Antidiarrheal and antioxidant activities of Ajuga iva (L.) leave extract.

We studied the effect of Ajuga iva leaves extract (AIE) on the intestinal absorption, motricity and its antioxidant capacity against diarrhea. Wistar rats were divided and received either: castor oil (CO), CO and loperamide or CO and different doses of AIE. AIE prevented dose-dependently CO-induced diarrhea. AIE at 800 mg/kg showed inhibition efficiency on defecation and diarrhea. The pro-oxidant effect of the CO in the small intestine was inhibited significantly in presence of AIE: increasing glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity and lowering oxygen free radicals (OH°, O2°-), carbonyl protein

[Basophil activation test as a helpful tool for the diagnostic and treatment of a case of anaphylaxis due to a preparation of depot testosterone].

INTRODUCTION: In many cases of drug allergy, it is necessary to do in vitro test, for several reasons. BAT (basophil activation test) is a very useful weapon in these cases. In many iv. or im. depot preparations, the culprit of the allergic reaction is an excipient, and not the main component. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old male, suffering from a Klinefelter syndrome needed treatment with a preparation of undecanoate of testosterone (Reandron). With the last administered dose, he suffered an anaphylactic shock with Kounis syndrome. The patient declined any in vivo studies, so we thought of BAT as

Antidiarrheal Action of Bacillus subtilis CU1 CNCM I-2745 and Lactobacillus plantarum CNCM I-4547 in Mice.

Preventive actions of probiotics as antidiarrheal agents are well documented, but their mechanisms are poorly understood. Two selected probiotics, Bacillus subtilis CU1 and Lactobacillus plantarum CNCM I-4547, were tested in mouse experimental models of diarrhea and the possible mechanisms of action were investigated. Diarrhea was induced in mice by oral castor oil administration or by i.v. injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Salmonella enteritis. The antidiarrheal drug loperamide was used as control. Fecal water excretion was quantified for 2 h and paracellular permeability and electrica

Recoverability of Rift Valley fever and sandfly fever Sicilian viruses from infected Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) trapped in various oils.

We studied the effects of various oils used to trap sand flies on the recovery of virus from infected adult Phlebotomus papatasi. Both Rift Valley fever and sandfly fever Sicilian viruses were readily recovered from virus-inoculated specimens held at 26 degrees C on mineral, olive or castor oil-soaked sheets for up to 12 h. However, after 50 h on oil-soaked paper, significantly greater titers were recovered from sand flies trapped with mineral oil than from sand flies trapped with either of the other oils. This indicates that sand flies trapped on oil-soaked paper would be suitable for virus i

Modification of in vitro drug release rate from oily parenteral depots using a formulation approach.

Rate constants for transfer of naproxen and lidocaine from different oils and oil mixtures to aqueous buffer, pH 6.00, were determined using the rotating dialysis cell. Significantly different first-order rate constants related to attainment of equilibrium, k(obs), were derived depending on the type of oil/oil mixtures used in the release experiments. For the drugs a linear correlation was found between logk(obs) and the logarithm of the partition coefficient P(app): logk(obs)=-0.68 logP(app)-0.25 (k(obs) in h(-1), n=26). A linear relationship was observed between the calculated and experiment

Evaluation of rapid colon preparation with Golytely.

The traditional cleansing method of the large bowel usually involves dietary restrictions, purgatives and enema. They are time consuming and uncomfortable, and may result in dehydration. Though Golytely, an oral lavage solution, has been developed since 1980 as an alternative for cleansing the colon and much literature has favored it, it has not been widely used in Taiwan. In this study, we used Golytely without enema for rapid colon cleansing in a consecutive series of 48 patients. The efficacy, change of vital signs, body weights, electrolytes, and urine specific gravity were evaluated. Pati

Commonly used hair oils in the Black community: a narrative review in their use to treat androgenetic alopecia.

Alopecia, the loss of hair on the scalp and/or body, experienced by millions of people worldwide, can be a very debilitating condition. Specifically, androgenetic alopecia (AGA), commonly known as male or female pattern baldness, is the most common form of hair loss. In the African diaspora, oils have traditionally been used to promote hair growth and recently, the application of hair oils to the scalp for the treatment of alopecia has become increasingly popular. With the recent surge of hair oil usage in the Black community, more research is needed to determine the efficacy of hair oils, as
