OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Medulloblastoma is the most common pediatric malignant tumor of the central nervous system in children. Treatment includes surgical excision, external beam radiation, and multiagent chemotherapy. Otologic sequelae are common and may result from radiation and/or chemotherapy. Profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a known complication of neuro-oncologic treatment and may render these patients eligible for cochlear implantation (CI). Issues of CI in this population, including diagnosis, treatment of preoperative middle ear disease, operative and postoperative course

CONCLUSIONS: We observed 4 cases of paroxysmal positional vertigo (PPV) among 62 cochlear implant (CI) recipients. They occurred in the implanted ear without chronological relation with the surgical procedure or the implant's activation. All of them relapsed within 3 months after an initially successful repositioning maneuver, and finally recovered after the second one. None of the patients showed labyrinthine weakness in the implanted ear. The outbreak of PPV did not affect the patients' speech perception performances.
OBJECTIVES: To report and discuss the occurrence of PPV after cochlear im

Cochlear implantation in the paediatric population is now an accepted method of rehabilitating profoundly or totally deaf children. The problems of cochlear implantation in children with other significant medical problems are examined. A retrospective review of the records of the first 45 children implanted at our centre was carried out. The review focused on surgical factors and outcome in addition to variations in technique which have occurred since the programme began. Congenital hearing loss was the most common indication for implantation. Fifteen children (33 per cent) had other medical p

We present eight cases of FN dysfunction after cochlear implantation. Four mechanisms of injury are proposed. The most common injury occurs from the heat of a bur shaft rotating over the FN in the facial recess. Several suggestions are made to help prevent the type of injuries we have seen. Preoperative imaging and intraoperative FN monitoring may be of general assistance in avoiding injuries to the FN, especially in cases of revision surgery and congenital malformations.

OBJECTIVES: This paper attempts to create a new classification type of cochlear hypoplasia (CH)-type malformation taking into consideration of vestibular section and internal auditory canal (IAC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative computed-tomography (CT) scans of cochlear implant (CI) candidates (N=31) from various clinics across the world with CH type malformation were taken for analysis. CT dataset were loaded into 3D-slicer freeware for three-dimensional (3D) segmentation of the inner-ear by capturing complete inner-ear structures from the entire dataset. Cochlear size in terms of diame

Diagnostic imaging methods are very important for patients with bilateral sensourinoural hearing loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is able to demonstrate the vestibulocochlear nerve and facial nerve in the internal acoustic canal. Also computed tomography can be helpful to determination of the deficiency of the cochlear nerve. Cochlear nerve anomalies are classified into three group according to the magnetic resonance imagings. Patients who have cochlear nerve deficiency may not hear with cochlear amplifications. Auditory brain stem implant (ABI) is most suitable for these cases. In this

Recent technological advances in cochlear implant (CI) telemetry have enabled, for the first time, CI users to perform cochlear health (CH) measurements through self-assessment for prolonged periods of time. This is important to better understand the influence of CH on CI outcomes, and to assess the safety and efficacy of future novel treatments for deafness that will be administered as adjunctive therapies to cochlear implantation. We evaluated the feasibility of using a CI to assess CH and examined patterns of electrode impedances, electrically-evoked compound action potentials (eCAPs) and e

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation is a successful method of auditory rehabilitation. This procedure has been associated with facial nerve and vestibular end-organ stimulation suggesting potential for extra-cochlear stimulation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the potential relationship between cochlear implantation and seizure activity in the pediatric implant population.
METHODS: Local Research Ethics Board approval was obtained. The Hospital for Sick Children's Cochlear Implant Database from 1998 to 2011 was retrospectively reviewed. Based on a multidisciplinary team, patien

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and distress of tinnitus pre- and post-cochlear implantation in patients with bilateral severe to profound hearing loss. In this retrospective study, we included patients from a cochlear implant clinic in Perth, Western Australia. Pre- and post-cochlear implantation data from 300 implant recipients were collected on self-reported presence of tinnitus, tinnitus distress using the Tinnitus Reaction Questionnaire (TRQ), hearing-related quality of life using the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB), and consonant-nucleus vowel-cons

We report the first documented case of bilateral cochlear implantation (CI) in a patient with Noonan Syndrome (NS) and enlarged cochlear apertures (ECA). Despite the potential risk of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) gusher, both surgeries were uneventful, and the patient demonstrated significant improvement in auditory thresholds and speech development. This case highlights that ECA should not be considered a contraindication for CI in NS patients.

The most frequent sequelae following a translabyrinthine approach for vestibular schwannoma resection is complete hearing loss on the affected side. Such patients could benefit from a cochlear implant, provided that two essential requisites are met before surgery: a preserved cochlear nerve and a patent cochlea to accommodate the electrode array. The goal of our study is to determine the prevalence and extent of cochlear ossification following a translabyrinthine approach. Postoperative MRI of 41 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified according to the degree of cochlear

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients who receive cochlear implants (CIs) constitutes a significant population in Iran. This population needs regular monitor on long-term outcomes, educational placement and quality of life. Currently, there is no national or regional registry on the long term outcomes of CI users in Iran. The present study aims to introduce the design and implementation of a national patient-outcomes registry on CI recipients for Iran. This Iranian CI registry (ICIR) provides an integrated framework for data collection and sharing, scientific communication and collaboration inCI
