in the Republic of Transkei.

Trichomonas foetus was demonstrated in 23/87 (26.4%) and Campylobacter fetus in 25/87 (28.7%) of bulls tested in Transkei. A total of 16/87 (18.39%) of bulls tested were positive for both Trichomonas foetus and Campylobacter fetus. Bulls from 14 sites in Transkei were tested and Trichomonas foetus was isolated at 9 of these sites. Campylobacter fetus was isolated at 10 of the 14 sites. The results indicate that both Trichomonas foetus and Campylobacter fetus are widespread throughout the cattle population in the Republic of Transkei and may account for infertility problems.

Campylobacter enteritis associated with canine infection.

Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni has recently been recognised as a human enteric pathogen. Five cases of campylobacter enteritis are described. All five patients had abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Two of the five patients had bloody diarrhoea and relapses. All the patients had been in contact with young dogs which had had diarrhoea. Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni was isolated from these dogs or from their litter-mates. Canine infection with Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni may be an important source of infection causing diarrhoea in man.

[Prevalence and Characterization of Campylobacter in Bile from Bovine Gallbladders].

Campylobacter is one of the most important causes of food-borne infectious diseases. Antibiotics are rarely needed to treat campylobacteriosis, but occasionally used in severe or prolonged cases. Consumption of contaminated bovine liver is a source of campylobacteriosis. Bovine liver can be contaminated with Campylobacter on the surface and inside by the bile at slaughterhouses. Therefore, we investigated the current prevalence and characteristics of Campylobacter in bovine bile at a slaughterhouse. Campylobacter was isolated from 35.7% (55/154) of bile samples. C. jejuni and C. fetus were the

Campylobacter-associated appendicitis: prevalence and clinicopathologic features.

To determine the prevalence of Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni-associated appendicitis, we studied, retrospectively, by means of immunohistochemistry, the appendectomy specimens of 116 consecutive patients, operated upon because of suspected acute appendicitis. We found immunohistochemical evidence of Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni infection in three patients. These findings were confirmed by electron microscopy. Based upon these three cases and five additional appendectomy specimens from patients with Campylobacter enteritis diagnosed by stool cultures, the clinical and histologi

Mucosal invasion in campylobacter enteritis.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni has recently been recognized as a significant cause of enteritis in humans. The organism has been previously postulated to cause illness by direct invasion of the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, but this has not been documented. Reported is a case of Campylobacter enteritis in which mucosal ulceration and crypt sbscesses were seen on rectal biopsy, suggesting that the pathogenesis of Campylobacter fetus enteritis involves direct mucosal invasion.

Emergence of a tetracycline-resistant Campylobacter jejuni clone associated with outbreaks of ovine abortion in the United States.

Campylobacter infection is one of the major causes of ovine abortions worldwide. Historically, Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus was the major cause of Campylobacter-associated abortion in sheep; however, Campylobacter jejuni is increasingly associated with sheep abortions. We examined the species distribution, genotypes, and antimicrobial susceptibilities of abortion-associated Campylobacter isolates obtained from multiple lambing seasons on different farms in Iowa, Idaho, South Dakota, and California. We found that C. jejuni has replaced C. fetus as the predominant Campylobacter species causi

[Campylobacter infection in children].

Enteritis by Campylobacter jejuni/coli is by far the most frequent clinical entity of campylobacter-infection. It may be compared to salmonella-enteritis as for its epidemiologic importance. The course of the disease may be dramatic, but can be successfully treated as soon as the pathogen is known. In prematures and newborn babies infections with Campylobacter fetus ssp. fetus are life-threatening and early diagnosis is of life-saving importance. Five observations of campylobacter-enteritis in children aged 2, 8, and 10 years are reported. They were characterized by high fever frequent loose,

Campylobacter-induced fetal death in a rhesus monkey.

A pregnant 4-year-old rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) was presented with a history of acute vaginal bleeding. Physical examination revealed an open cervix. An ultrasound scan demonstrated a viable early third-trimester fetus, approximately 16 weeks of gestational age. Hematology results showed that the monkey was anemic, with a normal leukogram and Döhle bodies. A subsequent cervical culture was positive for Campylobacter fetus. The fetus died 3 days later, and a necropsy of the fetus and placenta was performed. Microscopic examination of the placenta revealed villitis, perivillitis, and decidu

Campylobacter bacteremia: clinical features and factors associated with fatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter bacteremia is uncommon. The influence of underlying conditions and of the impact of antibiotics on infection outcome are not known. METHODS: From January 2000 through December 2004, 183 episodes of Campylobacter bacteremia were identified in 23 hospitals in the Paris, France, area. The medical records were reviewed. Characteristics of bacteremia due to Campylobacter fetus and to other Campylobacter species were compared. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for fatal outcome within 30 days. RESULTS: Most affected patients were elderly

Campylobacter jejuni Bacteremia in the Term Infant A Rare Cause of Neonatal Hematochezia.

Early-onset sepsis caused by Gram-negative spiral organisms is rarely reported, with Campylobacter fetus being a better known causative agent than other Campylobacter species. We report the case of a 2-day-old girl who presented with hematochezia and bacteremia caused by Campylobacter jejuni. She was born full-term. Her family ate undercooked chicken, and Campylobacter enteritis was diagnosed before her birth.

Prevalence and characteristics of Campylobacter from the genital tract of primates and ruminants in Eastern China.

Campylobacter infection is an important cause of genital failure in ruminants in developed countries. Although historically Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus has been the main cause of abortion in sheep, C. jejuni is also increasingly associated with sheep abortions. However, limited information is known on Campylobacter-associated abortions in China. This study initially investigated the distribution of Campylobacter from the genital tracts of humans, monkeys, sheep and cows in China from 2017 to 2018. Ten out of 2126 (0.47%) samples from the genital tracts were Campylobacter positive, of

Temporal prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter spp. from beef cattle in Alberta feedlots.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was temporally assessed in campylobacters isolated from beef cattle (7,738 fecal samples from 2,622 animals) in four commercial feedlots in Alberta. All calves were administered chlortetracycline and oxytetracycline in feed, and a majority of the animals (93%) were injected with long-acting oxytetracycline upon arrival at the feedlot. Fecal samples from individual animals were collected upon arrival (i.e., entry sample), 69 days (standard deviation [SD] = 3 days) after arrival (i.e., interim sample), and 189 days (SD = 33 days) after arrival (i.e., exit sample) a

Campylobacter enteritis: clinical and epidemiologic features.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies (ssp.) jejuni has been recently recognized to cause diarrheal disease in man. To assess its importance as an enteric pathogen, we prospectively studied 514 patients with diarrhea. Campylobacter fetus ssp. jejuni was isolated from the feces of 26 patients (5%) and seven of 11 of their symptomatic household contacts. This organism was isolated from the feces of only one of 18 asymptomatic household contacts and not at all from 157 other healthy persons. Seventeen of 20 patients from whom C. fetus ssp. jejuni was isolated from fecal culture showed at least a fourfol

[Neurologic involvement in campylobacter infections. 5 cases].

Campylobacter are a newly recognized class of human infectious agents. Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus is a cause of sepsis in immunocompromized hosts. Secondary neurological determinations, meningitis and meningoencephalitis appear to be rare. We report 2 cases, and 8 previously reported cases are reviewed. Campylobacter jejuni appears to be a common bacterial pathogen causing a syndrome of enteritis. Since 1982 it has been associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). In one serological retrospective study, Campylobacter jejuni was the most common single pathogen identifiable in associ
