BACKGROUND: Anopheles darlingi is the main malaria vector in the Amazon region and is among the most efficient malaria vectors worldwide. However, due to the lack of a well-established laboratory colony, key control-relevant aspects of the bionomics, behaviour, genetics, and vector-parasite relationships of An. darlingi remain unknown. Here, biological parameters that had been successful in initiating other Anopheles colonies were optimized and improved for An. darlingi, with the aim of establish a free-mating, stable, and highly productive laboratory colony.
METHODS: Wild An. darlingi adult

A new bridge between studies of sexual selection and the massive literature on Caenorhabditis elegans behaviourand nervous system properties promise to provide important new insights into both fields. This paper shows that mate choice likely occurs in hermaphrodite C. elegans on the basis of stimulation from the male genital spicules, making it possible to apply the toolkit of extensive background knowledge of C. elegans and powerful modern techniques to test in unprecedented detail the leading hypotheses regarding one of the most sweeping trends in all of animal evolution, the especially rapi

As the important external genitalia of males, penis has the functions of both urination and copulation. Battle wound, other trauma, and some diseases such as penile cancer can result in total and partial penile defect, which has great impact on the sufferers' mind and life. Therefore, the treatment of penile defect is receiving more and more importance from both the patients and doctors. The ideal treatment is expected to achieve a satisfactory appearance, unobstructed standing urination and successful copulation. Nowadays, the main clinical techniques for the treatment of penile defect includ

BACKGROUND: The male genital structures of arthropods are key features in the taxonomic and phylogenetic study of these organisms. The male genitalia of the head louse Pediculus humanus capitis are complex organs which are partly composed of structures that dynamically extrude during copulation.
METHODS: Here, we describe the morphology of the genitalia of P. humanus capitis at the copulation stage, and at rest, by using stereoscopic microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
RESULTS: CLSM and SEM images revealed that the vesica is composed

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of visceral Leishmaniasis in the Americas and is composed of a species complex. Males of this sand-fly produce acoustic signals during copulation and different patterns are observed among Brazilian populations. Such acoustic signals are commonly involved in species recognition. However, since the song is only produced during copulation it is not clear how it affects mating success or contributes to sexual isolation. Another aspect that may affect reproductive success is the presence of food. Since hematophagy is such an important aspect of L. longipalpi

Polyploidy and aneuploidy in hamster embryos are produced as manifestations of pregnancy wastage in surviving young when the interval between the estimated time of ovulation and copulation and hence fertilization is progressively increased. Significant delays resulted in triploidy in runted embryos, and the sporadic occurrence of mosaic aneuploidies.

Repeated experiences can cause behavior-specific fatigue. We use Drosophila to study this common form of motivational change, finding that prior matings make males more likely to abandon future copulations when challenged. Here we show that, during mating, dopamine signals through the D2-like receptor (D2R) to promote resilience to challenges that might otherwise cause the male to switch behaviors. This motivating dopamine signal suppresses the output of the copulation decision neurons (CDNs), which can truncate matings when pushed past threshold. Repetition-induced devaluation of mating resul

Nitric oxide (NO) may mediate penile erection by inhibiting smooth muscle of the corpora cavernosa, thereby allowing vasodilation of the corpora. In order to test the role of NO in the sexual function of intact male rats, either the precursor of NO (L-arginine, L-Arg) or an inhibitor of its synthesis (NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, NAME) was administered systemically before tests of copulation, ex copula genital reflexes, or sexual motivation/motor activity. NAME impaired copulation in a dose dependent manner. It also decreased the number of ex copula erections, but it increased the number

The Coolidge effect is a phenomenon in which males show renewed sexual interest in a novel female following copulation to satiety with another female. In golden hamsters, this phenomenon depends on the ability to recognize conspecifics using chemosensory cues processed through the main olfactory system. Here we tested whether olfactory targets in the hippocampal system support this natural form of recognition memory. Male hamsters received ibotenic acid lesions of the perirhinal-entorhinal cortex (PR-ENT) or hippocampus (H) and were allowed to copulate to satiety with a female conspecific, the

We evaluated the effects of bilateral radio-frequency lesions of the paragigantocellular (PGi) reticular nucleus in the ventral medulla on male rat copulatory behavior. In Experiment 1, sexually naive male rats with such lesions were more likely than sham-operated controls to copulate to ejaculation during their first exposure to an estrous female. Additionally, among the rats that copulated to ejaculation, those with lesions demonstrated a reduction in mount frequency (MF), intromission frequency (IF), and ejaculation latency (EL), and an increase in copulatory efficiency (CE). In Expt. 2, se

Little is known regarding the descending inhibitory control of genital reflexes such as ejaculation and vaginal contractions. The brainstem nucleus paragigantocellularis (nPGi) projects bilaterally to the lumbosacral motoneuron pools that innervate the genital musculature of both male and female rats. Electrolytic nPGi lesions facilitate ejaculation in males, leading to the hypothesis that the nPGi is the source of descending inhibition to genital reflexes. However, the function of the nPGi in female sexual behavior remains to be elucidated. To this end, male and female rats received bilateral

OBJECTIVE: To study the reproductive toxicity of metadoxine.
METHODS: Male and female rats were given metadoxine before pregnancy and early gestation, i.e. to feed metadoxine to male rats for 60 days before copulation and continue feeding during copulation, and feed metadoxine to female rats for 14 days before copulation.
RESULTS: No significant toxic effect was observed in the 400 mg/kg group. A few rats showed paralysis of hind leg in the 800 mg/kg group. The dosage of 1 600 mg/kg caused significant paralysis of hind legs, emaciation, and reduced weight gain. In the 1600 mg/kg group, the m

The phallic glans of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is the distal termination of the semen-conducting sulcus spermaticus and during copulation has the closest, most intimate mechanical interactions with the female urodeum, the middle cloacal chamber that contains the opening to the vaginal passages and oviducts. However, the details of this interface leading to insemination and gamete uptake are unclear. Here, we: (1) histologically characterize the underlying tissue types and morphologically quantify the shape changes associated with glans inflation into the copulatory co

Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes are the most important vectors of human malaria. The reproductive success of these mosquitoes relies on a single copulation event after which the majority of females become permanently refractory to further mating. This refractory behavior is at least partially mediated by the male-synthetized steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), which is packaged together with other seminal secretions into a gelatinous mating plug and transferred to the female atrium during mating. In this study, we show that two 20E-regulated chymotrypsin-like serine proteases specifically e

The completion by vertebrates of micturition, defecation, and copulation via the cloaca or its derivatives is hypothesized to be best explained by the existence of a thirteenth cranial nerve, the cloacal nerve, which, similar to the facial and trigeminal nerves, functions as a mixed cranial nerve containing both general and special components.

Collection of semen with a bovine artificial vagina (AV) was attempted with each of 14 camels over a period of 2 years. Semen samples were evaluated, extended and cryopreserved. Frozen thawed semen, diluted cooled semen or whole semen was used to inseminate some female camels which were induced to ovulate with hCG. Males ejaculated semen into the AV in 74.6% collection attempts. The male copulated for at least 200s in 62.9% attempts. The remaining copulations were of shorter duration. Similarly, 49.3% ejaculates were at least 3ml of semen. Libido and donation of semen improved from December on

Copulation can result in males inflicting wounds to the female genitalia, so-called traumatic mating. Such wounds are potentially costly as they could be entry points for infections, and they have been associated with a shorter lifespan in insect species. In many species of insects, females mate with more than one male, which leads to the question of whether the number of matings affects the amount of genital damage that females suffer from those matings. Here, we test whether copulation frequency affects the number or size of genital wounds in Drosophila melanogaster. Females that mated twice

Courtship behaviour in Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz and Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae) was examined to determine the sequence of behaviours that occur prior to copulation. Courtship consisted of a series of male and female touching and wing-flapping behaviours, with males performing a greater variety of wing-flapping behaviours than previously described. Occurrence of male approach-flapping, semi-circling and female stationary-flapping were all predictors of eventual copulation, and may coincide with the dispersal of pheromones or the production of auditory signals important to courtship. Touching
