A climate action intervention increases four psychological motivators, as well as climate advocacy, activism and civic participation.

Urgent climate action is needed to keep warming below 2°C and protect hundreds of millions from climate collapse. As part of a broader Registered Report series, this study examined whether a longitudinal intervention designed to strengthen psychological correlates of pro-environmental behaviour could motivate n = 31 university students in The Netherlands to take climate action. The intervention was delivered over six weeks through interactive lessons and activities informed by psychological theories and interventions. The goal was to increase pro-climate behaviours by targeting 12 psychologica

Effect of psychological factors on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy can prevent full immunization against coronavirus infectious disease-19 (COVID-19). We hypothesized that multiple factors, including an individual's personality and psychological factors, are associated with vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: A total of 275 non-vaccinated individuals were recruited for this study. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire including sociodemographic factors, health status, COVID-19 literacy and psychological factors (depressive symptoms, generalized anxiety, somatization, illness anxiety, temperament and character). In a hierarc

Conceptualizing restorative justice for people with mental illnesses leaving prison or jail.

Individuals with psychiatric disabilities who are involved in the criminal justice system face a number of challenges to community integration upon release. There is a critical need to develop and evaluate interventions for these individuals that connect them to the community by enhancing naturalistic social connections and helping them to participate meaningfully in valued roles. The purposes of this article are to describe, provide a theoretical rationale, and propose a conceptual model for the use of a particular restorative justice model, circles of support and accountability, to meet this

Efficacy of the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring Accounting for Imperfect Adherence.

Product adherence is critical to obtaining objective estimates of efficacy of pre-exposure prophylactic interventions against HIV-1 infection. With imperfect adherence, intention-to-treat analyses assess the collective effects of complete, sub-optimal and non-adherence, providing a biased and attenuated estimate of the average causal effect of an intervention. Using data from the MTN-020/ASPIRE phase III trial evaluating HIV-1 efficacy of the dapivirine vaginal ring, we conducted per-protocol, and adherence-adjusted causal inference analyses using principal stratification and marginal structur

Adverse reactions, psychological factors, and their effect on donor retention in men and women.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the effect of a vasovagal reaction (VVR) or needle reaction (NR) on the risk of stopping as a blood donor, taking into account variables from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Is stopping risk solely related to the adverse reaction itself, or do the TPB variables play a role as well? Emphasis is placed on possible sex differences. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: TPB variables were assessed within 12,051 whole blood donors. Also, donors reported the occurrence of adverse reactions during or after their last donation. Blood bank records were used to determine w

Phenotyping ciliary dynamics and coordination in response to CFTR-modulators in Cystic Fibrosis respiratory epithelial cells.

Personalized approaches for systematically assessing ciliary beat dynamics and for drug testing would improve the challenging task of diagnosing and treating respiratory disorders. In this pilot study, we show how multiscale differential dynamic microscopy (multi-DDM) can be used to characterize collective ciliary beating in a non-biased automated manner. We use multi-DDM to assess the efficacy of different CFTR-modulating drugs in human airway epithelial cells derived from subjects with cystic fibrosis (ΔF508/ΔF508 and ∆F508/-) based on ciliary beat frequency and coordination. Similar to clin

[Problems related to control of epidemic and persistent outbreaks of scabies].

Experience with control of epidemic and persistent outbreaks of scabies in collectives is presented. Both diagnosis and patient's compliance may pose problems. When diagnosing scabies, not only clinical symptoms but also the dynamics of the spread among persons in collective facilities such as social care and psychiatric in-patient centres should be taken into account and efficacy of the antiscabies medication should be followed up. If diagnosis of scabies is confirmed, it is crucial to prescribe an effective antiscabies medication and to ensure the patient's compliance with treatment, includi

Examining Who Benefits from Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Depression: Insights from a Series of Individual Participant Data Meta-analyses.

Because little was known about who benefits specifically from short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) for depression, we conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis project, collecting and combining raw datasets from 43 trials (N = 4,155) assessing its efficacy and examining participant baseline characteristics as moderators of outcome. Findings supported STPP's efficacy compared to control conditions and antidepressant medication, and when added to antidepressants. Episode duration and baseline severity moderated treatment outcome. Drawing on these findings and a decade of da

Faith, Climate-Related Distress, and Ecological Hope in the Philippines: A Conceptual Framework for Spiritual Meaning and Collective Agency.

Climate-related distress in the Philippines may involve realistic fear, ecological grief, disaster trauma, disrupted meaning, and spiritual struggle, yet spiritual responses are neither uniformly protective nor harmful. This theory-building conceptual article develops a spiritual climate resilience framework integrating the meaning-making model with hope theory. The framework explains how ecological threat or loss may contribute to differentiated distress and meaning discrepancy, which are interpreted through spiritual appraisal and related to motivational, behavioral, and communal responses.

Estimates of intragroup dependence for drug use and skill measures in school-based drug abuse prevention trials: an empirical study of three independent samples.

Group-randomized drug abuse prevention trials customarily designate schools as the unit of assignment to experimental condition; however, students within schools remain the unit of observation. Students nested within schools may show some resemblance based on common (peer) selection or school climate factors (i.e., disciplinary practices, group norms, or rules). Appropriate analyses of any treatment effects must be statistically correct for the magnitude of clustering within these intact social units (i.e., intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]). There is little reported evidence, however,

Targeting Aurora A kinase activity with the investigational agent alisertib increases the efficacy of cytarabine through a FOXO-dependent mechanism.

Novel therapies are urgently needed to improve clinical outcomes for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The investigational drug alisertib (MLN8237) is a novel Aurora A kinase inhibitor being studied in multiple Phase I and II studies. We investigated the preclinical efficacy and pharmacodynamics of alisertib in AML cell lines, primary AML cells and mouse models of AML. Here, we report that alisertib disrupted cell viability, diminished clonogenic survival, induced expression of the FOXO3a targets p27 and BIM and triggered apoptosis. A link between Aurora A expression and sensitivity

Unraveling the "black box" of school tobacco policy implementation: A mixed-methods study at Danish vocational schools informed by Normalization Process Theory.

BACKGROUND: Smoke-free policies are often poorly implemented in schools. The Smoke-Free Vocational Schools intervention aimed to support the routine implementation of a comprehensive school tobacco policy at Danish vocational schools and took place across seven schools. This study aimed to assess and understand the mechanisms-that is, reasoning and behavior change-that shaped if and how policy implementation outcomes occurred. METHOD: We applied a convergent mixed-methods design informed by Normalization Process Theory (NPT). The quantitative strand employed a repeated cross-sectional design,

Neighborhood informal social control and child maltreatment: A comparison of protective and punitive approaches.

This paper introduces a new measure of informal social control of child maltreatment (henceforth ISC_CM) by neighbors. Research literature typically uses collective efficacy (Sampson, Raudenbush, & Earls, 1997) to examine neighborhood informal social control. We argue that double standards about the application of informal social control to family versus street crime requires a measure of informal social control specific to child maltreatment. We also argue that how neighbors intervene may matter as much as whether they intervene. Neighbors may engage in ISC_CM aimed at protecting the child an

Microscopic Approach to Intrinsic Antibiotic Resistance.

The emergence of multidrug resistance in Gram-negative pathogens is critically determined by the interplay between efflux pumps activity and low permeation outer membrane. Although phenotypic heterogeneity in isogenic cells is recognized as a key factor of treatment failure, a mathematical framework able to integrate growth dynamics and single-cell heterogeneity in antimicrobial resistance, remains absent. Here we provide such framework that bridges single-cell and colony scales in the context of bacterial survival and efficacy against drugs. Using experimental inputs, our approach produces te

Recommendations of the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico in the face of artificial intelligence in the biomedical scenario.

Artificial intelligence as a generic concept is present in all activities of daily life in contemporary society. In the biomedical scenario has had a particular presence, with the development of systems ranging from the generation of knowledge in medical research to applications in different areas of individual and collective health. Such is the case of new tools based AI in different modalities, in public health, diagnostics, image, medical and surgical clinical processes, as well as rehabilitation, inclusion and functional facilitation strategies. Despite being a relevant advance based on te

PLX4032, a potent inhibitor of the B-Raf V600E oncogene, selectively inhibits V600E-positive melanomas.

Targeted intervention of the B-Raf V600E gene product that is prominent in melanoma has been met with modest success. Here, we characterize the pharmacological properties of PLX4032, a next-generation inhibitor with exquisite specificity against the V600E oncogene and striking anti-melanoma activity. PLX4032 induces potent cell cycle arrest, inhibits proliferation, and initiates apoptosis exclusively in V600E-positive cells in a variety of in vitro experimental systems; follow-up xenograft studies demonstrate extreme selectivity and efficacy against melanoma tumors bearing the V600E oncoproduc

The Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Study Group: a voluntary international registry.

The Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Registry (CDHR) was established to collect data on all infants treated at participating institutions with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) to assess therapy and improve outcome. Since 1995, the CDHR has accumulated data on over 4000 infants. The collective efforts of the CDH Study Group have provided valuable information regarding the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions and have tried to establish predictors of outcome. Because CDH is an uncommon, heterogeneous structural anomaly with a wide spectrum of severity, individual institutions may va
