The functions of the subclavius muscle (SM) are described as stabilization of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) and resisting elevation of the lateral end of the clavicle. During systematic cadaveric dissections, we observed additional fibrous structures, previously described as variants of the anatomy, extending from the SM and inserting into the coracoid process (CP). Due to the high incidence of these structures in our dissections, we hypothesized that the attachment at the CP is more common than appreciated and that, as a corollary, the function of the SM was (or has been) more complex than

INTRODUCTION: The coracobrachialis muscle (CRM) originates from the apex of the coracoid process, in common with the short head of the biceps brachii muscle, and from the intermuscular septum. It inserts to the medial part of the humerus between the attachment of the medial head of the triceps brachii and the brachial muscle. Both the proximal and distal attachments of the CRM, as well as its relationship with the musculocutaneus nerve, demonstrate morphological variability.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and one upper limbs (52 left, and 49 right) fixed in 10% formalin solution were exami

Coracoid fractures are relatively uncommon injuries and are typically treated conservatively or with open reduction and internal fixation of displaced fractures. In rare cases, coracoid fractures coincide with glenohumeral instability. Although glenohumeral instability is frequently treated with Bankart procedures, the Latarjet procedure (or transfer of the coracoid process) is used in patients with significant glenoid bone loss, recurrent instability, or prior failed Bankart procedures. However, in some cases, surgeons opt for the Latarjet procedure in patients who are at risk for recurrent i

Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injuries are a common cause of shoulder pain, especially among athletes. Surgical reconstruction of the AC joint can lead to complications such as fracture of the coracoid process, clavicle or acromion, which can negatively affect the patient's outcome. The purpose of this review is to discuss the risk factors for fractures associated with AC joint reconstruction, as well as the strategies that can be used to mitigate this risk. Risk factors for fractures include low mineral density, coracoid/clavicle drilling, larger holes in the coracoid, and the number of tunnel

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of coracoid tunnel size and location on the biomechanical characteristics of cortical button fixation for coracoclavicular ligament reconstruction.
METHODS: Thirteen matched pairs of cadaveric scapulae were used to determine the effects of coracoid tunnel size, and 6 matched pairs were used to determine the effects of coracoid tunnel location. For tunnel size, a 4.5-mm hole was drilled in the base of the coracoid of one scapula and a 6-mm hole was drilled in the contralateral scapula. For tunnel location, 2 holes were drilled: (1)

AIMS: One of the reason for Latarjet procedure failure may be coracoid graft osteolysis. In this study, we aimed to understand if a better compression between the coracoid process and the glenoid, using a mini-plate fixation during the Latarjet procedure, could reduce the amount of coracoid graft osteolysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computed tomography scan analysis of 26 prospectively followed-up patients was conducted after modified Latarjet procedure using mini-plate fixation technique to determine both the location and the amount of coracoid graft osteolysis in them. We then compared our

Posterior glenoplasty, as performed for the treatment of recurrent posterior shoulder instability, was shown to thrust the humeral head forward and was able to cause symptomatic impingement of the anterior cuff between the coracoid process and the humeral head. Such subcoracoid impingement is relieved by resection of the inferolateral part of the coracoid tip and of the coracoacromial ligament.

OBJECTIVE: Coracoid impingement has been recognized as an etiology for anterior shoulder pain; however, no imaging reference standard exists. We used sonography to compare the coracohumeral interval (CHI) in asymptomatic volunteers with the CHI in patients with coracoid impingement.
METHODS: Bilateral shoulder sonography was performed in 19 asymptomatic volunteers (10 men and 9 women) and in 8 shoulders in 7 patients (6 men and 1 woman) with a clinical diagnosis of coracoid impingement. With the arm adducted across the chest, the interval between the coracoid process and the lesser tuberosity

BACKGROUND: The success of the modified Latarjet procedure depends on proper sizing of the coracoid graft. There is no information available regarding the morphometric relationship between the glenoid cavity and the coracoid process for the South African population. This study aims at measuring the relationship between the glenoid and coracoid morphometries and investigates their gender-related differences.
METHODS: Glenohumeral computerized tomography scans of 100 consecutive patients were considered for this study. Morphometric measurements were performed after aligning the coracoid and gle

PURPOSE: Shoulder surgeries, vital for diverse pathologies, pose a risk of iatrogenic nerve damage. Existing literature lacks diverse bone landmark-specific nerve position data. The purpose of this study is to address this gap by investigating such relationships.
METHOD: This cadaveric study examines axillary, radial and suprascapular nerves' relation with acromion, coracoid and greater tuberosity of the humerus (GT). It also correlates this data with humeral lengths and explores nerve dynamics in relation to arm positions.
RESULTS: The mean distance from the axillary nerve to (i) GT was 4.3

CASE: A 15-year-old female rock climber presented with a traumatic coracoid process fracture of her dominant upper extremity that failed extensive nonoperative treatment. She was treated successfully by arthroscopic reduction and suture anchor fixation.
CONCLUSION: A novel surgical technique for coracoid fracture that combines arthroscopic reduction with suture anchor fixation can result in expeditious and durable clinical improvement in a young, high-demand athlete.

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteomas account for approximately 2- 3% of all primary bone neoplasm's sampled for biopsy. 50% of all of them occur in the long bones of the lower extremities, but osteoid osteoma of the coracoid process is rare. We have found only nine previously reported cases of coracoid osteoid osteoma in the international literature. We report a child with coracoid base osteoid osteoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A twelve-years-old boy with a persistent pain at the right shoulder since 9 months ago, were evaluated. His pain relatively responds to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs

BACKGROUND: Concurrent acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation and coracoid process fracture is a rare injury pattern, representing a double disruption of the superior shoulder suspensory complex (SSSC) and resulting in mechanical instability. Due to its rarity, there is no consensus on optimal management.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old male sustained a right shoulder injury during a snowboarding accident. Imaging revealed a right-sided AC joint dislocation with minimal superior displacement (coracoclavicular [CC] distance 13.6 mm on the right vs. 12 mm contralaterally) and a base-near cor

The different approaches used in arthroscopic stabilisation of the acromioclavicular joint are well known. However, and despite a great incidence of ectopic pectoralis minor insertion, an alternative choice for the use of arthroscopic portal has not being sufficiently described. Here, we describe a case of acute acromioclavicular dislocation grade III. The arthroscopic stabilisation was achieved using the TightRope (Arthrex, Naples, USA) implant. Through this technique, the approach to the articular portion of the coracoid process can be made intra-articularly or from the subacromial space. We

BACKGROUND: Coracoclavicular (CC) ligament reconstruction is a commonly performed procedure for high-grade acromioclavicular (AC) joint separations. Although distal clavicle and coracoid process fractures represent potential complications, they have been described in only case reports and small case series.
PURPOSE: To identify the incidence and characteristics of clavicle and coracoid fractures after CC ligament reconstruction.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: The US Military Health System Data Repository was queried for patients with a Current Procedural Terminolo

In the Boytchev technique the conjoined tendons of the coracobrachialis and short head of the biceps, together with the tendon of the pectoralis minor and the detached tip of the coracoid process are rerouted behind the subscapularis muscle, and reattached to the coracoid process with a screw. During a 10-year period 37 patients with recurrent anterior dislocation underwent a Boytchev procedure. Twenty-six patients (with 27 shoulders) were available to follow-up. The results of this retrospective study were disappointing, as the overall redislocation rate was 44%. The opinions of other authors

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic stabilization of torn coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments gained popularity recently. However, loss of reduction after the operation and complications unique to this technique involving tunnel placement through the distal clavicle and coracoid process are concerns. The purpose of this study was to report intraoperative and early postoperative complications associated with this procedure.
METHODS: This study retrospectively evaluated 18 consecutive patients who had undergone arthroscopic stabilization for torn CC ligaments between 2014 and 2015. The indications for surgery
